So we arrive at the hotel 11.15pm local time (6.15 am English time) after a 2 hour transfer in a taxi and all I can say is I am absolutely knackered even after sleeping practically the whole flight. I think this cough is getting the better of me. So I wake at 3.30 am and Mike is not a happy chappy with me at all - how can I help it I have slept nearly 24hours! The hotel is fantastic and we have a room which overlooks the slopes it is an amazing sight. I can now see why the hotels boasts ski in ski out facilities. I think we are going to check out the hotel today and the surrounding area and get our ski pass ready for skiing tomorrow. Well we checked out the ... read more

Another great team building activity this week was a Snowmobiling Wilderness Tour. There have been a couple of trips organised by my manager, and today was my turn! Myself and five colleagues got the opportunity to go on a 3pm Wilderness tour with Canadian Adevenure Tours. We met at the booking office site in the Carlton Lodge in Whistler and filled out our damage waivers. From there it was a short walk over to the shuttle bus. The journey over to the Callaghan Valley took about 20-25 minutes. On the drive over, our guide talked to us about the tour that we would be doing. I was definitely nervous about going snowmobiling as I had heard how physically challenging it could be and I was also nervous about using machinery on snowy/icy ground. The guide was ... read more

It's been a while now since I last had time to write or had something I'm able to write about! Working in the hotel has been keeping me pretty busy - I was promoted to a supervisor role in the beginning of January so these last few weeks have been a huge learning curve! Nothing much has changed really - just more paperwork to fill out, meetings to go to and emails to read. One of the great things about my job is that my manager is always looking for great ways to get the team to bond. We've done various activities this week including going tubing at the Coca-Cola Tube Park and snowmobiling too. The tube park was a lot of fun! There are pre-made snow runs which you go down in a giant inflatable ... read more

We have been skiing here for four days now, and it is fantastic! The only down side is the eight hours time difference - we haven't got to grips with it and keep falling asleep and napping as soon as we get in our room! It is a really good ski resort, and can match Europe easy. It is far less crowded than the skiing in Europe that we have done, and everyone here is sooo polite and friendly. What we have found strange though is that all the restaurant staff and ski lift attendants are Australian!! The ski slopes are colour coded green easy, blue more difficult and black hard. Some blues are harder than others, so a red in between blue and black would be handy. I had my scariest fall on day one ... read more

Living and working in Whistler for a season entitles you to Spirit Pass. Getting a lift pass for the whole season means that you need to attend a Spirit Pass session. The Spirit Pass session basically informs you on the history of Whistler, the main rules and tips on staying safe on the mountain and also, as a worker in Whistler, how you can improve the overall experience of the people who visit each year and make it the great town that it is. The session was hosted by local celebrity Mike Douglas - pioneer of the first ever twin-tip ski amongst other things! To be honest, I'd not heard of him before todays session, but afterwards, I was wondering how I could not know about him. His relaxed, friendly approach to his presentation meant that ... read more

The snow has finally arrived here in Whistler and Whistler Blackcomb has opened up the mountain! Opening day was a little sketchy, with only a few of the 200+ runs open, and not all the way down either. Since then, snow has fallen pretty much every day - with 25cms falling last thursday. Theres a big high pressure weather system moving this way so there's the expectation of snow and a low of -20 degrees celcius down in the village. The cold weather combined with the new festive decorations makes it feel like Christmas is really on the way.... read more

I've been up in Whistler Village now for 10 days. It's given me plenty of time to explore the village and the surrounding areas. One of my favourite places in Whistler is an area called The Lost Lake. The area surrounding the lake is known as the Lost Lake Park and makes up part of the cross country skiing trails in Whistler. When there's no snow, you can also follow the trails by foot. Over the last ten days, we've explored a fair majority of the trails - from easy walks, to more uphill challenges, there is a trail for any mood you might be in. There is no real way to describe the view of the lake, so see for yourself in these pictures!... read more

After a final breakfast of bagels and fresh fruit and the third check of the hostel room, we checked out and headed for the bus stop. We had booked the $15 bus ticket to Whistler Village the week before so we all we had to do was turn up at the bus station and check in out luggage. I hadn't really gained any baggage from my week in Vancouver so my baggage allowance was fine and I headed out towards the bus. The other girls had gained even more luggage since arriving in Vancouver and had to pay a fair amount extra for the extra baggage weight. We boarded the bus and settled in for the the two and a half hour journey to Whistler Village. The views were amazing on the drive up - I ... read more

Blog time again! We've managed to find the local library in Whistler to get the cheapest internet use! $2 for an hour...result! Since Ben last wrote we've packed in loads more so I'll do my best to get it all in. After Jasper, we drove down Maligne Lake Avenue (pronounced Ma-leen!) to see Maligne Canyon, Medicine Lake and Maligne Lake. All interesting and scenic sights which we finished off with a walk through some woodland covered in snow! It was a lovely peaceful stroll and we did feel safer with Ben armed with the Bear Spray! Ben was eagerly looking for animal tracks and managed to find moose and caribou by the lake and moose, cougar and possibly bear in the woods?! Back in the van, we headed for Mount Robson Provincial Park with me behind ... read more

Very slow start to the day! Mum and Dad waited patiently for off spring to awake but finally, at 10 am, enough was enough and they were dragged from their bunks. It was after 11 am when eventually we were on the road West (it's actually more North)towards Whistler. I was slightly agitated at such a late start for a relatively long drive of 1.5 to 2 hours each way but once we hit the Sea-to-Sky Freeway / highway whatever it is, that all changed. Again we were spoilt with superb weather and this just added to the most amazing of scenery. This was high amongst some of the most remarkable and picture perfect post card driving we have ever experienced. We made comparisons with other places, but only in part and seldom in scale. From ... read more
