Day 46- Wednesday A long day of travellıng by bus today around the coast ın a westerly and northern dırectıon to Canakkale rıght here lookıng at the Dardanelle Straıts. It seems to be prımarıly a Turkısh holıday town whıch cranks ıtself up for Anzac type events. A bıt prıcey. In the almost 40 degree heat (especıally out tourıng the ruıns) ıt becomes essentıal to have aır condıtıonıng. So here the cheapest room was 90 dollars! Trıp across to the Anzac penınsula tomorrow ıs 50. Dont mentıon dınner. Tourıstıc rıp off ın both prıce and qualıty. It ıs always better to eat good local fod than what they thınk tourısts want. The trouble ıs that some restaurants lıst and speak no Englısh. We stopped ın the worlds best roadsıde stop today and Connıe thought she'd have a ... read more

We got up today feeling like old hands at the transportation thing and headed (almost) straight for the ferry to Princes' Islands, arriving 30 minutes in advance to get good seats on the outside, which had a nice breeze. The ferry trip was about an hour and a half, but biking through pine forests on an island with no cars sounded so alluring... Hmm. By now we should have been skeptical of the guide book. But anyway, we got off the ferry into streets as crowded as Istanbul's. First souvenir stands, then a sold half-block of ice-cream stands, then restaraunts. After walking back and forth a couple of times we finally found the bike places, then a place that had a kids bike. It turns out that the pine forests were about 5 miles from the ... read more

Pammukale is not exactly how you see it in the post cards....a little bit disappointing I have to say. Thousands of tourists walking around and you don't see a lot of terraces full with clear water...you will hardly see one with water. But it's a nice place anyway...... read more

Tag 37 bis 49, 8.750 km von Galway Wir sind in Asien! Juhu!

Day 45 (approx) - Tuesday (I thınk) Backtrackıng a bıt...we arrıved ın Turkey on Frıday at Kusadası, a very slıck port developed for the cruıse shıp market.( There ıs a monstous 5 star tourıst coast all around here....hotels, gated resorts and ghastly euro-dısney-style fun parks for package tourısts...luckıly they stay wıthın theır resorts!) As quıckly as we could we fled by dolmus (mınıbus taxı) to Selcuk. Thıs proved to be a delıghtful town whıch ıs prpsperous wıthout beıng overly affected by tourısm, despıte beıng only about 15 mınutes away from the glorıous ruıns of Ephesus. The roads are all paved wıth brıcks . The Saturday market was the most ımpressıve I've ever seen...beats Venıce easıly....so artıstıc and clean and ınvıtıng. Wısh I could brıng the town offıcıals from that poor lıttle town ın Cambodıa here to ... read more

I’m sitting here at Karns, with Aysagul and all the dep girls, who are watching a movie on Karn’s big screen. There is a major thunder and lightning storm outside, and we have all seen rain for the first time in MONTHS! It’s pretty exciting to see rain and the smell is powerful. A Turkish friend and special education teacher, named Belma, came over tonight and we baked cookies. I have 2 more days left at the rehab center, and then we leave for Istanbul. The past few weeks have been filled with productivity, if you call it that. Verna and I planned a socialization program, and called it a “mini camp” for kids at rehab center #1. We combined the program with the arrival of a volunteer team from the Dominican Republic. On the day ... read more

Today turned out to be museum day. First we went to the Archeological Museum, which Art wanted to see. Silmarien enjoyed the seals (small ceramic cylinders that are rolled in warm wax to provide a "signature" guaranteeing a trade good -- especially used over the opening of a bag or chest as a sort of tamper-proof indicator, which I thought was pretty smart) and the sarcophagi and the reconstuction of the Trojan horse (child size, including ladder and window). Then we went out to the docks to get a ferry to Princes' Islands, where you can rent bikes to pedal through the pine forest (according to the guide book). After several choppy conversations in Turkish, we established that we were at the wrong docks (so much for the guidebook) and the right docks were a ... read more

Shalom, everyone. Thank you to everyone who has been keeping up with my journey - its trials and tribulations, its joys and passion. While this visit to Israel has been most memorable, I look forward to returning to a semblance of normalcy in Minnesota. There, my journey will definitely continue... Sunday, August 10, 2008 Okay, so I’ve humbled myself a little bit in regards to Tish B’Av, this fasting holiday mourning the destruction of the Temple. I have since learned that several tragic events in Jewish history happened on this date or close to it, so observance has come to include those as well. A group of remaining summer students and staying-for-the-year students gathered last evening to enjoy an end-of-Shabbat-getting-ready-to-fast potluck meal, davening, and then a walk to the “egalitarian” section of the Wall to read ... read more

Ok let's not muck around- Dubai ("Do Buy") is big, really big. Nothing here is done by halves and if it's shopping you're after then welcome home. Dubai is home to countless shopping plazas, including the largest one in the world. Unfortunately, as Carissa will attest to, I'm not a very good retail buddy and found myself moaning about walking aimlessly around the bohemith shrines to consumerism (more commonly known as the mall). That said, it's hard not to be impressed by the sheer size and number of malls, offices, hotels, and residential projects underway here at the moment. Dubai has grown incredibly fast considering that there was not a whole lot here prior to oil exploration commencing in the 1970's. Carissa and I have spent the last week here hanging out with our mate Kyle ... read more
