Wow wow wow! I am speechless once again..figure of speech since I write so much..but it was absolutely breathtaking what I experienced today.....Keith and I were (Keith is one of Honerine's son's) picked up today in front of where we are staying by a land cruiser 4x4! Thank goodness again for the ac as standing outside is like having 100 blow dryers on high heat just aimed and you at full force. We were on our way to the middle of the desert but first we had to pick up some foreigners in the Jemeriah estates (very posh). I made my first faux pas as I sat in the front seat, I crossed my leg, showing the bottom of my foot, or shall I say, just your ordinary sitting position that any of us from the ... read more

Not sure exactly how to do this...I had some help in this insane cyber cafe...it tookabout an hour and a half! yikes..he sized them down and still..it was a very lenghty process...not sure why they all seem to be on only one of the blog sites..but that is not my biggest concern right now...I have to be home soon for pick up service to the sand dunes of the middle east..apparantly a 4 x 4 picks us up and drops us off at night..not bad here...and with my maid service who always has these delicous meals ready..I am quite content and grateful for my blessings...it's really hot out again...quelle suprise....I just cant' bring myself to cover up with long sleeves and the sort..I think I am sick due to the a/c...I actually leave stores and go ... read more

Hello again...It's morning here and I did manage to sleep some..My internal clock is so messed up so I got up at 6 a.m. only to awake to a house of sleepers..so what better to do? Yoga! getting used to doing it in the heat, and very well needed as my back is quite messed up from travelling for so long. Today we are going to those insane malls we all hear about..and tyring to get into the 7 star hotel..however, I heard it was 200bucks just to get in to see? Rumour or truth..who knows? This morning we actually called the local hotel to bring us our breakfast..yummy masala dosa! Mmmmm...it was soo cheap..actually the shopping here is quite cheap..pashmena's everywhere..silk things all around..I only wish I could buy something but dont'want to carry it ... read more

Well today was the big three zero............... 30...............hmmmmmmmmmmm Anyway, the operator of the project that we are working on at the moment also operates Wild Wadi (a water theme park) and they had been after us to go and visit for a little while. My boss John said to go ahead and set it up, so since Monday is the only day during the week that we don't have meetings, and since it was also my 30th birthday, I figured that I would go ahead and set it up for Monday July 2nd. So at about 2pm in the afternoon we all trekked off to wild wadi. What a lot of fun it was as well. Wild Wadi is a theme park with a whole lot of water rides. There are a couple of big rides ... read more

We have had a fab time in Dubai, the weather was el scorchio! It was officially 41'c every single day, although the temperature gauge in the taxis told a different story! 45 - 46'c. Apparently all of the builders over here cant work above a certain temperature..... so they LIE......nothing like a bit of bending the rules!!! It was so hot here........ that when you walked into the sea it was like getting into a very hot bath...... nice and refreshing not! We spent a great day at the Wild Wadi water park, although the start of the day was not great after being ripped off by a friendly taxi driver - We get the feeling this is something that is going to happen quite often! To be fair though we have never had so much ... read more

Well the big day had nearly arrived and it was therefore time to gather together friends and family and celebrate the end of a decade. Luckily this celebration was going to involve a lot of sparkling wine and chocolate so the blow would not be too great. Al Qasr, in the Madinat Jumeriah Resort put on a stunning welcome for us. The entry into the hotel is really quite special with 12 golden dancing horses escorting you into the site. From there you get to traverse the main lobby and descend the grand staircase, under the frightfully expensive swavorski chandelier, to the main restaurant below. And it is here that you are amazed with the spectacle the awaits you. The concept of a Friday morning brunch is somewhat unusual to us kiwis. Because Friday is the ... read more

Border Patrol “Lets go to Oman, the borders just down this road. We can take some more shots; it’ll be great”…an inspired idea Ficks; so simple, so easy, just themselves and their passports in a white peugeout 205 hire car, hardly any money, phones that don’t work on the network in Oman. Perfect. So they drive down the road towards the border patrol, they pass through the first and show their passports, they drive through No Mans Land..too late to turn back now. They stop at the Oman border, show their passports, are asked to park the car and get out, walk to an immigration centre, get interrogated by an Oman soldier..an unhappy Oman soldier, fill out paperwork, have their passports taken, try to remain calm, sit and wait…wait some more…try to remain calm, start ... read more

I have found some more photos of what the project that I am working on is going to look like. The entire development is driven around the focal point of the Desert Pearl ship hotel. This ship hotel is in fact a cruise ship, currently moored in the desert that was built at the start of the golden age of travel by a man named Rakaan. Rakaan was a young Bedouin boy who dreamt of a life on the high seas. Though he was born and raised at his family’s oasis in the desert of Dubai, the sea tugged at his soul until he could resist no longer and one day he stowed away on a departing schooner. Rakaan was soon discovered on board the schooner, but instead of being punished was allowed to remain onboard, ... read more
