Greetings from Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. We are now 2 hours ahead of you in the time zone. It is late. I am tired. We had a long day today. We woke-up and decided we should do a little tour or something today. We were busy today. The boat docked here around 10:30am and we were in line to get off the boat by 11am. We walked to the City Market. It was cool to see but it was also located up the steepest street in Canada (for reals). Yikes what a climb that turned-out to be. After touring that area, we walked back down and decided to have a 1:30pm drink at a local lobster café/pub because we weren’t hungry. At 2pm, we caught a tour we purchased when we got off the boat. ... read more

Up and out the door. We drove to Prince Edward Island. About a 3 hour drive. The bridge over to the island is 13k long. We hit the tourist info building then headed towards our first nights stay. We stopped at the College of Piping. As you can guess they teach you how to play the bagpipes. Not much was going on because it is a summer school. College students study there during the summer and then head back to university. We wanted to visit the Wyatt House, but our tourbook said it would be closed. When we talked to the info people, they told us to go to the archives across the street and see if we could get them to give us a tour. We told them we came all the way from California ... read more

We left Truro and headed toward New Brunswick. Our first stop was a place called Hopewell Rocks. This area has the highest tides in the world. The tide change the day we were there was 39 feet. At low tide you could walk out 200 yards from the beach onto the sea bottom. At high tide the beach was under 6 feet of water. We happened to get there as the tide was coming in. The guide said it raised about a foot every 10 minutes. So we didn't get to sea the sea bottom. After that we drove into Fundy National Park. We found a nice trail to a waterfall and I hiked it. Stacy stayed at the car. We then drove to Sussex and spent the night in a classic 1950's motel. Very simple, ... read more

Lake George to Englishtown Thom took me back out to the highway in the morning because, in his words, "There's no reason you need to ride any distance that doesn't get you farther east." Before we parted he asked me how many flats I had had. "None", I said without knocking on wood. Ten kilometres down the road my back tire went flat. The day was off to an inauspicious start, though the tube repair went without a hitch. I pedaled back down toward the St. John river and then east and before long I came to Fredericton. After seeing so much of the Acadian French part of the province, Fredricton seemed very English. I rode by huge stately mansions on the river and shady parks with paved bike paths. The city did not seem very ... read more

English Version Follows! Scroll down, it takes a while!

After leaving Quebec City, we drove along the south shore of the St. Lawrence Seaway until we were north of Maine, then cut east to the eastern shoreline of Canada at Campbellton, New Brunswick (NB). We actually crossed out of Quebec and into NB when we crossed the Restigouche River at a small town named Salmon Lodge. Let me tell you, I was never so glad to see English language road signs again. At least then we knew for sure we weren't lost. We continued down along the river to Campbellton which is right of the mouth of the river as it empties into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Our trip across from the St. Lawrence took us right along the Matapedia River, which flows through an absolutely gorgeous canyon. The trees were just starting to ... read more

The highest (and lowest) tides in the world. Walk kilometres along the ocean floor. Flowerpots. Sea caves and arches. Mud flats. You can do and see it all at Hopewell Rocks - a provincial park in New Brunswick, Canada. A wonderful day outing. During a three hour window before and after low tide, you can walk along the ocean floor and explore the unique rock formations including the famous flowerpots as well as many, many rock structures. The journey begins with a short walk along a well maintained trail to the entrance of the walking area.. After decending steps (101 to be precise) you actually reach the ocean floor. During the low tide you can walk approximately a kilometre and a half marvelling at all the rock structures as you explore. It can be a little ... read more

Rained overnight. Went into Alma for breakfast, then to Fundy NP visitor center to finish up Xplorers (the Canadian equivalent to Junior Ranger). Went back to Hopewell Rocks to see high tide. Drove to Kouchibouguac NP and visited visitor center which was awesome. Saw a movie and learned about the area’s historical and environmental significance. Kouchi is a new park – less than 50 years old. They bought out people’s houses from 7 villages to make the park due to its’ significance in the history of the Migmac Indians and the ecosystem right on the coast of NB. Our campground was adjacent to the playground which was nice so the kids could play, but bad because other kids played LATE. Also it was cloudy so we couldn’t see the stars.... read more

Drove to Canada. The kids have been getting along great. The music for this trip has been Pentatonix. We’ve been trying to stick to our no electronics in National Parks (included Adirondacks) rule. Arrived in Fundy National Park on the Bay of Fundy. The Bay of Fundy experiences the world’s highest tides, as much as 40 ft. Visited the Flower Pot Rocks at Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park. Hopewell is a place where, at low tide, you can walk on the ocean floor near cliffs and rock formations. We built cairns every 5 minutes to see how much the tide went out! Great experiment. We will return tomorrow to see it at higher tide. At high tide the water covers the ocean floor and part of the rocks and cliffs. We returned to the campground for dinner, ... read more
