July 26 - August 20, 2006 Saranac Lake, N.Y. - Louisbourg, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia 16,409 miles to date 2,853 miles this leg Today, August 20, we crested the eastern-most point of our round-the-continent road trip: Louisbourg on the magical tip of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia—what we consider a little piece of Ireland that has washed up on North American shores. The official longitude: 59 degrees, 58 minutes west of Greenwich. That’s 62 degrees of longitude (or more than one-sixth the circumference of the globe at that latitude!) traveled from Port Townsend, which lies at 122 degrees, 45 minutes west. We’ve turned the corner. From now on, every mile traveled is a westward one. We can hardly believe it. Cape Bretons justifiably consider their homeland to be the center of the universe, so when locals ... read more

This is the 12th part of a series about my trip on my 2005 883 Low Harley Sportster ‘Effie’ from Kansas City to Novia Scotia and back. This was part of my vacation from 4 to 20 AUG 2006 Tue 15 Aug 06 Finished the Cabot Trail. I can’t put it in words. The pictures say it all. Man that takes a long time to go around. I think I was on the trail for 8 hours, the road was in good condition. Its just awesome. I had the best seafood chowder ever at a local café, followed by a platter of scallops and chips. Even the McDonalds here offers the ‘McLobster’. Around every corner I kept expecting to see Moby Dicks ‘Try Pots' inn. People were spotting whales from the cliffs. In the afternoon the ... read more

Odometer: 36741km The Cabot Trail displayed everything promised. Vista after vista caused me to quietly exclaim inside my helmet. Seemingly organized rocky shores interspersed with narrow, sandy beaches met my expectations of what this coastline would be like. Inland there were lush trees giving way to scrub spuce and other hearty bushes reaching down to the shore. The road was a bit of an engineering wonder. Sometimes cutting through rocky outcroppings, sometimes twisting and climbing on the edge of a steep hill, and sometimes winding haphazardly along the coastline, it always offerred motorcycle riding fun. The tough part was handling the rough road. Although there were some new parts that had been recently paved, many of the older, twisty stretches had surpise potholes and bumps, all of which forced me to ride without taking the liberty ... read more

Odometer: 36360km This was an ordinary driving day. The country from Halifax to the Canso Causeway was mostly forested with some open farming near Antigonish. I liked the feel of Antigonish and thought the St. Francis Xavier University campus was wonderful. I am planning on driving along the coast on the old road around here on my way back and I'll have a closer look then. Once I reached Cape Breton the countryside changed. It was very enjoyable, with lots of views over a broken forest and lakes. Driving along Bras d'Or Lake was especially nice. There are lots of motorcycles here and most of them have Quebec license plates. I remember Sylvain telling me that all the big manufacturing and construction companies in Quebec shutdown for the same three week period so that must be ... read more

July19, 20, 2006. It was to be a 14 hour ferry ride that turned into 18 hours, one long day. We are back to N. Sydney, Nova Scotia. The mail, in the Maritimes and Atlantic Canada, has not been great, last year in Alberta and British Columbia it was more efficient. Oh well, we don’t need anything and it all can wait. July 21, 2006. N. Sydney to Louisbourg, Nova Scotia. The fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site of Canada, was once a busy fortified seaport. From its founding by the French in1713 to its abandonment by the British in 1768, Louisbourg was a place of significance in the Franco-British struggle fore empire. The history goes like this, the French founded Louisbourg, (no mention of the natives that lived here forever),in 1713 and established a ... read more

We have another ferry crossing today from North Sydney to Port aux Basques, Newfoundland. Our ferry was to leave at 12:30 PM and we need to be in line at least one hour ahead of time. Well we arrived early and waited, this is the first time the ferry has be late for us, but I am sure what with weather conditions it must happen from time to time. This will be a six hour trip and we lose ½ an hour when we get to Newfoundland. We are in the middle of the far north of the Atlantic Ocean and I am typing and receiving wireless internet connection. By the magic of technology we are able to send pictures and text. Is that amazing or what? ... read more

Ingonish Beach is our first stop, not a long beach but lots of pretty pink round stones. We decided to have brunch at the Keltic Lodge, and it was grand. As we drove around the Cabot Trail, we are now on the Atlantic side of Cape Breton and the views are incredibly beautiful. The Gaelic/Keltic School, in St. Ann’s, was our next stop. During the summer months, kids come and learn Gaelic, step dancing, bag pipes and more of the history and tradition of the Scottish folks. It is quite an elaborate place. Sydney Information Center, helped us figure out the ferry schedule and gave us the name of a campground, with directions for the grocery store, etc. A huge fiddle, the symbol of the Scotts love of music and dance, is on display in ... read more

Hike. Kayak. Whales. Busy day of doing stuff I'm cold and hungry! We started off the morning with a short hike to the rocky cliffs somewhere in Cape Breton...can't remember the name! It was only about 45 minutes for the round trip hike. More like a pleasant walk amongst the trees and then the reward was some gorgeous views. Then it was another short drive of about 20 minutes or so to the place where we could rent kayaks. Only $20 for two hours of kayaking! I love kayaking on nice and calm waters. Amazingly I didn't get too wet either. After kayaking we had a short walk along a rocky beach and tested out our rock skipping skills. Yup, I still can't skip a rock worth a darn! haha Before we knew it, we sped ... read more
