Bonavista: we saw our first puffins at Elliston, near Bonavista. They get our vote for the cutest birds going. - also really enjoyed the Trinity pageant - we followed a group of actors through the town as they played out the history of Trinity. - another highlight was a tour of a recreated outport - featured in the mini series Random Passage. Placentia: settled by the French in the 1600s it was a stop on our way to Cape St. Mary's and Cape Race. Witless Bay: another great Newfoundland placename! Our favourite of 11 B&Bs; Elaine's - where we took the zodiac whale finding adventure and passed by the largest puffin colony on the island. St. John's: claims to be the oldest city in North America, settled around 1500 - we have 3 full days here ... read more

Hello Flying into St John's, I kept waiting for that moment where you break through the cloud and can see the land below. The wheels went down, and I kept waiting. Then suddenly I saw the wheels of the plane hit the tarmac. Slightly surprised I turned and looked at the guy next to me, who smiled and said "Welcome to Newfoundland, the world's foggiest place!" I've spent nearly four weeks volunteering at the Admirals Adventure B&B , with two Germans (Julia and Simone), a French Canadian (Catherine), and a fellow Kiwi (Dawn). The place is run by a jovial Newfie, Bruce. The homemade alcohol was free flowing; three sizable excellent meals were dished up each day. So life here was good. We built a stone fire place, made wine and beer, kept the B&B tidy ... read more

OK, Folks...The most exciting adventure of this trip was a whale watch in a small boat and just enjoy the pictures that we were able to get!!! This last stop has been the most beautiful and I'll include a few pictures of our view. Really special,. We leave here on Saturday morning, the 12th, and will be back in Richmond on the 27th. We came to the St. John's area on Sunday and have really enjoyed it. It is built on the sides of mountains and the houses are kind of "stacked" up. The historic downtown area is pretty cool but Bob and I both felt it wasn't a very clean city...lots of graffiti and crazy looking kids (like Picadilly Square in London) around. You can go up to Signal Hill and that is where the first trans-Atlantic signal was heard in 1904, I think. Anyway, we stayed there for 3 days and the last day was the BEST!! We had so much rain and dreary weather in Grand Falls--Windsor and that last day we woke up to a beautiful and sunny day. We did a drive called the Baccalieu Trail which took about all day. It is a ... read more

Hello :) I was having problems publishing this blog so if you've had ten billion emails I apologise. If you haven't, well here you go!!!! It's amazing how in the space of a few short days you can be on one side of Canada, then the other, then the other and then the other. The life of a flight attendant I suppose. This time however, it was a mix of business and pleasure. A work trip saw me swerve across the country ending up in St John's, Newfoundland. Newfoundland is full of history and has has a flair to it's European roots. Pubs abound and the people are happy and friendly. I had enough time here to head out for a walk to Signal Hill. A well known sight in St Johns. The hill is part ... read more

Hurricane Chantal blustered through as we started our 11th day of cycling...needless to say "some" of us enjoyed the excuse of a major storm, flooding, and state of emergency in many towns in order to take a taxi for our very last 50km ride into St John's. I was looking forwards to those 7501100km tail winds...but apparently they can be unsafe. I said goodbye to this fascinating land that has a carnivorous plant for its provincial "flower" (flower ?) and headed back to Victoria.... read more

Treena has been in here in St johns for 3 days now, and this is my second. Yesterday we finished putting our bikes together, pumped up the tires, Treena popped one of mine, and went for a short, but brilliant ride along the coast and up through some hills. The bikes worked great, and the legs and lungs seem to be functioning pretty well. Today we set off for a beautiful 3 hour hike along the East Coast Trail that startetd at the lighthouse at Cape Spear and brought us back to the house we are staying at here in Maddox Cove. We are staying with Shelley and Bern who have been incredibly accomidating. Its been nice to sleep in a real bed, and have real meals, while trying to figure out my jet lag. ... read more
