Coalmont welcomes you and will be delighted to serve you provided you are lucky enough to find us open I didn't. The Kettle Valley Railway is an extinct line that at one time connected communities in the Southern interior of British Columbia between the towns of Hope and Midway, the halfway point across the province towards Alberta. The railway opened on May 31, 1915 and were intended to not only ship the rich minerals being unearthed from mountain mines, but as well strengthen Canada's sovereignty in an area threatened by aggressive American expansion. The rails were abandoned many years ago - though some portions operated until 1989 - and have been recently redeveloped in a pilot project focused on low-cost, environmentally-friendly tourism - presumably geared towards newly-retired-but-physically-active baby boomers. The BC government hatched a plan to ... read more

We left Spokane in drizzle, but at least we got the camper down before the rain started. Bob had an electrical problem with their camper, but managed a temporary fix. We then drove basically west to the Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River. The dam is 550’ high and nearly a mile long, with 3 power generating stations. Pretty impressive dam and a very informative visitor center. We then drove a scenic byway to Omak, but it was so rainy that there wasn’t much scenic to be seen, a pity. At Omak we decided to have pizza for lunch and enjoyed a leisurely meal and jovial companionship. As we were leaving the Pizza Hut, I noticed a tire on the camper was low, so Kerry drove to a nearby gas station and put air in ... read more

Woke up to another dreary day. We were keeping watch to be sure and see when Magee’s started tearing down their camper. With no prior indication that they were even working on it, all of a sudden, they were pushing the beds in and almost ready to leave. I hustled to get our camper ready and was just about done when I tried to use the switch to lower the camper back down onto the Hitch ball, when it didn’t work. Turns out that the gas bottle cover had crushed the wire and shorted it out against the trailer frame and burned the insulation off the wire. Fortunately, Kerry had some electrical tape, a short piece of wire, and a couple connectors so I was able to rewire it temporarily. We stopped at the first WalMart ... read more

Finally..the boys arrived! Three of our best friends from home - Jamie, Rich and Dan - flew into Vancouver for a 3 week holiday in Canadia. The first week they will be spending with us in Vancouver, the second week will be our cruise in Alaska and the third week they will be venturing off on their own into the wilderness of Alberta! We were lucky enough to holiday with Jamie and Rich in Cardiff/London/Barcelona on our travels last year, but we had not seen Dan since the day we left him at the airport! We decided to welcome them to British Columbia by spending a long weekend in the Okanagan Wine Valley. Everything was perfect - we got a great new Chrysler to drive from Enterprise, we booked a cheap motel in Penticton, the weather ... read more

Alors ?!

Was it an epic and legendary trip to Thailand? I will have to say no, well maybeeee a little. I thought by going on this trip that I have been wanting to go on since I was 17 was going to change my life and I would find what I was finally looking for. I do think it changed me in mini ways and made me a much stronger person and I also found what I was looking for but what I had already found what I was looking for, back in BC. I'm happy and proud of myself that I had enough courage to travel to the other side of the world by myself and survived it cause trust me there were some times where I thought I wasn't gonna make it. Since it seemed ... read more

Hello! Well, tonight is the night before...Feeling...very anxious and scared!!! I woke up this morning after having a bit of a nightmare. The dream was basically about me not being packed and not ready. I'm pretty sure I'm the most prepared first time solo traveller EVER lol. From having pretty much every single friend, sister, friend of a friend, and even stranger telling me I will have an amazing time and to not worry at all should really put me at ease. I was totally fine the last two monthes, probably more excited than anything, but the last few days...oh boy! I suppose it was the calm before the storm! I know I really have nothing to worry about and as soon as I get there I will be fine but the unknown is always ... read more

The Countdown is ON! 11 days until Cusco, Peru departure but of course we still have a Millennium+10 (Y2K.01) party to host on New Year's Eve This blog about our 3.5 months of learning Spanish in Peru will largely be Maureen's baby, but I'm (Larry)jumping in here first to get this thing started. Maureen is generally far more observant of the physical things going on when travelling such as geography, climate, wildlife, and people; I tend to be a bit better read on items like local spirits(alcohol, not other demons!), cigars, music, and bartering! Photos should be a prominent feature of our chronicle...we now have a tiny camera (ie.less easily stolen) to cart along, as well as an eensie-weensie mini netbook computer to store pics and write blogs and e-mails. The routine, mundane, and expected items for ... read more

I'm sat in the living room with a cold beer in my hand with my new room mate Jan from Switzerland, I moved downstairs in the hostel yesterday as a space opened up and Jan moved in today and starts work tomorrow! Like the rest of us, he hasn't got any instructing experience either but I'm sure he will pick it up as quick as I have! The last week has absolutely flown by and I've lost track of which days are which as I'm skiing every single day and "working" 5 days with 2 days off. I have had quite a few lessons which I have all enjoyed immensely and recieved a $20 tip from one of my lessons which I was super stoked with and will be going on a few beers tonight! My ... read more

I have just had two of the most amazing days ever! We are on the snow at long last! Its seemed like an abosolute age from Monday when we had our training day! It felt a little bit wierd having two planks on my feet again but was soon back in the New York groove and Jack and I were soon shredding the gnar! We then went back to snow school and discovered we would be teaching one of the girls from the rental shop! It was me, Jack and a guy called Henrik from Denmark! After two hours she was turning both ways a wedge turn and was parralel across the slope! Most importantly she had a massive smile on her face which made us all feel amazing! We were then taken around the resort ... read more
