Bein oh bein oh bein... Here we go readers, the final country of our tour and so one of the final posts. It's been a long time coming, as Canada was when we were on the road. But once we arrived it was certainly worth it. We made it up to Canada after getting a painfully early bus from Boston to the border, where Ginette (Em's Mum) and Geraldine (Em's Memere) met us. After confusing the US border cops, who interpreted our search for a toilet as us trying to run the border, we made it into Canada rattled but ready for the wedding. The reason we arrived so early in June was for Emilie's cousin's wedding, at which Suzanne the bride had asked Em to be a bridesmaid. The wedding was lots of fun, held ... read more

Bay of Fundy and Hopewell Rocks has 45 foot tides. It is incredible. There's so much history here, whalers, Acadians, Dutch, Basque,English, German. One town might be all German names and the next was settled by Scotsmen. Lunnenburg has a monument to the "Men who go down to the sea in ships." In 1926-27 this tiny village lost over 200 men and boys to storms at sea.... read more

wow. Today I got to walk in the Bay of Fundy at Hopewell Rocks. We stayed the night in Moncton and got to the park at almost low tide. After climbing down 99 steps I walked where they have 45 foot tides. Just like the pictures, it was something I'd always wanted to see. Then we drove over the 13 km long Confederation bridge to PEI and had a traditional lobster supper. I actually ate mussels and clam chowder. For 2 nights we're staying in a grand old hotel in Charlottetown and the Aussies and I have taken to going to pubs. Tonight we found one with live local music. Tomorrow the tour goes to the musical Anne of Green Gables and then we will be back at the pub where I will introduce them to ... read more

North America » Canada » New Brunswick » St John July 19th 2010

After picking up our rental car in Maine, we headed for St John, New Brunswick. We took the scenic route on Highway 1 and crossed over into Canada at St. Stephen. Then it was only about 100 kilometers to St John. It is the oldest incorporated city in Canada and contains a population of about 70,000 people. The city sits at the mouth of the St John River on the north shore of the Bay of Fundy which is known for having the highest tides in the world. We stayed in the downtown area of the city and all of the attractions that we wanted to see were within walking distance. The fist place we visited was the Loyalist House. The young woman who showed us around was dressed up in the clothing worn during that ... read more

Three weeks from today I will be leaving on a jet plane for Ghana. It's hard for me to believe that it's so close because I am consumed with what has to be done now, such as school work(not that I really care about getting it done, unfortunately), finding an apartment to live in for September and participating in end of year activities. At the moment I feel like I am too scatterbrained because of everything else that is going on to really write a good post about my current thoughts but I thought I would recap an Expectations & Anticipations exercise all of us Intercordians filled out during the last seminar we had... What are the five things you are most looking forward to about your Intercordia experience abroad? 1. Dancing. It may sound a ... read more

Today marks a month until my departure to Ghana. Things are slowly but surely coming together and my emotions are a mix of everything. For those of you who don't know much about my upcoming trip, I'll try to fill you in as best I can. This past December I was accepted into a program offered through my school (St. Thomas University, located in Fredericton NB!) called Intercordia Canada. Intercordia sets itself apart as an organization that invites students to 'See the world through the eyes of their heart. Intercordia participants are not expected to be agents of change. Change comes slowly and Intercordia strives to show students that when we give of ourselves, making use of the gifts and talents we already possess, we can have a positive influence on the lives of others. Intercordia ... read more

Hi everyone! After Charlottetown we traveled to Summerside PEI. Again we scored an amazing room. This one had a canopy bed with stairs to get up into it. We had a fireplace and a Jacuzzi tub. The rest of the team are not impressed! We went across the road and bought two fresh cooked lobsters. After the evening celebration we went back to our room put on our robes and enjoyed our lobster dinner. We travelled to Moncton NB the next day. Confederation bridge was amazing. Longest bridge in Canada. We did an evening celebration on the football field at the university. Traveled to Saint John the next day. So far this is my favorite city. Oldest in Canada. Evening celebration right on the harbour. The next morning we got up early and went for a ... read more

So I get the bus from Quebec, and head for New Brunswick. The countryside seems to be a grim rural wasteland, with snow and earth and industrial towns with names like St. Louis du Ha! Ha!, presumably named to offset the drab and dreary landscape. Or it could just have been the weather and the time of year - maybe it looks great in the summer, I don't know. At least we left the snow behind when we left Quebec. I arrive in Fredericton, where I am couchsurfing with Leah, who is having some of her friends over for dinner when I arrive, and then they head out for a concert that sold out weeks ago. So my first night in Fredericton is spent watching DVD's and drinking tea with Ruger the dog for company - ... read more
