This morning we headed to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Using a couple of the maps that were available we managed to get there no problem. Unfortunately, finding the parking was not so straight forward. We tried twice to get through the main gate, but were refused. It is very clear from the amount of various visible security that they are pretty worried about terrorism. We eventually found the smallest entry of all of them that led out into a huge car park that was still nearly empty at 9.30 in the morning. The mosque is a very grand elaborate building and can be seen from a long distance away. We knew that the dress code was very strict, but also know that they gave out abaya´s to borrow. Theresa decided that a black abaya would not ... read more

We spent a relaxing morning finishing off the packing and loading up the car for our journey. Our journey to Abu Dhabi first takes us all the way through the streets of Dubai. As we were on the old part of Dubai, this gave us a good opportunity to see some of the newer parts. After that it has just sand and barren land as far as the eyes could see. It was extremely hot during this journey. We had ample cold drinks on board but also stopped on the way for some refreshment too. Our route into Abu Dhabi took us past Yas Island (F1 circuit etc.) and convinced us that we should return and explore this some more. The hotel we have booked for our three nights here is the 4* Southern Sun which ... read more

After 14 hrs on an Etihad 787-9 in First Class, we arrived in Abu Dhabi feeling pretty good. Slept well in my little hide-away. I have come to the decision that 1st class is the only way to fly, sadly I doubt I will have the experience again. The Etihad Premium Lounge is fabulous. The hummus was the best I have tried EVER! Can't wait to get into Athens this afternoon. I think we might eat Greek tonight ... hehe... read more

We arrived in Abu Dhabi at 4am on the 22nd after a 12 hour flight from Tokyo and headed straight to our hotel. I had surprised Matt with a really nice hotel for an engagement gift - staying at Jumeirah in the Etihad towers, opposite the Emirates Palace. When I was booking they asked if the holiday was for something special and I had told them it was for our recent engagement, which worked out really well because when we arrived we found out we were upgraded to the Grand deluxe room on the 36th floor. Our room was absolutely stunning, like nowhere we have ever stayed - it looked out to the city and to the ocean, and because we got there so early we were able to watch the sunrise which was beautiful. Hello from Abu Dhabi Airport... seeing as i am going to be here for another 2 hours i thought why not write another one of these posts to get started. My first flight was good and a lot shorter than i thought it was going to be. thank you to mum and gem for bringing me to the airport this morning and buying me a nutella crepe in the airport .. that was very much appreciated. I think i have walked all over Abu Dhabi airport at this stage as i sat for around 4 hours in terminal 3 then realised that my flight leaves from terminal 1.. to be fair the walk woke me up a bit. I really should have looked for those sleeping pods, it is so busy here every single seat in ... read more

Did you know that The Flintstones is banned in Dubai? They're not allowed to show it and so they don't. But Abu Dhabi do. My stint in South Africa now over, I was now on my way to London via what seemed like a joke as bad as the one above - a fifteen hour stopover in Abu Dhabi. No matter - I have a habit of making the most out of long layovers such as the ones I had in Singapore, Segovia, Seoul and Dusseldorf. Arriving in Abu Dhabi at 7.30am and departing for London at 2.00am the next morning, I pretty much had an entire day to check out the sights and sounds of Abu Dh... read more

Fabulous three night stopover on the way home at the Shangri-La, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi. The weather was very hot but dry and so not too uncomfortable. Our hotel was great to relax in with a couple of outdoor pools and a great view of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque across the water. We visited the Mosque which was an amazing building with lots and lots of marble and the biggest carpet in the world, soo large it was lowered in by helicoptor. We shopped in the gold souk and had a short tour through the city and lovely lunch in a revolving restaunt looking out over all over Abu Dhabi.... read more

Hey Guys! The day of my grand European adventure has arrived! I spent most of my morning just chilling out at home and brushing up on my dart skills, I've been informed that darts is pretty big in the UK pub scene and I want to show off my awesome skills (sometimes I actually hit the board). If there is one thing you can appreciate its that Perth International Airport is pretty basic, it's tiny but it does the job of facilitating one to leave the country. So I'm flying Edihad to Abu Dhabi with a 4 hour stop over in the middle of the night. The first leg of my trip is 11 hours and I can tell you, that for someone who is nearly 6ft tall it was a tight squeeze, add in the ... read more

There are a variety of elements which, when lumped together, collectively constitute a great city, and those separate elements are as varied as they are numerous. Abu Dhabi is a city which grew out of nothing but a simple but highly lucrative and expolitable oil discovery, and as such, the capital city of modern-day UAE is a dynamic and gleaming urban zone which possesses a few of those vital elements which make the city aspire to greatness. Size-wise, the city centre is high-rise yet compact, and strung together with an impressive crop of stores, eateries, hotels and other reference points of note which make for satisfying urban exploration. The Corniche is the prime stroller's terrain, and the Abu Dhabi skyline is an ever-evolving city feature which demonstrates the effects which wealth has had on the city. ... read more
