(Middle West) Pubnico, N.S.
We made it! We arrived in (Middle West) Pubnico, Nova Scotia, the furthest destination on our cross Canada trip. We arrived quite late after a very long day of driving all the way from Montreal. After about 8 hours of driving from Montreal we got into Moncton, N.B., and stopped in at the local Pita Pit for a snack. We plugged in the address for Pubnico on the GPS and it said 6 more hours. In Alana and Dale time this was nothing as we were pro’s now, so we decided to eat and run. At about 9:00pm (Atlantic time) we called Dale’s uncle Walter who said we were about 1.5 hours away. He let us know that the “guest house” was unlocked and that we could let ourselves in and we would meet in the morning for breakfast. The remaining drive was not the most pleasant as it was dark, windy, and of course I was scared of the animals lurking in the bushes (we saw three or four more deer). But we made it safe and sound at about 11:00pm Atlantic time.
The guest house was incredible to say the least. The house
sat about 5 feet from the ocean and was wall to wall windows. We were so excited to be there. We went straight to bed and decided to keep all the window blinds open so that we could wake up to the amazing view with the sun rising over the water right outside our windows.
At about 5:00am I was not as excited to see the sun as I thought I would be and closed the blinds to get a little more shut eye lol.
That morning we went to the Dennis Point Diner with Dale’s Aunt Marla and Uncle Walter. On my quest to have as much lobster as possible in N.S., I started the day off right with a cold lobster sandwich. WOW. Dale opted for one of his favorites, burger and fries.
After lunch we all went to the Acadian festival which was held at the Acadia historical Village. It seemed like everyone from Pubnico was there supporting the event which consisted of an auction, a farm animal petting zoo, strong man competition (which Dale would have won if he tried), wood carving, horseshoes, and the game of cow pie bingo (among other things).
For those who come from a city and are not familiar with cow pie bingo (such as myself), the game is as follows: each person picks and pays for a square on a grid which corresponds to a square in the pasture. If the cow poops on your square then you win! But we didn’t. I guess I can say it was fun watching the cow poop? From here we went back to the house where I had a glass of wine on the patio and read Total Recall while Dale had a well-deserved nap. Afterwards Dale and I went for dinner at the Red Cap Inn where I had more lobster and dale had another burger (Dale doesn’t eat seafood).
The next day Uncle Walter took Dale and I to Cape Forchu and the last manually operated lighthouse in Nova Scotia and it was incredible. The fog was thick and the sound of the ocean against the rocks was both terrifying and mesmerizing. The experience is hard to put into words as you just felt so small and disposable when observing the power of the ocean. We toured the old lighthouse and sat in the famous
“yellow chair” which sits in front of a live webcam at novascotiawebcams.com (if you look at the site click on the Yarmouth and Acadian Shores tab and then Cape Forchu…you’ll see the chair).
That evening we had dinner in and then had Marla and Walter’s neighbour’s Carl, his wife Sandy, and Sandy’s mother Mary-Rose over for dessert. Carl, Sandy, and Mary-Rose have all lived in the area their whole lives and have a thick Acadian accident which was an absolute treat to listen to. I am still unsure what exactly we were talking about but we all had a good chuckle.
On our last day in Pubnico Marla and Walter took Dale and I too Cape Sable Island which is the southernmost point of Nova Scotia. Although it was a windy and foggy day, the beach was gorgeous. It was neat to think that there was nothing but ocean separating us from Europe. Despite the bitter cold, brave Dale dipped his wee toes in the Atlantic and can now boast that he has experienced both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans!
That night Marla and Walter cooked a true feast which included a giant lobster (just for me!)
steak (for everyone else) two types of salad and baked potatoes. You can truly taste the difference when eating lobster that came out of the ocean just minutes before being cooked…Mmm thank you Marla and Walter it was yummy!
It was so nice getting to know Marla and Walter better and experiencing Pubnico and its way of life. It was such a neat town with so much history. We can’t wait to go back.
