Today, Spring has officially ended here in Canada. I love Spring and I am sure I am going to miss it. I enjoyed it so much I can't help but take pictures of the greenery here. Canada can truly boast of its clean air and clean surroundings whether it's in the busy streets of downtown Toronto or in the suburbs. On my first morning this Spring, I was amazed to see grass. No kidding! I remember that the first time I saw Toronto, I got a harsh impression of its cold temperature. I haven't seen flowers nor grass along sidewalks. It was the harsh Winter season that time. Now I have gained a better impression of this cold city. It has transformed from a white city to a clean and green city. I like going to ... read more

Howdy, this is just a little test to get this blog up and running, today is Sunday June the 19th T-minus 3 days until departure. For those of you who don't know I'll be travelling to Los Angeles via choo-choo. I chose to ride by rail for a few reasons mainly because I wanted a genuine sense of travel on this trip rather than a quick 5 hour flight that leaves you lost and disoriented on arrival. I pick the train up in Buffalo, connect with Chicago and then after a short layover I board the Amtrak corridor known as the Texas Eagle Which cuts a path all the way through the American South down into Texas, making a stop in San Antonio before it hooks a left (thats a map left) and goes on up ... read more

The weather held up this afternoon as we took off on a little drive throughout Essex County, taking all the back county roads and looking at all the farmhouses along the way. The best part: Nick finally silenced Sarah's EXTREME skepticism by showing her that there is, indeed, a very large tomato information centre in the town of Leamington, which is also home to the Heinz tomato factory. Well it IS the tomato capital of Canada after all...Needless to say, the big tomato took Sarah's breath away and she absolutely HAD to get a picture in front of it (see pic). We're heading back to Vancouver Sunday evening to prepare for the big Okanagan bash for July 1st weekend, and of course to start our absolutely final preps for the trip coming up in July. (Nick ... read more

We left Vancouver via the airport bound for Toronto at 5:30am. The flight was at 7:00 but customs and security checks take time. Unfortunately we had to go the long way around again, so our flight path took us to Dallas and Chicargo before touching down in Toronto 12 hrs later. We caught the bus to our hotel and slept. Toronto is a very big city, so has it's problems with smog, traffic congestion and homeless people. We took a tour on a double decker bus over 2 days and saw plenty. We took a closer look at Casa Loma - a very opulent homestead built in 1910 by the then owner of the Hydro. As you might imagine he was very wealthy and the 96 room house is a testiment to that wealth. At the ... read more

As soon as we got in to Windsor, we made the quick jump from cool Vancouver weather (@14 degrees C) to (drum roll please) typical Windsor summer heat and humidity at about 30 degrees. After being outside for two minutes, Sarah was drenched with sweat and NEEDED to jump in the pool, where she stayed for one full day. We attended Nick's sister Julia's graduation (Bachelor of Commerce) at the University on Sunday and had a big family BBQ later that day - it was nice to see everyone! On Monday we decided to become tourists and visited Jackson Park to see the WWII Lancaster bomber that was grounded from its pedestal and being restored. We then hit the riverfront for a little walk in the afternoon. Hoping for a big storm Southern Ontario style! N&S ... read more

We had a 9.15am start this morning and made our way to Niagara Falls which is what most of us had been waiting for… The first thing that strikes you is that you can see the falls from the road on the way into town and we could see it from the bus!! I guess I had expected that it would be in a National Park somewhere and be somewhat like the Grand Canyon - out of the way of the town but it isn't. The second thing I noticed is that I thought the falls would be taller, but they are not beautiful because of their height, it's more about the width and the shear force of the water. Niagara Falls, I have to tell you, may just be one of the most spectacular things ... read more

Today we left the province of Quebec and continued along the St Lawrence River Valley to Toronto. We stopped along the way to take a boat cruise along through 1000 Island District. We saw the famous Boldt Castle which originally had a bowling alley, hotel and all sorts of other extravagant things in it!! We also saw the world’s shortest international bridge which looked about 4 metres long and it joins two islands, one which is on the US side and the other on the Canadian side. The houses throughout the Island are elaborate and the private islands range from having a backyard of stone to forest. Went to the Big Apple - which I have to tell you has nothing on the Big Banana. They have a tribute inside the restaurant to big fruit and ... read more
