After we left the gulet, we spent about a day and a half at a beach "resort" called Sugar Beach Club. As resorts go it was pretty low tech -- small cabins, an open-air bar/restaraunt, beach chairs, and beach. The water was shallow and We were hopeful about some fun activities (like a beginner scuba course or a jeep safari) but for one reason or another everything got cancelled, so we saved a lot of money and went hiking instead. Unfortunately nobody at the resort could tell us exactly where to find the trail (it was supposed to go to an abandoned village, then to an actual town where you could catch a bus back to the club) and of course we missed the blazes and went off in the wrong direction. Eventually we did actually ... read more

Our flight from Cairo to Istanbul was easy and we enjoyed Egypt Air except that I think it was the most turbulent we have ever encountered! The airport in Istanbul was mobbed with incoming visitors but was fairly efficient. It already felt like a different world! Getting from the airport into the tourist part of the city proved easy also using the super efficient tram system there. I have to say, everywhere we have been in Asia (Bali excluded because most natives there don't travel around the Island), the Middle East, and Eastern Europe has really great public tranportation which most people use extensively. In most of these places they just don't have the kind of traffic congestion we are so accustomed to where we come from (USA - East and West coasts). We were really ... read more

... read more

It's hard to believe I've only been here for three days, it's been such a whirlwind. So let's start at the beginning. August 5th - I headed off to the airport, and after finally finding the right terminal, discovered that I had one bag too many, and that bag would cost me nearly $1000 in excess weight to bring with me. So I left it in London, and I'm still trying to figure out how to get it here. My plane was delayed almost an hour, but once we boarded, everything went smoothly. We flew over the Alps, which was breathtaking, especially because it was right at sunset, and the light was reflected off of the snow. Got into Amman at quarter to 1 in the morning, got my visa, and met Rob, who would be ... read more

So then we got on the gulet, which is apparently the name of the type of boat in the picture. It has two masts, but nowadays it is pretty much exclusively sailed under diesel power. We slept on the gulet for three nights. On the first night we slept on the highest deck and had a really good view of the Milky Way. The next night the captain said we'd be going over open sea from 5 to 9 in the morning, and it would be reasonably calm. Luckily we intuited that the crew's idea of reasonably calm and ours might differ, and we chose to sleep on one of the lowest open deck (its way to hot to sleep in the actual cabins). Reasonably calm did in fact involve a great deal of pitching, but ... read more

Oy Vey. We are here safe and sound in Barcelona, Spain, but not without many mishaps and hiccups, I guess you could say. Well here is how it started. We found a train itinerary that would have us in Barcelona last night, from Interlaken. We got to the station about 5 minutes before the train left, and it is about 5 minutes walk from the Bed and Breakfast. Then, Ian realizes he didnt turn in the key to our room. So he SPRINTS back to the hotel and actually makes it back to the train 15 seconds or so before the doors closed and locked. PHEW! That should have been our first sign. Anyways, we took the first train, which was about an hour and a half, into Bern, where we then went to make reservations ... read more

As Orit (my girlfriend) isn't a cyclist, this isn't a bike trip. However, of course I do my best to keep on good shape also along this hike-and-bus tour - which leads sometimes to rediculous situations. When we climbed to beautiful Sumela Monestary, near Trabzon, I TAFARTI - ıe ran up and down in front of Orit (who walked in a regular pace). The other tourists (most of them intern, Turkeysh, tourists, BTW), where very ammused, and asked me wether I'm a sportman. 'Merely as a hobby', I answered. On the day after we hiked to a Tea Garden, on a steep hill in Rize - and I TAFARTI again. Well, now, as it was within a town, all the locals where watching at me amazed from the balconies. Orit claimed that I run just like ... read more

I left Egypt on a hot evening and arrived in Jordan on an even hotter night. A quick word of advice to everyone: try to avoid going to the Middle East during summer time. I have no idea what I was thinking. One nice thing was the lack of tourist which made it easy to get around and really enjoy Petra in peace and quiet. I spent two days in Amman seeing the sights and researching a good tour to take to Petra (one of the new Wonders of the world) if you have never heard of it then google it or watch "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade". I ended up taking a bus down the Kings Highway which ran through an assortment of Castles and monasteries and breathtaking views of the Dead Sea. After ... read more

Middle East » Bahrain August 8th 2008

Hey there! Well we arrived in Bangkok safe and sound after a 16 hour flight , we did stop at Bahrain for about 4 hours first which was surreal at 5am in the morning, there was a singing reindeer head in the airport belting out classic Elvis Presley songs! It was even more weird when the eyes and antlers started moving as well, I was staring at it for ages thinking god I’m truly jet lagged! When we eventually boarded the plane I slipped into a mini coma as soon as my bum hit the seat, I awoke when I drooled on my arm, classy I know lol! Craig then informed me that shortly after take off a fight had erupted between 4 passengers! Apparently it was really heated and they were throwing fists at each ... read more
