SCUBA Saz and the wrongest day ever So they’ve now been in Dubai over a week and knowing that Ficks has his open water diver licence, knowing that they could go diving together as they travel round the world, knowing that she loves a challenge, Saz signs up for an open water course at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. Such an amazing idea, such a beautiful location, such a professional bunch of instructors…such a shame she appears unable to blow out through her nose to clear her mask! 5 attempts later and close to hyperventilating she leaves the pool in tears…Ficks as always is amazing and they decide to get some food for dinner in Spinneys (the local supermarket) to calm her nerves, forget about the scuba for a while, relax…..the afternoon can only get better ... read more

For the sake of posterity here is a photo of the mighty Yaris. Soon to be replaced by the Jeep Wrangler that we have just bought! That is right, we have decided on a car. Thank the lord, no more car shopping for me. ... read more

We have had out first visitors. Glenn and Diana McCready paid us a visit from NZ (family relations) and we managed to show them a little bit of the town. After they arrived first thing on Thursday morning we convinced them to come out with us on a Dhow Cruise on the Dubai Creek. This was an evening dinner cruise with a buffet meal. We were seated outside and it was SO HOT!!!! Too hot to be comfortable actually. I had worn jeans in the expectation of sitting inside and I nearly died. The food however was lovely, and the cruise itself was interesting. We had a better view from the top deck on the outside but the cruise itself might have been more enjoyable had we been in the air conditioned comfort below. We met ... read more

Just a little aside for 5 minutes. The other night I was being industrious and decided to clean off the top or our ceramic hob. In the process of wiping this down with a cloth and some water I somehow managed to childlock the hob. Since, at that time, we did not have an instruction manual for the hob it proved completely impossible for us to un-childproof the hob, meaning that we could not cook ANYTHING! at all. After trying for two consecutive nights to unlock the hob, I finally lost the plot last night and stormed down to the reception desk, in my fluffy pink slippers (which the guy in the elevator commented on) and demanded that someone tell us how to unlock the hob. After approximately 1 hour explaining to various people, with differing ... read more

1. When driving in Dubai (I have not made any mistakes driving on the right yet, other than twice opening the passenger door looking for the steering wheel) if the person on front of you at the lights does not take off like they are at the Meremere dragstrip when it turns green, give them hornage. 2. Noone will let you into a gap when you are trying to pull into traffic - you have to barge your way in. But it is ok here, everyone drives like an asshole and it is expected, so there is no road rage. 3. Apartment hunting - it is a long process - be patient and demanding. Agents will not return you calls, not meet you on time, or sometimes at all. And when you get an apartment (one ... read more

We arrived in Dubai at 7 in the morning after a 15 hour flight we were knackered and were really happy that the hotel had sent a driver to pick us up and when we got to the hotel we only had to wait 30 minutes before we could check in. The first day was a bit of a wasted day. We were both so tired so didnt feel like doing much. We spent day 2 at Wild Wadi water park. There aren’t many big rides at the park and it’s ideal for families. The biggest ride was a 33-metre freefall slide described as the tallest and fastest free-fall slide outside of North America with speeds of 80km per hour on which you will experience the exhilaration of weightlessness. It was all over in about ... read more

OK then a quick test, but also a little imagery from a recent trip to Dubai last month, want to try and make sure that I get this right for posts on the US trip. My brother and I went over to Dubai for 3 days for our mothers wedding, and during some great nights (very drunken) and some extremely hot days did manage to get a few photos, as well as stay sober long enough to enjoy the wedding ceremony, although the sobriety didn't last long as the groom could testify. Anyway as mentioned this is mainly a quick test for uploading pics and alike. So first pic is of the Bury Al Arab hotel, which is a lot bigger in person than you expect it to be, haven't been inside but understand very nice. ... read more

We finally went out and celebrated Jeremy getting a job on Thursday night. It has only taken us 3 weeks! Therefore a drink at a lovely bar was well overdue. So off we tripped to the emirates towers where we met up with another lovely kiwi couple to celebrate. Rod and Jess are newbies to Dubai as well and we have a couple of lovely drinks on the 51st floor of the Emirates towers over looking Dubai at night. The drinks were not all that cheap but the menu was enormous! We could hardly lift the drinks menu. Jess had a 88 dirham drink (which translates to roughly $40 dollars). In Dubai that is really quite expensive. The car shopping saga continued on the weekend as well. We test drove a hummer, and actually ended up ... read more

We decided to try a new and different beach park on Friday on the recommendation of somebody at the office. And I have to say it was completly rubbish. LITERALLY. The place was just covered in rubbish. All the sand was complelty covered in cigarette butts and when you went swimming in the ocean you could feel the rubbish rubbing up against your legs. It was nothing like the Jumeirah Beach Resort which is complelty spotless most of the time. We were more than a little disappointed. However the weekend was saved when we went car shopping and I fell in love with a porsche boxster. It is beautiful. However Jeremy is not comvinced as he feels that it is a girls car, and that we can't afford it. It really isn't that expensive and almost ... read more
