While I was enjoying my last leisurely month in Australia, I was making plans, via email, with some friends in Canada for a road trip. It was exciting to think of some of my best life friends, a car, the colours of autumn, and a place called Cape Breton. Cape Breton is a place that I've heard about it's beauty but have never been. So my good friends Steph and Nick ( famous from my Roadtrips and Reunions blog)had some time off work, and I have more then plenty of time. So Saturday I found myself on the highway cruising southbound, destination Halifax. That night we had a few drinks and talked about our upcoming road trip that was to start in the morning. The weather has been unusually warm this time of year. In fact ... read more

Last Day of Vacation.... We woke up and decided to try a different Puffin Tour boat. We drove to Big Bras d'Or hoping Bird Island Tour Boats would have two available seats. Success! :) The boat set off at approximately 10:15 a.m. The boat was operated by Captain Van Schaick and his son. They both enthusiastically shared information about all the birds and seals we would see at the Bird Islands. We saw Atlantic Puffins, Bald Eagles, many Great and Double Crested Cormorants, Blue Herons, and Grey Seals. On the return trip we even saw Northern Gannets diving for fish, rare for this far south. We then headed to the Fortress of Louisbourg. This is a 1744 historic reconstruction of a French fort, the largest in North America. People were dressed in period clothing and demonstrated ... read more

Woke up and had the best "full" breakfast. The french waitress was very nice and set us up with bags of ice for our cooler. With this and some cold cuts from the "Co-op" we set off in search of moose in Cape Breton National Park. We stopped at numerous lookoffs and saw some amazing ocean views. We stopped and walked around a bog where we saw "pitcher plants" and orchids beside the bogs. We detoured two times down dirt roads to see waterfalls. At the second waterfall, we watched and waited for a local girl to take the steep jump high off the rocks into the water. She chickened out in the end but soon after town boys arrived and they had fun climbing and jumping into the pool of water at the base of ... read more

Hi all. We drove all day today from one end of Nova Scotia to the other. These strange and friendly people were nice enough to wave hello to us as we drove by and Margaret was all "What is up with that?" I just explained that outside of NYC most people are friendly.... LOL We stopped on the way at the oldest winery in Nova Scotia but alas they were not open yet and no booze for us at 9AM :( We moved onwards to Truro where we caught the Tidal Bore in the nick of time. Thankfully, that did not take too long because I would have lost it with my A.D.H.D. We stopped at the Bulk Barn where they had lots of goodies. I found corn nuts, candy-coated sunflower seeds, Cajun trail mix...yum! We ... read more

We stayed at a great resort, it's too bad they don't give us time to use all the amenities. The Cabot trail is rugged and wild. The Reconstructed Fortress of Louisburg with actors playing roles is amazing in it's reality. We had a whale watching trip on really rough water. Five people puking on a small boat is not pretty. Saw some Northern pilot whales up close and personal.... read more

Badeck is located just off Highway 106 about halfway between Port Hastings and Sydney. The main reason for going to Badeck is to tour the Alexander Graham Bell Museum. This museum chronicles the life and times of this great man and there is a lot to see. Many remember him as the inventor of the telephone, however he should be remembered for much more than that. He was a teacher of the deaf and devised a type of code whereby he could communicate with his students. He fell in love with and married one of his students and this marriage lasted for many years until their deaths at advanced ages. Since he owned a home in Cape Breton, he experimented with hydrofoils in the area and even built one which successfully worked. He also experimented with ... read more

Hi everyone! Clarenville celebration went pretty well for our first. We did get screeched in there. Lot's of laughs. Tried cod tongues. eeww! Went to Cornerbrook after that. Stayed in a beautiful old Tudor style inn. The people in Cornerbrook were unbelieveable. The whole town dressed in red and walked four abreast for about 2 miles to the celebration site. It gives you goosebumps. The show is amazing. Our set up still needs some fine tuning. Drove to the ferry in Port Aux Basque after the show. A very long hard drive. Gail like winds. Torrential rains and in the dark with lots of moose. Thank God we didn't see any. It was late by the time the ferry debarked. Around midnight. Got to meet up with friends that we hadn't seen since St. John's. The ... read more

... read more
