We got to Fundy National Park late in the day but we still had enough time to set up, make supper and try to go see the stars. They have a dark sky designation and a big portable telescope, but the sky wasn't cooperating; it was full of clouds. Still we had a great conversation with the park people and went to sleep full of ideas for the next few days. I thought the park would be functioning at minimum but they did have activities set up all weekend. Jacob and I went to the fungi foray. A number of experts walked with us on a trail along a beautiful stream and then waterfall. The experts helped us see the diversity of fungi all around us. September 22, 2013 Drove off the Atlantic Vision ferry in North Sydney around 9:30 AM, gaining a half hour by arriving back in Nova Scotia. The 16 hour ferry crossing from Newfoundland was smooth and our cabin berths were very comfortable, we both slept well. Got a note from Joe's sister saying that his mom said that Joe was in Gander, Newfoundland, on a flight refueling stop on their way to Europe in 1951. So this was Joes' second trip to Newfoundland. In Baddeck, Nova Scotia, we stopped at the Alexander Graham Bell Historic Site. This was his summer home and there are about 15 acres of beautiful grounds devoted to Bell. Geo: 44.8927, -66.9327If you are in Maine, only 2 hours from the Canadian border, have a day to fill and want to see some beautiful scenery then I suggest visiting Roosevelt Campobello International Park in New Brunswick as I did today. The weather forecast was for a cloudy day, which I thought would be perfect for a drive. Getting to Campobello from Bar Harbor is easy. Head back up the 3 to Ellsworth, North on Hwy 1 to Hwy 189, East on Hwy 189 to Lubec and then over the border to Campobello. The border crossing is easy, but they don't stamp your passport, which is one of the main reasons I went. Now I will have to go to Canada at an entrance where they do. September 7, 2013 We had one last good day on the Gaspesie Peninsula. In 1999, the National Geographic Society listed 50 "Places of a Lifetime" and on this list were the usual icons such as the Great Barrier Reef and the Pyramids. Then in 2009, they created another 50 places this time with an emphasis on authenticity, uniqueness and sustainability. The Gaspesie Peninsula was on that list. We had no idea what to expect when we began the drive but we are certainly glad we did it and would do it again if we didn't have 81 more places on those lists to see! I put Jacob on the plane on Saturday; first solo flight, and he was a pro. I stayed in Ottawa to catch up on details. I had a lovely final dinner with Gary and Louise, where Gary and I drank too much scotch, and we all decided that they would join Jacob and I in Peru for the Machu Picchu tour. Monday, I got on the road again heading to St Johns Newfoundland. I continue to travel only 5-6 hours a day so I can choose the slower highways and get to campgrounds early. I left late, so I took the fast road to just past Quebec. I was disappointed at Pointe Aux Oies, the camp site was minuscule. Thank goodness I had brought the solo tent, it was the only one that fit.
