It all started at 10:30am. I logged in to my Google Homepage and discovered that the first Saturday in a new year is... INTERNATIONAL BACON DAY!!!! "OMG Craig, we get a second chance!" I cried. "At what?" asked my confused husband. "At the Bacon Hat Trick" I replied. Game on. First, a quick explanation. Last summer, my brother David and his wife Laura visited us here in NB. It started by accident... we had omelets for breakfast, I had some bacon in the meat drawer. Bacon for breakfast... no big whoop. We were headed to Hopewell Rocks that day, departing at lunch. So I picked up some Turkey Clubs at the Great Canadian Bagel. We polish them off and suddenly realize... we were two thirds of the way there... the new Holy Grail... the Bacon Hat ... read more

This past Thursday, ten friends and one bouncy baby met at our favourite gathering place, the Mandarin Palace Restaurant on Forest Hill Road. It is perhaps Fredericton's best kept dining secret but I think the time has come for these lips to spill the beans. So here it is, the top ten reasons I ADORE the Mandarin Palace: 10. Qie Zi (Eggplant). One of our favourites in China was eggplant done in any manor of ways. Hong Shao Qie Zi (in a red sauce) or Yu Xiang Qie Zi (which is in a thick, sweet and slightly spicy sauce) are both mouth watering. Nope, you won't find it on the menu, you have to ask. They don't always have eggplant on hand, so if I know I'm coming in advance, I pre-order it. Oh, and I ... read more

Hank and I returned to the crew after a well needed visit with family and friends. We received a very warm welcome back! Day 38 was a no relay day. I did a side trip to Hopewell Park at the Bay of Fundy with Mike, Monty and Sonny. We walked (wheeled) on the ocean floor! What a spectacular wonder of the world! Day 39 I was driving the command vehicle behind the Medal Bearers. We travelled from Moncton to Sussex. We had some interesting modes of transport. We had a horse and buggy, a vintage car and the "Foxtrotters" (ladies running club) carry the medal. We stayed in Sussex at the Amsterdam Inn. Very quaint and picturesque town. Day 40 I was on command again. We travelled from Sussex to Saint John. What a beautiful drive ... read more

Hi, Everyone – It’s Wednesday and we’re now back in the States, in Maine, in Acadia National Park. The following photos are from Sunday, our sunny day on Grand Manan Island. Should any of you pine for an inexpensive house with an amazing water view, particularly one where huge tides roll in twice a day – Grand Manan is the place for you --particularly if you like quiet, quaintness, freedom from the madding crowds, and don’t plan to make your livelihood fishing. It’s a good place to write a book or paint or throw pots. Since the fishing industry has gone south in the past several years in the Canadian Maritimes, a great many people have had to relocate. Inside the local bank we saw at least 100 properties posted for sale at very low prices ... read more

When I woke up, Ken was not there. I didn’t even hear him get up. I get up, get dressed as he is coming in the room. We have a Lobster Bake scheduled for 1 PM today so we can take our time. We got some lattes and went to the very back of the Lido deck. We are in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. It looks like a very industrial port. We eat breakfast and then shower. It is another warm, sunny day; maybe a little cooler but still t-shirt weather. We walked to the old City Market; kind of reminds me of Findlay Market in Cincinnati. We walked around for a while. It is a very clean city. We head back down to the harbor and have a beer and chowder at one of ... read more

Hi, Friends – The next several photos are of Grand Manan Island. It was our first trip there, although we’d been to Campobello and Deer Islands before which are nearby. All three of these islands are considered part of New Brunswick and are quite close to Maine. We took an hour and a half ferry ride to get there and then, three days later, to return to the mainland. For the first two days, we had heavy fog and couldn’t see much, so the first day we had some good down time in our cozy camper with our fuzzy, warm travel cats and some good TV stations. The second day we went for 2-hour walk to see something called “Hole in the Wall” – a tough walk with a lot of climbing and slippery cliff tops. ... read more

Yet another beautiful day on the East coast! Day 26 and I got to be a Misty rider! Hank was still driving Pace ahead of me and the medal bearers. Got to do some good endurance runs with Sonny and another with Nick and Scott who are both triatheletes. Work my hardest to keep up with them! Slept really well that night! Day 27 I was on Pace for the first time. Driving forward at very slow speeds and constantly looking in the camera at what is behind. You have to keep the MB's at the perfect distance behind you. A little tricky, but it gets easier as you get used to it. We traveled from Halifax to Truro. Day 28 I drove Pace again. Went from Truro to New Glascow. Last few days have been ... read more
