June 22 - 23 We left Bonaventure in the morning and basically drove through to Caraquet, New Brunswick today. It was our biggest day of driving. Caraquet is the centre for the Acadian region of New Brunswick. We had booked a cottage on the beach in Bas Caraquet, and boy did we luck out. For $125 a night it was a fabulous place to stay. We wished we could stay longer. Our beautiful little 2 bedroom cabin was very new and very nice. It faced right onto the huge playground and splash park, surround by grass, and then in front of that was the sandy beach and the ocean. We really lucked out too because we had sunshine from the evening we arrived until our last night there. We arrived at supper time and had picked ... read more

After we made stops in Maine at York Beach to see our friends, we headed up the coast to Portland, Bar Harbor, Auburn, Lewiston, and Acadia National Park. After spending the night in Bangor, we finally arrived in Canada for some Whale Watching! Observed several finbacks and a minke. We also saw a bald eagle, jellyfish, and harbor porpoises. Great trip!... read more

It has been over six weeks since I made my return back to my hometown in Canada. Over the course of this period of time I have caught up with friends and family, watched my life come to a stand still as minutes turned into uneventful days and melancholic weeks. There has been some good road-trips (Cape Breton), and it was fun to celebrate my birthday on home turf. When I booked my flight home I kept in mind that I wanted to celebrate Halloween in Canada. Last year I spent Halloween in south island New Zealand where it is not widely celebrated, so this year I was looking forward to the commercial holiday of Halloween in Canada. I wanted to dress up, drink and have fun with my friends. This year one might have seen ... read more

Continuing on the checklist of people to see and things I wanted to do while I was home. This time the Volkswagen and I were on our way to southern New Brunswick to a place just outside of Saint John called Grand Bay to visit my great friend since childhood, Eric. Eric's birthday was in the near future so we had at least one excuse to do some celebrating. Now Eric is one of my best childhood friends, as we grow up together, played sports together, got in trouble together and all the other things that occur on the road from boyhood to manhood. So when we get together we laugh, joke, wrestle and usually get rowdy and cause scenes. Now, Miranda (Eric's girlfriend) had made some reservations at a nice restaurant in the city. So ... read more

Alright, here goes... This is my blog about a trip across North America. For those who are unaware, Christian and I are moving to Vancouver B.C. from Halifax N.S. and I want to share some of our experience with you all! Our first stop along the route (after detouring to New Glasgow to see Christian's folks before we left) was to Fredericton N.B. We stayed with my Aunt Lona and Uncle Gary. To be completely honest, we were spoiled! What a great way to start our trip. Now, I had been to Fredericton before, but it had been a few years ago and I never really got to explore very much. So, this was a great chance to see what it had to offer. Fredericton really isn't a very big city (could almost be considered ... read more

If you started reading this blog way back in January, I can only thank you for persevering with us for this long and following our trip to the end. This is the final post in the blog and as you might have noticed, there are a lot of photos to get through. 78 in all. As a reward for your diligence I’m not going to waffle on too much. Hopefully the photos’ll do a good job of telling the tale of our summer, which after Montreal was one long beach bask. The cottages, which are arranged on a plot of land in the little seaside town of Shediac, are a two-minute walk from the beach. So on sunny days we would go to the beach, armed with a good book and a stern determination to get ... read more

7:15 am Melbourne to Sydney, 9:30 am Sydney to Vancouver, 9:00 am Vancouver to Toronto, and 9:35pm delayed til 10:35pm Toronto to Moncton. All flights departing on September 13th due to crossing so many time zones. It was 1 am Tuesday morning when I stepped off the little plane and onto New Brunswick ground. I was met by my parents and my sister at the baggage carrousel of the little airport. We still had a bit of a drive to get me to my final destination for the day. Arrived to my parents house at around 3 am, jet lagged, hungry and in a sort of daze, not comprehending the time of day or much else. Still lost somewhere in shades of grey that lie between unconsciousness and consciousness that I find while on long haul ... read more

That's exactly what I thought when the idea of a weekend picnic was first mooted. Turns out though, there were no scotch eggs in sight, nor were there lashings and lashings of ginger beer. Luckily enough, it was even better an English afternoon beside the riverbank. This was The Picnic. Or the Pique-nique to give it the French name. This is the big family event where everyone from the three branches of the family tree - Gould, Chiasson and Malenfant - get together for a three day party over a weekend in July. The weekend is whichever one falls closest to the birthday of Victorine Bourque, who was Emilie’s grandmother's Mum, and so the matriarch of the three families. The old farm house in which Em’s grandmother Geraldine was raised is still on the plot of ... read more
