Heavy Fog in the port of Yarmouth
Heavy Fog in the port of Yarmouth Yarmouth NS (Better knowen as Fogmouth!!)
We departed Shelburne at midnight on September 17th to sail around the cape and up to Yarmouth. We sailed through the “Schooner Passage”, a shortcut which saves about 10-12 nautical miles but must say that it is NOT easy. We purposely timed our passage for a flood tide, as there is a little over 3 knots of current that bubbles around you and spins you through some rip tide. This is not the place to play around as there are many shoals and bends to wiggle through. Wouldn’t want to either loose the engine or rudder in this section.
Pffew! Made it to Yarmouth safe and sound, and in Heavy Fog, thanks to the aid and confidence building provided by our new friends Brian and Sheila. We docked at the only available wharf in town, the Killiams Bros. Marina, formerly the city marina. We docked up, went to town to stock up on fuel (thanks to Paul Pothier, marina manager, for giving us a ride) and to buy a nice comfy pet carrier for ShellSea, so she can hang out with us in the wheelhouse while navigating. No sooner did we get back, but
Cat Ferry, Yarmouth
Cat Ferry, Yarmouth who do we see walking down the dock... Brian and Sheila!! How nice is that?!?! They came to check that we got in ok... What nice folks (we really like them..) We all went out for diner that evening (thanks again guys... that was yummy!) and came back to the boat to look at....you guessed it...more marine charts!!! We picked their brains for several more hours and reluctantly said farewell to them later that evening. We hope they will join us in the BVI’s, when they come to visit their “new sailboat”...hint, hint...
