As I am sure you probably already figured out we did not have internet yesterday so here is the blog that should have gone out last night. Day 5 We left Port Royal with a bit of overcast, but not cold. As we passed St. Mary's Bay it was socked in with fog which soon lifted, and it turned into a glorious day. Our drive today to Yarmouth was about 2 hours, and we arrived at our camp site, Campers Haven, around noon. After setting up, which has become so very smooth, and a quick lunch we hit the road with the "bug". Our mission today was to check out the area that Ray's grandparents, Frank German and Jane Amirault were from, Pubnico and East Pubnico. Also many generations of his family were from this area, ... read more

Cheticamp Upon departing Prince Edward Island, we again crossed the Confederation Bridge into Nova Scotia where we stopped for a few more photos. It is a beautiful piece of concrete. They will be paying off this bridge for a while….at over $50 Canadian per vehicle maybe it won’t take that long. So, we took our fair share of pictures and then some more. Perhaps better planning would have had us taking the ferry and perhaps shaving some time, but by the time we realized this, there were no reservations to be had on the ferry at a time of our choosing. Pushing on, it would be several hours until we reached our next destination, Cheticamp, a town at the base of the Cabot Trail in the Cape Breton National Park. Once we checked into our motel, ... read more

We headed out this morning in search of a few lighthouses on the southeast coast. It was a fairly long drive (about 235 miles round trip), so we had scheduled only a few. The first one required us to walk out the rocky shoreline to get a good photo. The skies were cloudy, the breeze off the ocean was cool and the fog rolled all over the harbor. This lighthouse sets on the edge of Pubnico Harbour which is a deep, landlocked inlet found between Cape Sable and Yarmouth with the town of Pubnico at its head. I found some Interesting information on the first keeper. Matruin Amero was appointed first keeper of the Pubnico Harbour Lighthouse in 1853. The Annual Report of the Department of Marine and Fisheries for 1874 noted that the dwelling house ... read more

The third and final lighthouse today was Sandy Point. On the way out to Sandy Point, we noticed a boatyard with several lobster boats. They are so colorful and made for some great pictures. We wanted to arrive at the lighthouse at low tide as the lighthouse sits on the east side entrance to Shelburne Harbor and, at low tide was to be accessible across a sand bar. Unfortunately, the tide was not low enough for us to walk all the way out to the tower, but we were still fairly close. This lighthouse was originally built on a pier and is a caisson lighthouse, meaning it is built on a concrete or metal watertight retaining structure (caisson). These types of lighthouses were developed in the late 19th century as more efficient because they could better ... read more

September 11, 2013 Joe let me sleep until 9 AM so we got a late start. My back is a little better, I can walk just fine so I'm happy for the stops for the sights. I'm grateful that Joe lugged our luggage today. Hmm...is that why we call it luggage, because we lug it? Never thought about that before. We had a very warm 76 degrees and sun for our touristy treats. We left Truro, Nova Scotia and drove along the Minas Basin of the Bay of Fundy. We are still marveling at the tides and tidal flats. I have decided the basin isn't good for much other than marveling at...there is little wildlife or flora to speak of and the tides preclude any kind of shipping industry. But it is surrounded by fertile soil ... read more

(Middle West) Pubnico, N.S. We made it! We arrived in (Middle West) Pubnico, Nova Scotia, the furthest destination on our cross Canada trip. We arrived quite late after a very long day of driving all the way from Montreal. After about 8 hours of driving from Montreal we got into Moncton, N.B., and stopped in at the local Pita Pit for a snack. We plugged in the address for Pubnico on the GPS and it said 6 more hours. In Alana and Dale time this was nothing as we were pro’s now, so we decided to eat and run. At about 9:00pm (Atlantic time) we called Dale’s uncle Walter who said we were about 1.5 hours away. He let us know that the “guest house” was unlocked and that we could let ourselves in and we ... read more

Yarmouth NS (Better knowen as Fogmouth!!) We departed Shelburne at midnight on September 17th to sail around the cape and up to Yarmouth. We sailed through the “Schooner Passage”, a shortcut which saves about 10-12 nautical miles but must say that it is NOT easy. We purposely timed our passage for a flood tide, as there is a little over 3 knots of current that bubbles around you and spins you through some rip tide. This is not the place to play around as there are many shoals and bends to wiggle through. Wouldn’t want to either loose the engine or rudder in this section. Pffew! Made it to Yarmouth safe and sound, and in Heavy Fog, thanks to the aid and confidence building provided by our new friends Brian and Sheila. We docked at the ... read more

June 22, 2009 - Monday Today’s adventure was taking a ride across the Atlantic Ocean on the Cat Ferry from Bar Harbor to Yarmouth NS. Wow, nice little ship! We watched a movie going over and a movie going back. We arrived in Yarmouth Nova Scotia around 11:00 our time (12:00 NS time) and boarded a little tour bus. Our tour bus guide was a cute little 60 year old lady who gave us a great tour. She took us to the Cape Forchu Lighthouse where we had a nice lunch in the tea room. We both had the lobster sandwiches (my 3rd one in 3 days!). This time it was lobster salad on a sandwich. The bread was homemade and was really thick. It was very good. We also split a bread pudding with caramel ... read more

Hello Everyone, and so the Blog begins again! I arrived in heavy fog after being rerouted from DC to Toronto in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Thursday evening of last week to start the next chapter of the "gap year" ala Steffi. After picking my parents up from the airport on early Friday morning (they were traveling the Canadian West for the last 2 weeks) we headed South towards "our" lake about 30 km from Yarmouth . Once here, time stands still, and we totally immerse ourselves in the tranquility of the Lake, the birds singing, the Loons howling, the Hummingbirds humming, etc... you get the picture. The only disruption to the stillness of the first days are the noise of the lawnmover and the weed eater who turn with undying energy to make the grass (or ... read more
