Fredericton, New Brunswick 21 & 22 August 2016 We followed the St John river valley from Grand Falls all the way through to Fredericton. It was a beautiful drive through little villages and lots of farmland growing mainly oats, corn, lucern and fruit such as strawberries, raspberries, apples etc. We arrived in Fredericton in the late afternoon, checked into our hotel and then walked into the town for dinner close to the local lighthouse. Fredericton is the capital of New Brunswick and is located along the St. John River. It is the cultural, artistic and educational centre of the province. The population of City of Fredericton is 50,000 (greater Fredericton 84,000). The city is situated in the west-central portion of the province and, along with Moncton and Saint John, is one of the main urban centres ... read more

Cabano, St Jacques Gardens, Grand Falls 21 August 2016 After leaving the St-Anne region and the Island of Orleans in the middle of the St Lawrence River we drove south again, through Quebec City again crossing to the east side of the St Lawrence River. We then drove along the Freeway north through Riviere-du-Loup and across to Cabano for the night. OMG, this accommodation was the most ‘interesting’. We were having some trouble finding accommodation as it was the second last week of Canada’s long summer school holidays and Canadians were obviously squeezing every last opportunity to go away. And as we were booking accommodation no more than 2 days ahead, a lot of the accommodation was booked out. Our hotel in Cabano, which was a very small place, was attached to a caravan park. The ... read more

We left the good old USA and crossed over into New Brunswick. The border crossing was no problem, just had to answer a few questions and they waved us through. We finally found some cooler weather with days in the upper 70s or low 80s and nights down in the 50s usually with a nice breeze. The park we stayed at was Century Farm Family Campground with an ocean view in the small town of St. Martins. We could walk right down to the beach and could observe the tide change on the Bay of Fundy. The tide changes 24.5 feet from high tide to low tide on the Bay of Fundy. St. Martins is known for its sea caves that are accessible at low tide. We had really bad Wi-Fi so we had to go ... read more

I am at my final type of accommodation on this trip - ye olde Bed and Breakfast! I didn't remember that I had booked such a place, but I'm glad that I did. It is also the most expensive place I booked in Canada. But so far, this makes for my 6th type of overnight - at a hostel, with friends, using airbnb, a straight-up hotel, a dorm, and now a B&B. If we wanted to split hairs, I could even say that my 'hotel' in Saint John was actually a 'motel,' but it's basically the same thing from my perspective. Now, I didn't start the day here. I woke up still in Halifax, NS, in my dorm. I woke up earlier than I had expected, mainly thanks to the sunrise. But I had plans to ... read more

Geo: 47.3737, -68.3251Today was moving day. We moved from PEI west making our way toward Huntsville, Ontario where we will visit for a few days with friends at their lake cottage. (It's really a 4 bedroom house, but they call it a cottage.) So, we left Charlottetown at 8:20 AM and 68 degrees. Before leaving the area, we decided to check out Rocky Point, which is a peninsula on the other side of Charlottetown Harbour. When we stopped to take photos, several cows made it clear that they wanted our attention, so we spent a little time visiting with them. Beamer thought they were interesting until he decided that barking was a more appropriate response to the fact that they were approaching our car. We then drove along the Gulf of St. Laurence on our way ... read more

My first full day in Canada! I've driven about 5 hours today, but I've reached Halifax, Nova Scotia, and I'll be here until Monday, when I have my final "big driving day" of the trip - 6.5 hours to Edmundston, New Brunswick. But for today, it's been primarily an seaside day. Even most of the driving was in view of the water, or at least not far from it. I woke up in Saint John, New Brunswick, with the intention of viewing the Hopewell Rocks, a natural formation at one end of the Bay of Fundy. For those who don't know, Fundy has the craziest tides in the world, due to the shape of the bay - it goes quite a long way from the Atlantic all the way between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. As ... read more

Geo: 46.0884, -64.7783We have done a number of trips to Quebec before and given our tighter timeline, we zipped right through the Belle Provance and straight into New Brunswick. NB is the only truly bilingual province in Canada but, for me, it always seemed to have the personality of someone's far-too-serious Aunt. To be sure, the province does have a number of odd ball items that require investigation like a Noah's Ark shaped seniors home or a magic hill where you can coast uphill in your vehicle (even Billy Thunder is putting on roadtrip weight so we didn't quite make it all the way up the hill). But when a small town in the Province claims to be the supplier of a third of the world's French Fries you know that the local Potato Museum is ... read more

Geo: 45.2734, -66.0641At 7:40 AM and 64 degrees we said good-bye to Bob and Gloria and set out on our way north to Canada. We drove for several hours through rural Maine where 70 degrees is comfortable enough for shorts and short-sleeved shirts; Maine, where they are proud of their history and do not tear down old homes to make way for new ones, a place where charming 100+ year old homes are appreciated and are massaged and treated with loving care; Maine, where old churches are still churches and where, in some towns, every other telephone pole has a large American flag mounted on it, flowing in the gentle breeze. We drove through small towns where people are born and raised, work all of their lives, raise their families, die and are buried in the ... read more

On the 20th, Friday, it was a reluctant leaving taking of the Artisan Suites because the COUGH has hit me again. Here at the campground the toilet is a bit further than a jump from bed to toilet bowl. When it is dark there is no problem ... the dog walkers let their pets piddle all over the place during the morning pippy parade ... and almost every RV has a dog. One family had two Golden Retrievers and a German Shepherds. …but I’m getting ahead of the narrative. Fundy National Park The park has finally opened ... who knew it was Victoria Day Weekend???? To reach the park gates a 336m mountain had to be crossed. With popping ears and in 3rd gear the gates and the visitors centre came into view. Never did get ... read more

It was Highway #1 with trucks in front of me and transports behind me. I persevered ...did not exceed 100 k but watched my gas tank indicator sink. The Americans in the 70's had something with their announcement to go no faster than 50mi.hr ...it does conserve the petrol. My stay at http://bocabeccottages.ca was very pleasant. My co-pilot and I made it to Hopewell Cape in good time without incident. On this route more than seven cemetaries were encountered and last of all a funeral home. I drove very carefully. So far during this trip I have seen five burned out houses, three cats running in front of my van and six deer (two of them dead).
