Prosecco please I replied when asked if I would like a drink. Sorry Madam we only have champagne! This is so bloody posh, I feel like a gatecrasher at a strangers party. I wonder if everyone around me travels like this all of the time? I bet they know how to get the headphones working. As it happens, even in business class you sometimes get duff headphones but they are soon replaced. If we hadn't given ourselves away as first timers already we soon did as Martin tried out every position on the seat, forwards, backwards, tilted slightly, completely and then proceeded to press the privacy button to move a screen between us up and down - seriously the kids would have played less! Eventually he settles down and we both enjoy a film and dinner ... read more

December 13th 2015 arrived at the port in Abu Dhabi and disembarked the ship to our hotel at the Shangara la. Spent most of our 3 days at the Alkan tin desert dune bashing riding camels and feasting with the locals. A wonderful experience with memories to last a life time. A journey showing us culture of the middle east to find they are well educated, far advanced in development and social networks making a family lifestyle of hardworking people with less than 2% crime.

After spending an entire day on an airplane, I was beyond excited to stretch my legs in Abu Dhabi. I had planned a rather relaxed trip with a lot of wiggle room for exploration. And I am so glad I did because I came across some great things that I would never found otherwise. After the plane landed, I hopped onto the public bus and made my way downtown. As expected, it was extremely hot and humid. Waiting at the bus stop was not an enjoyable experience, but it was well worth the $1.50 fare. Once I was in the city, I wandered around a bit and began to notice just how many mosques were scattered throughout the city. Each one was different and I was enjoying their unique styles, until I realized just how hot ... read more

When we were booking this trip, we had no idea what there was to do in Abu Dhabi. We were only going there to see Theresa´s sister. Once we had booked the flights and started looking into what to do, we realised that we did not have enough time here. Consequently, we tried to cover the more popular places during this trip with the knowledge that we will probably be making a return visit within the next couple of years and can spend more time here then. Most of our time during this visit was in the 4 and 5 star hotels around the city. We did not get a chance to see the older parts or any of the waterfront. We are very much looking forward to our next visit which will be longer giving ... read more

After our slight rearrangement last night, we are off to Marina Mall this morning. Not too worried about the actual mall, but they have a sky tower above it that have some great views over Abu Dhabi. Mick suggested we should have a coffee here. When we looked at all the great cakes on offer, we each ordered piece of chocolate fudge cake each – bad mistake. The café rotates very slowly, so we took regular photos. Once we had finished our drinks and cakes, we walked the rest of the way around to get the complete set of photos. We had a 2pm booking at the 5* Emirates Palace next door to the mall for a very lavish afternoon tea. We drove to there about 1pm so that we had plenty of time to get ... read more

This morning we headed to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Using a couple of the maps that were available we managed to get there no problem. Unfortunately, finding the parking was not so straight forward. We tried twice to get through the main gate, but were refused. It is very clear from the amount of various visible security that they are pretty worried about terrorism. We eventually found the smallest entry of all of them that led out into a huge car park that was still nearly empty at 9.30 in the morning. The mosque is a very grand elaborate building and can be seen from a long distance away. We knew that the dress code was very strict, but also know that they gave out abaya´s to borrow. Theresa decided that a black abaya would not ... read more

We spent a relaxing morning finishing off the packing and loading up the car for our journey. Our journey to Abu Dhabi first takes us all the way through the streets of Dubai. As we were on the old part of Dubai, this gave us a good opportunity to see some of the newer parts. After that it has just sand and barren land as far as the eyes could see. It was extremely hot during this journey. We had ample cold drinks on board but also stopped on the way for some refreshment too. Our route into Abu Dhabi took us past Yas Island (F1 circuit etc.) and convinced us that we should return and explore this some more. The hotel we have booked for our three nights here is the 4* Southern Sun which ... read more

After 14 hrs on an Etihad 787-9 in First Class, we arrived in Abu Dhabi feeling pretty good. Slept well in my little hide-away. I have come to the decision that 1st class is the only way to fly, sadly I doubt I will have the experience again. The Etihad Premium Lounge is fabulous. The hummus was the best I have tried EVER! Can't wait to get into Athens this afternoon. I think we might eat Greek tonight ... hehe... read more

Just arrived in Abu Dhabi. Now waiting for our flight to Mumbai. No problems yet. The last flight went fairly quickly but we still have about 15 hours until we arrive in Bangkok. I literally cannot describe how excited I am. So strange that this is happening to me. I've never done anything remotely as exciting to as adventurous as this. I am travelling to the other side of the world and spending a whole month with a group of people I have never met. It is absolutely terrifying but I know that it will 100% be worth it. I honestly think that this experience will change me so much, but in a great way. Not only will I be more responsible and independent, but I will be more aware of how truly amazing and beautiful ... read more
