We got up and got the Kia Soul packed up and headed for Fredericton, New Brunswick! I’ve never been to the Maritimes before!!! SO excited!! Along the way we stopped at a gas bar and I even got to pick up a package of fresh, authentic cheese curds!!!! YAY! We’ve been so busy I haven’t had time to get some of the things that I was hoping to have like a Montreal Bagel booo...oh well I’ll just have to come back for another visit! The New Brunswick landscape is SO beautiful! Sprawling forests and lakes and a smart thing that they built…a wildlife fence to keep deer and moose etc from running out and getting hit by the traffic. We so need that in northern Ontario!! On the way to Fredericton we had to make a ... read more

We're running out of days in Canada, but we are still seeing some cool sites. We headed north out of Charlottetown up to the north coast and walked on the red sandy shores of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The water was pretty cold but people still swim in it. We didn't see anybody swimming when we were there as it was only 65 degrees. Lots of cottages everywhere and it looks to be a very popular place for Canadian summer vacations. We stopped at a local market and purchased a bag of new potatos. There are potato farms everywhere on the island, and the dirt is red. We also stopped at the House of Green Gables in Cavendish and that was interesting. Just stayed long enough to snap a few photos and then we headed ... read more

In the last blog entry, I had biked along the delightful cycling trails of Quebec on the Trans Canada Trail, en route to New Brunswick. Almost immediately after crossing the border and biking through the town of Edmunston, the trail deteriorated into a state that can only be described as mostly unusable. Gone were the young families, the elderly, and shrieks of laughter I heard along the trail in Quebec, these sounds replaced by the silence of the forest (not so bad) and occasional growl of an all-terrain vehicle or shotgun firing (not so good), and the squeaks and groans from my bicycle as it bounced over rocks and became bogged down in ankle deep sand (downright unsettling). Here in New Brunswick, the trail seems lost and forgotten, grown over and neglected. The gates which once ... read more

Before we begin we thought we'd share a quote we enjoyed while reading about the Tour Du France: "His body heaved at the pedals, like an automaton, on two wheels. He wasn't going fast but he was at least moving. I trotted alongside him and asked 'Who are you? What's going on? Where are the others?' Bent over his handlebars, his eyes riveted on the road, the man never turned his head nor uttered one sole word. He continued and disappeared round a turn. Steinès had read his number and consulted the riders' list. Steinès was dumfounded. 'The man is François Lafourcade, a nobody. He has caught and passed all the cracks' ... Another quarter-hour passed before the second rider appeared, whom we immediately recognized as Octave Lapize. Unlike Lafourcade, Lapize was walking, half leaning on, ... read more

In July Karen and I along with our friends Carl and Bird visited Campobello International Park in New Brunswick Canada. This was the summer home of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s family. It’s a very lovely setting and must have been a peaceful retreat for him growing up and the place where he first experienced polio. This must have been an incredible annual journey before airplanes and automobiles. It took us over eight hours to drive there from Beverly. We enjoyed the day on the island visiting the homes and hiking the trails. The park is operated by the US and Canadian Park Service. The temperature was over 100 degrees today in Boston but it was barely in to 70's here with fog. ... read more

Welcome to New Brunswick, land of the winding narrow roads, roadside blueberry markets and lapping waves on rocky outcrops. We left Quebec and headed on to New Brunswick, which is where we are still. We have been staying with my Auntie Brenda just outside Saint John in the lovely little town L’etete. The house is directly on the water and we get to see the tides come in and out from the big back deck. There are 2 little beaches right off the back of the property, where a friend of the family’s went and picked us fresh scallops for dinner the night we arrived. He just suited up in a dry suit, put on a tank of air and spent an hour gathering scallops and interesting sea life for us to look at. He brought ... read more

Where are we now? We are currently writing this inside of our tent with what little daylight is left still peeking through a cloudy sky at 6:34 pm in New Brunswick, in Canaan Forks, about two thirds of the way between Fredericton and Moncton. Where is our tent? It is on the porch of a house of some random guy who owns this place, but actually lives in another house, and is in the process of moving. We know this because he told us when we asked if we could pitch a tent on his yard for the night. As we were biking down the old Trans Canada Highway at about 5:30 pm, the rain went from bad to worse, and we knew it was time to stop. In the hopes that some nice family would ... read more

With our long stretch and late night behind us, we slept in even more than usual this morning. Since we were staying in the same place for two nights again, we once more had the freedom to buy a wider range of foods - and some foods that we've really been missing, so last night we picked up some cereal and milk, something we haven't had since we left. We had a little last night for a snack, but had more today for breakfast. When we headed out, we aimed straight for the tourist centre to find some fun things to do in Fredericton for the day. On our way there, we passed a little play going on in the public park, and stopped to watch. It was a Star Wars spoof, with a theme of ... read more

When our alarm went off at 5:30 this morning everything was still dark. The sky had started to lighten a little, but there was no sun yet, and there are no lights to turn on in the tent. With no light, and soaking wet grass from the rain, we weren't prepared to start packing things up, so we set the alarm back an hour, and grabbed an extra hour of sleep. When our alarm went off at 6:30 this morning, things were looking good. The sun was starting to come up, we found our tent and possessions completely dry, and were looking forward to one last push before another day off. We packed up our stuff and our tent, and had a small bite, but planned to eat a real breakfast right in town before we ... read more

As yesterday was a late night, today we started more slowly than usual. We got up on time, and headed to a nearby diner for a hearty breakfast (about a 2 minute walk from the motel), but afterwards we were tired and slow to get moving. After taking off, we were still slow and tired. We are in the middle of our longest stretch of continuous biking without a day off, and it is taking it's toll. Eric especially, who was up later than usual last night dealing with internet problems while trying to finish off uploading the blog, got less than the usual 8 hours of sleep could really feel the fatigue. Despite our tiredness, when we were moving we were moving well. The roads were still hilly, but not unreasonable, and we had a ... read more
