Now let me make this quite clear from the start. I had been warned not to drink the water from the tap. Lisa has kindly bought water to drink and to brush our teeth in. Not a drop had passed these lips since arriving. The food has been magnificent and I have no doubt that this is what caused the incident when I got to the race circuit today. Now I know you are all waiting with baited breath of the potential story that this could lead to but you will have to wait because this story starts with me waking up. The day is bright and I can tell that it is going to be a hot one. In fact I’ve heard that they only had a days rain last year and in fact I ... read more

Here I am sat on the balcony on the first morning of my much anticipated trip to the Middle East. This is my second visit to this area of the world having done a quick stop into Dubai on route to New Zealand 15 years ago. This time I would be stepping out of the airport and entering a culture and diverse region that I am totally alien to. Why I would leave my wife and kids for this trip one month before Christmas is a personal one. For years I worked within Motorsports having worked at Britain’s newest race track (at the time) Rockingham in Corby. It was here, working 15 hour days, that I met a family that would become as close to me as my blood one. Sheena Macdonald was working in the ... read more

Saturday, 15th September 2018 After breakfast at Burger King this morning, we headed to the Al Ghubaiba Bus Station to embark on our 140km journey to Abu Dhabi, the capital of UAE. There was a long wait for service E100 when we arrived at the bus stand and it was not a pleasant experience standing and waiting under the hot sun for over 20 minutes. Very soon, we realised that we needed to purchase the silver NOL travel card as it was not possible to pay the AED 25 bus fare by cash. We headed to the ticket window, got our travel cards and rushed back to join the queue again. Not a smooth start for the day! Things however started to pick up soon after we boarded the bus. The journey to Abu Dhabi was ... read more

We have heard a lot about the Mosque in Abu Dhabi and wanted to ensure that we saw this amazing place while we here. We booked a group tour (last minute naturally)) and started what would end up being a very long day at 7:30. Abu Dhabi is in a different Emerites than Dubai 120k away, there are 7 Emirates all together. When Oil was discovered in the region 96% of it was is Abu Dhabi. Once the money started rolling in the Prince gave every family a house and 20,000 AED about 7000 Canadian dollars. The region was mostly Bedouin people and this was a real lottery win for them as you can imagine They also shared the wealth with Dubai and really kick started the growth there. Our bus starting filling soon after we ... read more

I had booked a day trip to Abu Dhabi as I wanted to visit another Emirate. I hadn't been too impressed when making my booking that they charged more for a single booking, feels a bit shady that they want to discriminate against solo travellers. Also when they sent the instructions to get to the departure point, it was bloody miles away. Also the instructions were only suitable for those driving or taking a cab, not great those of us that use public transport. Anyway, I figured out a route and took the subway. Once I exited the station, I used the maps on my phone to locate the hotel. Well that was a big mistake as it had the location in the wrong place and I ended up walking along the wrong side of the ... read more

I've been over ten times to Dubai, but never stepped foot in Abu Dhabi. I have to admit, the Great Mosque has been for years on my wish list of places to visit. Here it is! This blog is just a month overdue, I know! We first spent few days in Dubai. We met some friends, I obviously went back to ski at Ski Dubai, but not many pictures from this part, so no blog either. We rented a car for the two nights we would be spending in Abu Dhabi. First time driving for me in the UAE, and it actually went pretty fine. The main rule here, is be careful of the crazy driving of the locals...because whatever happen, you will be wrong and it will cost you. Good news, it's 90% foreigners on ... read more

Impressive!

Monday March 6 – We had to get up at 6:30am today, to have breakfast and catch the bus to Abu Dhabi at 8am. It took two hours to get there, and then we caught a cab to the Grand Mosque. It is the largest mosque in Abu Dhabi and the only one that allows non Muslims to enter. “Grand” hardly describes it – it’s amazing. They have free tours every day, usually at 10am, 11am, and 5pm. We were there for the 11am tour, and I was surprised how many people were there but were not on the tour. It was so good. Our tour guide walked us around the outside and inside, explaining everything to us. The building is stunning and light. Jeroen much preferred it to any church he’s ever seen as he ... read more

Geo: 24.4764, 54.3705The Zanzibar Buffet is relatively quiet when we arrive for breakfast. We pick a table with a view over the gulf and the many flat islands dotting the horizon. We later learn that over 200 islands make up what is the largest of the 7 Emirates, Abu Dhabi. We head to the aft bar to collect our tour stickers and then head outside to pick up the tour. We board coach number 4 and meet our tour guide Marshall. He's very knowledgeable and chatty, explaining the history of Abu Dhabi as we make our way towards our first stop The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Not the biggest mosque in the world but pretty sure it is the most impressive. We spot the gold topped domes from a few miles away and although I had seen ... read more
