We have been kept so busy with tons of activities. Yesterday we went to Cod Sounds school of cookery in St John’s where we watched a demo of Brie cheese making by a local homesteader. Headed to Harbor Grace, where the airstrip Amelia Earhart took off from and other small museums. Dinner in Carbonear at Felicity’s mom’s house and local musicians entertained us. Great fun! Overnight stay in a quaint BnB. Rain all day on Thurs-Headed to Portuguese Cove to catch the ferry to Bell Island for 3 days at the Wabana Inn. After an amazing 3 course meal, a local artist came to the Wabana Inn to teach us to make a copper wire pendant. ... read more

Started early today to checkout as many sights as possible. Breakfast at Rocket Bakery & Fresh Foods-wonderful fresh food and great coffee. Newman’s Wine Vault-used to age Port wine dating back to 1679. James o’Mara Pharmacy museum-amazing collection of medicines and pharmacy operations circa 1885. NL Railway Coastal Museum( now defunct). Lunch catered at the Cultural center with a flair for authentic local foods. Walked around Cape Spear overlooking the Atlantic. After a boat tour off the harbor onto the Atlantic, we headed for dinner at a well-knowed fish n chips restaurant. Wow, after 8 hrs, about 5 miles of walking, we’re in for the evening. ... read more

Last day on our own before we meet up with the tour group tonight. Nice breakfast at the JAG Hotel before venturing out in the off and on drizzle all day, but that didn’t stop us for walking in it. In fact, a local said to us on the street ‘you must be from away’ and pointed to our umbrellas. That was good for a laugh! We visited the cultural facility, The Rooms museum, an extensive collection of artifacts of the Province. Also learned about the rich and diverse cultures that formed Newfoundland & Labrador as it is today. Lunch on St John’s harbor at Jack Astor’s and with plenty of downtime before our activities tonight. Tonight we’re headed to Yellowbelly Brewery-yep,another Irish Pub- with the group. (We did learn that the Irish ancestors are a ... read more

Today we leave the scenic Bonavista Peninsula and head south back to St John’s for 3 nights. Cloudy, foggy, and rain during the 3 hr drive. Downpour in some areas that were very challenging on the highway. Newfoundland has some interesting and quirky village names : Heart’s Desire,Heart’s Content, Dildo, Mistake Point, just to name a few we’ve seen. Once we got settled into the JAG Hotel in St John’s, we walked Water St, known for their many restaurants, and found O’Reilly’s Pub. This was the perfect spot for us listening to Irish Newfoundland music. As we ate dinner, we listened to the session of 14 musicians that gather through the week and entertain the patrons. Great fun, music, food, and local beer! ... read more

Max and I are anxiously awaiting our trip to Newfoundland and Labrador (NF) for 12 days. We typically plan our own trips but we heard about this 12 person tour through Atlas Obscura and decided to give it a go. We'll fly into St.John's, head up the eastern coastline to Bonavista Peninsula for 3 days at a B&B. Then, head back to St. John's where the tour begins. Hope to blog and post photos as much as I can.... read more

English Version Follows (Scroll down; it takes a while!) ... read more

The day started as the second day of a four day rain warning. Regardless, I decided to visit Middle Cove as planned and if nothing else I can at least get wet beachcombing Middle Cove beach. After scampering around the beach, collecting the mandatory few rocks, I noticed the Silver Mine Head Path trailhead up along the cliff. I checked it out and decided to venture along the path a km or two then return. The rain did subside for the majority of the hike but the trail was extremely wet. Upon reaching a point where the trail was submerged in water, and since my enthusiasm for bushwhacking was non-existent, what a wonderful opportunity to turn around. All in all my hike lasted about an hour. Like most of the East Coast trails, the trail is ... read more

I awoke to a rain warning which did not bode well for my planned trip to Cape Spear. Undaunted, I proceeded as I had to stand at the most easterly point in North America. There I visited the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland, although today it serves as an historic site as it ceased to function as a lighthouse in 1955. There is a more modern and functioning lighthouse in the area. After roaming around I looked for the two trails which crossed the sites boundaries - The Blackhead Path and Cape Spear Path; both part of the East Coast trail system. Although not an ideal day for hiking, I had to at least say I hiked a portion of both. So I found both trailheads and hiked about 1 km on each just to say ... read more

My three week trip to Newfoundland started with a 16 hour ferry ride from Sydney Nova Scotia to Argentia Newfoundland. After the ferry I drove to Placentia for breakfast, followed by an hour and a half drive to Quidi Vidi; a small fishing village just outside St John's. Although small, it is very popular to the tourists who check out the small fishing cove, the fishing shanties and of course the Quidi Vidi microbrewery. The next day I visited Signal Hill in St John's and completed the North Head Trial, the trail from Signal Hill down to the Battery. The trail skirts the Narrows, the narrow entrance to St. John's Harbour. The trail down is 1.7 km and ends at the Battery, a unique collection of small houses, fishing shacks along a narrow, narrow road. This was ... read more

Day 0 June 30th Distance travelled : 7.1km Home -> Sarah's place After a week of selling almost everything we own (for the 3rd time), it's time to hit the road. Surrounded by the people we met here, giving us a heartfelt send off, I question the motivations for leaving in the first place. A restless soul? Family? The prospect of a snow-free May? Regardless, changes are coming! New jobs, new house (purchased sight unseen), friends, and family we haven't seen more than a dozen times in the last 8 years are some of the reasons we've decided to move back home to BC. Our month long trek across the country feels like a final hurrah before we settle down back to where it all started. This journey has much more than a physical destination. Day ... read more
