Halifax was a pretty little city. We did not spend much time in it since we headed to Peggy's Cove. This is a close second to where I would like to spend next summer. Homer, Alaska being the first place. Peggy's Cove was a quaint little town. I stood on top of the rocks by the little house and felt totally at peace. The waves hitting the rocks had something probably to do with that. It was windy and cold, but you could not help but fall in love with this place. If you get a chance, look up it's history and why it's names Peggy's Cove. I hope you enjoy all of my pictures. This was our last day cruising, so it's back to NYC after this...... read more

What a busy time in Halifax. During our first day in Halifax we poked around the town and booked a hotel room at the Atlantica through hotwire. We visited the local Community Living in Halifax which is located in a elementary school. The next day we went to Peggy's cove which is also the most photographed place in Canada. It was a beautiful day with a fairly strong wind which made for good waves (As you will see in the pictures). That evening we strolled along the wharf and saw Theodore the tugboat and visited the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic for free. As we walked passed the museum Tabi went to check the hours and saw that it was free Tuesdays 5:30p.m. to 8p.m. With our luck it was Tuesday and 5 p.m (they even ... read more

Once we hit Channel-port Aux Basque we discovered that there was no Wal-mart in this town. We had no choice and were going to have to breakdown and rent a hotel, unfortunately every hotel in the town was booked up :'(. In the end we resorted to sleeping in our seats in a Tim Horton's parking lot, needless to say it wasn't a great sleep. The next day we boarded the ferry and to our luck we got a free hot meal. There was problems with one of the ferry's a couple days ago and the passengers had to be delayed so they scored a free lunch and decided just to give it to everyone; it was nice to have some real hot food rather than the protein bars/shakes we've been living off of. There were ... read more

Geo: 44.6462, -63.5739Day 2 Lunenburg and Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia We had a magnificent day for traveling. Sunny and high in the 60's (Fahrenheit). Driver Gary headed south through Halifax, past lovely two-story homes on beautiful tree-lined streets. We passed an area known as "The Oval" which serves as a running track in summer and a skating rink in winter. Very clever. As we traveled, Allison gave us some history of Nova Scotia. The Mi'kmaq are the founding people of Nova Scotia. The French, who arrived in 1605, referred to the area as Acadia. The Acadians lived here for almost 80 years, prior to the British Siege of Port Royal in 1710. The British carried out the Great Expulsion of 1755, deporting 11,500 Acadians from the maritime region. Many migrated to Spanish colonial Louisiana and became known ... read more

Geo: 44.6462, -63.5739Nova Scotia – Prince Edward Island – Cape Bretton – New BrunswickBy Tommye Fleming (Spoonball on TravelPod)Today is arrival day for our Canadian Maritimes tour with Tauck. We actually arrived in Canada two days ago, at the tail-end of our driving trip along the coast of Maine. See my blog for that trip, "The Maine Thing", at http://www.travelpod.com/dashboard/entry/9/1442274021. We arrived a day early as part of Tauck's "Gift of Time" ... a bonus day before or after the trip, for loyal Tauck travelers. We checked into the Prince George Hotel last evening, after a long drive in from Saint John, New Brunswick. We dined across the street at The Keg, which came highly recommended on the Tauck Travel Forum. Thumbs up to those who suggested it; we like it too! This morning we returned ... read more

Geo: 44.6462, -63.5739Day 9 – Saint John, New Brunswick to Halifax, Nova ScotiaToday was not our best travel day. Several folks had suggested we check out Reversing Falls before we left Saint John. Reversing Falls are rapids where the Saint John River runs through a narrow gorge before emptying into the Bay of Fundy. The tides of the bay force the water to reverse against the prevailing current when the tide is high. Sounds interesting; sorry to have missed it. We found the reviewing platform but saw only a few swirls in the waters below. Perhaps we were viewing at the wrong time.We hit the road (NB-1) to Halifax. We exited at Sussex, home to 16 covered bridges. Checked out two and were on the road again. I like covered bridges. They remind me of that ... read more

We woke up in Halifax this morning to find that before she left, Chantelle, our Couchsurfing host, had left us some of her mom's homemade Lassies (soft molasses cookies) on the table. Thanks, Chantelle! We drove about 40 minutes to Peggy's Cove, a rustic, undeveloped fishing village with a famous lighthouse which marks its location. Once a working post office, Peggy's Point remains one of the most photographed lighthouses in Canada. Some of the villagers there still fish for lobster and their colourful boats sit prettily in the small inlet, casting multi-hued reflections. Lobster traps sit in piles on the docks and wooden saltbox houses are dotted throughout the village. There are small, locally owned gift shops, galleries, restaurants and tea houses. A popular legend claims that the village's name came from the young sole survivor ... read more

We woke up this morning in Halifax and had breakfast with Ray, Chantelle and Amelia. They were busily getting ready for a camping trip that night and when we left, they gave us the key to the house and told us to make ourselves comfortable, help ourselves to whatever food was in the house and lock up and leave the key on the table when we left. We were sad to see them go and as always, were amazed at the trust that people place in us with their home. We were so close to everything that we left the car at home and walked 15 minutes to the Citadel. Sitting atop Citadel Hill, this fort was built in 1749 and was one of the four principal naval stations of the British Empire during the 18th ... read more
