We amazed ourselves at how much we packed into one day! Matthew, our motel/B&B host and chef in Yarmouth, did indeed fix us a "special" breakfast as promised. When we walked into the lobby he escorted us to a beautifully prepared table for two. There were eleven different kinds of fruit on our plate. Matthew is very proud of his culinary presentation skills and even though it was just scrambled eggs, ham and a boiled then pan fried potato, after he expounded on the "purity of his ingredients" I was intimidated enough to not ask for hot sauce. But it was a great way to start the day, loved Matthew's choice of guitar music, too. We followed the Lighthouse Trail (Highway 3) all the way to Cape Sable Island and the southernmost point in Nova Scotia ... read more

When we saw that Hurricane Gabriel would appear in Nova Scotia as heavy rain today, we decided that this would be the day to do make some ferry reservations for Newfoundland, do laundry, buy a new suitcase for me, and walk the streets of Halifax and we accomplished all four. We love Costco in Prescott and we loved it here, too. Such fun to look at products not offered at our store and compare the prices which are much higher here. We are staying in Dartmouth which is across the Bedford Basin of the Atlantic from Halifax. When we got here we took a toll bridge across, but today we took the ferry to Halifax's waterfront and downtown. It was a foggy ferry trip and the harbor area food stands were locked up and buskers were ... read more

Wet day indeed. When we woke up the rain was pouring off the roof and onto the canopy outside of the entrance of the hotel. The chance of breakfast on the patio beside the lake was out of the question. It was a warm day though around 20 degrees with warm rain. We decided to make a late start and after some shopping in a local Walmart we ventured to PIER 21. This is part of the Cunard Ferry terminal buildings. It is where the immigrants landed first in Canad. The museum was set up with information boards and pictures of the new immigrants landing with their possessions. The terminal was the gateway to Canada for many Europeans who suffered during the second world war, or suffered religious persecution. The stories of the evacuees from UK ... read more

Ok last day in Halifax and I spent a hour or so looking for a breakfast spot. Some cafés in Halifax don't open on Sunday and a few others don't open until 9AM. I finally found one that was also a convenience store. It was decent and the coffee was better than I expected. I got back to the hostel and took a shower and packed up. The hostel allows people to store their luggage on the day they are leaving so I didn't have to drag mine around the city. First stop of the day was a free walking tour. I can afford the paid tours but I prefer the free ones because it is more interactive with your guide and the guides usually have more interesting stories. The tour started at the Citadel which ... read more

Woke up at 4AM for my flight to Halifax. My Air Canada flight left at 6:30AM and it was the 2nd earliest flight I have ever taken behind a 5AM Berlin flight. Since it was so early I didn't want to ask someone to drive me so I would be using Park N Fly near the airport. Drove to the Park N Fly location but I should have checked closer because I pulled into the Valet parking lot. It was too late to leave so I just went with in and it wasn't that expensive. I didn't have any checked baggage and had done online check in the night before so I just went straight to security and my gate. Flight was uneventful and was just 2 hours. I did enjoy using the inflight entertainment system ... read more

When we arried to Halifax from Reykjavik, our first impression was that it was warm. It was also dark, something of a novelty after Icelands midnight sun. The traveling itself had gone well, it is a 4.5h flight from Reykjavik to Halifax, and half an hour in the bus from the airport to the city. We checked in at our hostel, and went to a nearby pub to grab some late night dinner which we ate outside on the patio, it was still roughly 25 degrees celcius even though the sun had disappeared two hour earlier. This starts to feel like vacation! The next day we set out early to explore the city. We started by going to a farmers market to buy some breakfast. As we didn't have cash, and the ATM at the place ... read more

"As sure as night is dark and day is light I keep you on my mind both day and night And happiness I've known proves that it's right Because you're mine, I walk the line" With the gravelly voice of Johnny Cash in the background, we departed Amherst for Halifax and the Titanic exhibits and graveyards (I know, this is sounding like a cemetery crawl). We started our Halifax adventure with a visit to picturesque Peggys Cove. The tale of the RMS Titanic of the White Star Line is well known to most. On April 10, 1912 she departed Southampton. The Titanic was the largest ship afloat, and thought to be virtually unsinkable. At 11:40 P. M. on April 14, the liner hit an iceberg and a huge gash was opened along the starboard side, with water ... read more

Geo: 44.6462, -63.5739Home at last....for the second time since we returned from South Africa on May 10. Let me back up a bit. Our last 24 hours in Cape Town comprised of:a delicious meal of tapas and wine at 'Fork' a disturbing and well acted play about the complexities of life in South Africa post-apartheida scary 45-minute walk home from the play to our lodge - nothing happened but it did feel like we were tempting fate on our last evening in a city where everyone said to always take a cab after darka slow morning with Jim, a bit of shopping, a pedicure and haircut for me then out to the airport for our much anticipated flight home!We endured a very long trip from Cape Town to Halifax (through Dubai) - 35 hours of travel ... read more

As mentioned last week, we took the CAT Ferry from Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and then drove around the south point of Nova Scotia and up the other side, to Halifax. It looked EXACTLY like I thought it should. When I was little, I had a book about some little kids who explored the rocks and caves in Maine, and something happened with a gigantic crab or lobster… I forget exactly what… and since I can’t remember enough about it, I can’t find it… but for my age group, it was a “thriller”… ANYway – all of the pictures and these big, giant boulders, and that’s exactly what Nova Scotia looked like. Like we were miniature in the land of giant..boulders. AND, it was misty and overcast often, which is exactly what it should be…in ... read more
