Well all, day 1 of 273 has begun! Hank was on the events team and I was a Medal Bearer shuttle driver. Jake was our host. Rick Hansen started off the relay at Cape Spear. He made 2 more appearances on Day 1. We started on what is called a Spider. We did a small side segmant of the relay on Signal Hill. Jake our host got to be the first Medal Bearer. He was followed by 3 more to take it down the hill. Jake and I carried on back to our hotel where we had our next meeting point for our next bunch of Medal Bearers. All went well. Jake can talk the talk! Alot of fun was had doing our Firework Dance! We attended the End of Day Ceremony where Rick wowed he ... read more

Well...George Street is crazy! Lot's of loud live eastcoast music. Bars are all packed! We went for dinner at Jungle Jims. Fun, crazy place. One of the menu items was a sampler called "Everything including the Kitchen Sink". Also, our friend Dawn ordered a coctail which was 46 oz's! Food was good, but service was very slow. Probably because they were so busy. After dinner we walked around and ended up in a bar called Kelly's. The band had just gone on break and were to be back in 45 minutes. An hour later after having our own fun, we realized the bar was almost empty. Apparently the band left and decided not to return! We called our cab at that point and called it a night. The next morning Dawn and I went on a ... read more

As I sit here impatiently awaiting my evening flight time to arrive, my belly is flippin around like the surf out at Middle Cove. In just a few short hours, Bridge and I embark on the first leg of our 9 day tour of the UK. After a 10:00pm NDT departure, planes, trains and automobiles later we arrive in Edinburgh at 4:30pm BST tomorrow. It's not too bad really, 15 hours of travelling... This is by far the longest leg of the trip as far as hours moving goes and it's good that it's at the beginning of the trip whilst our emotions and energy are so high. I'm gonna keep telling myself that if I get tired :) Just get me to the Virgin Lounge.... I think in an earlier post I had mentioned the ... read more

Wednesday August 3rd, 2011 St. John’s, Newfoundland The historic port of St. John’s, billed as one of the oldest cities in the New World, was a bit of a disappointment. A serious lack of truly historic old buildings along with the absence of a really cute old city center was a letdown. The people were very friendly and the city was clean and safe, so it must all be put in proper prospective. The very narrow opening into the harbor was a dramatic entrance, but I guess the foggy, cloudy conditions did not help the cause of St. John’s either. Today was the famous Regatta Day on the nearby Quidi Vidi Lake and the whole town was there for the festivities. Rowing races were taking place all day on the Lake and the entire shoreline was ... read more

A lot has happened since our last entry! After we took a rest in the afternoon, we headed back down the hill to catch the George St. Festival activities for the evening. The major band playing was the Road Hammers, a Canadian Country band that Therese was familiar with. We walked down the BIG HILL from our hotel, and strolled around the city for a while. We took some nice pictures on the harbour front and elsewhere. Then we headed to the festival, had dinner and enjoyed the music. The band was good, and there were plenty of people, but it was not jam packed. When the band was done at 11, we tried to get in on a "Screeching In" for all the mainlanders, but it was too crowded, and we missed our chance. Then ... read more

We guess it's no surprise at this point, but we made it safe and sound, and did it in exactly 4 weeks on the road, arriving before the end of July. We're giving ourselves a little pat on the back now. Before going to bed last night, Eric found a hotel which still had rooms available in St. John's. Though it was a little out of our usual price-range, we really wanted a real room and a bed, so we went ahead and booked the room (well we booked it this morning once Therese was awake and we could make the decision together). Knowing we had a place to go at the end of the day was a big weight off our shoulders. At 8:00 am, the nice lady who ran the bed and breakfast made ... read more

Got to sleep in a bit and left hotel around 10:30 and headed to St. John's. The scenery along the way was fantastic! Lots of water and mountains, but still no moose sightings (much to our dismay). Arrived in St. John's around 2 and checked into the nicest room yet. Our room is right on the harbor and looks like a cabin from the inside. Went and had a bite to eat at the Yellow Belly Brewery and had seafood chowder and a Yellow Belly Red Ale. Then went next door to the Celtic Hearth and had another (Janet wanted a Guiness). Then walked around town looking at the sites and we stumbled upon the St. John The Baptist Basilica and started snapping photos. We then realized it was 5:10 and there was a 5PM mass ... read more

"Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing "Onward" the sailors cry Carry the lad thats born to be king Over the sea to Skye" Ahhhh Skye. We have one full day to tour it and it's been incredible researching the area. Having said that, we have to be realistic and so some things just have to be sacrificed. So to all the MacLeod's out there, my apologies, no Dunvegan on this trip. We will see the pictish brochs, however, at Glenelg the day we arrive at Kyle of Lochalsh. The following day, our plan is to take the Skye Bridge (no ferry - funny how my left eye stopped fluttering just typing that), follow the A87/A855 to do the loop which includes Portree, Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock, Faerie Glen and Talisker Distillery. ... read more

In 29 days, my travelling buddy, Bridge and I will embark on the trip of our dreams. We both have very different levels of travel experience (me not a lot, her oodles), but for this trip nothing that has come before can compare to our anticipation of getting on that plane next month. Scotland. Just the thought of it conjurs up fantastical images of painted warriors in cone shaped brochs whom the Romans could not conquer; of gritty, kilt clad men wielding two-handed claymores which the English could not defeat. I live in a land of mist...well, here we just call it fog, nothing romantic about that. And we have native peoples who fought to save their land. Scotland has rugged landscape; we have rugged landscape. Seafood, yep, got that covered too. So why would I ... read more

Dear interested readers, Our winged chariot carried us from Montreal to St. John's where we picked up our black loaded Town and Country minivan. We then proceeded to the Franklin Hotel where we met some friends of Jen, Dawn and John. They took us to the Gypsy Tea Room where we all enjoyed some delicious cad fish. Notice we are developing a Newfoundland accent. You'll hardly be able to understand us when we return. Dawn is returning to her "Newfie Light" accent, which Jen noticed was absent in Calgary. We enjoyed meeting Dawn and John, and they gave us a list of things to see and do while were in St. Johns. Thanks guys! We then proceeded to the Duke and watched Boston win yet another game. Only Bill stayed to the bitter end. Unlike in ... read more
