Geo: 50.1158, -122.945I was begging for mercy after the on the go days of Vegas. I needed to put the feet up and just chill for a first day of relaxation. We were able to fit in a very lazy sleep in and a breakfast at home! Great start. This is a regular rhythm in 413 The Aspens - very late nights combined with very late mornings because Ian doesn't start work till midday and finishes after 8 pm.Monday morning we took an easy walk to start the day. We know where we are now and can go out the back gate of The Aspens, down by The Magic Chair, through the Upper Village, down the three flights of stairs, through the tunnel along Fitzimmons Trail and over the creek, cross at the lights on Blackcomb ... read more

Geo: 50.1183, -122.954What a day filled with surprises. A Zippity Doo day alright!Started with breakfast in the Village with Mindy. (Feeling a little guilty - Ian had to work while we were out having fun - oops, sorry.) We dashed down into the Village for a happy hour special only to find that it was a Monday to Friday deal. Who even knew it was the weekend? We certainly didn't. Apparently it's Sunday today. Missed a "bargain" but the brekkie was delicious and set us up for the perfect start to the day.Off to The Salomon Store to hire a couple of bikes to explore Lost Lake. They supplied a lock so that we could keep the bikes secure. Unfortunately, the lock kept the bikes so secure we couldn't unlock them and Mindy and Mac drew ... read more

Geo: 50.1153, -122.946It was a very sleepy morning at The Aspens with little action before 10 am. Mindy was hurrying everyone up because it was was a big day in Whistler...the sun was out...woohoo!Breakfast prepared by Ian in his perennial red stripped pjs (they must be 20 years old!), a quick shower and the mission of getting dressed...the under layer, the inner layer, the middle layer, the outer layer, the over layer and the water proof layer...and this is a sunny day!Whistler was busy today - it seems everyone was out because the sun was shining. Mindy and Ian were giving us the guided tour of the Upper Village, the creeks and bridges and Whistler Village. We dropped in to the bike shop and met Adam - Mindy's summer boss (first Canadian we have encountered) and ... read more

Geo: 50.1183, -122.954This is the day! All roads are leading to Whistler via Vancouver.I was up-and-at-em at 3.30 am in Vegas and on the airpot shuttle bus from the Flamingo at 4.00. This was at the recommendation of the concierge to ensure that the Mayweather fight crowd was missed. Think I dodged that one because the ride to airport was done in 7 minutes and I was the only one at the Air Canada checkin station - even beat the staff! No worries, plenty of time to get the bags in order. The eventual checkin was smooth. Mind you, would have been handy if someone had warned me that in the U.S. you have to take your shoes off for the security check - before I tied the double knots in the Merrills. May have saved ... read more

Geo: 50.1183, -122.954Mac did the flight SOLO because of the #Fab5 #Doing60 trip but his organization was perfect and found his way to the airport with no problems. It was a marathon 30 hours door to door. WIth the usual uber taxi service of Michael it was all aboard for the flight and with a couple of movies, a book, a few meals and some chit chat with the neighbours, the hours went by quickly and it was time to line up in the security area for a brisk run through Los Angeles to join the WestJet leg to Vancouver.Another foray in security this time in the beautiful Vancouver airport. Straight outside to the bus stop and the last part of the journey was the winding climb along the Sea to Sky Highway to Whistler taking in ... read more

The first stop on our journey north was Crescent City, yet another small town in California. We then had another day's drive into Oregon through the Redwoods National Park and along the southern Oregon coast so this stage of the journey had far more dramatic scenery to enjoy. We stopped at a place called Coos where we were lucky to find the freshest fish and chips ever! Depoe Bay was another stop en route where we could see grey whales migrating south quite close to shore. When we arrived at Rockaway Beach our accommodation did not disappoint. The apartment we had rented overlooked a seven mile long sandy beach which we could enjoy from the large picture windows in the lounge. In fact we were able to enjoy a spectacular sunset on the beach with a ... read more

In order to avoid street closures for a parade, we made an early start. Only 4 miles form our downtown hotel is the Capilano Suspension Bridge and the park in which it resides. It is difficult to visually reconcile the residential neighborhood where you park with the wild area just on the other side of the park gate. The park contains the iconic suspension bridge but also nature walks, a cliff walk, and a treetops path consisting of a series of 7 suspension bridges of lesser magnitude. It all wanders through an old growth temperate rainforest of Douglas firs, western red cedars, and hemlocks, some of which are up to 1500 years old. The suspension bridge itself crosses a chasm with a small stream in the bottom. What could have been a peaceful interlude was somewhat ... read more

Had a greater dinner with matched wines at the Gray Monk Winery, it was such a lovely venue, overlooking Okanagan Lake about a half hours drive from the Sparkling Hill Resort, with a really nice restaurant, but of course all their wines are a lot lighter than ours. We were served lovely appetizers out on the deck with sparkling wine and then sat down inside for the main dinner, lovely views! Today on the road again, did nearly 600 kilometres winding our way back towards Whistler, drove through lots of different countryside, through ranch style country, lots of hick towns, in fact we stopped for a BBQ lunch (burger) at Hat Ranch - BBQ bison and salads. Then as we headed towards Whistler climbed back into the Coast Mountains with snow peaks and avalanche sites, lots of ... read more
