Meia hora ... read more

• 12-17-09 Arrival in Antalya Ok, first big trip in a while. Just over two weeks, one in Turkey and then nine days in Egypt. We took the ride from the pension from the airport and basically went to sleep. Sabah Pension was an absolute great experience and I highly recommend it. They had home cooked meals for good prices, the family that runs it was very nice, the rooms were good for the price, and the watchdog was a little rough looking, but also nice. We arrived in Antalya late so we didn’t get to really do anything other then take a quick walk to the water. The old town seemed very safe, there were police on scooters just riding around. The next morning we woke up pretty early, so we can go to Termessos. ... read more

We arrived in Tasucu at about 7 in the morning with a bit of a crik in the neck, but still not super tired, well at least I wasn’t as I had managed to get some sleep in the bus. We brought our tickets for the ferry to Northern Cyrpus, paid the exit tax and had some breakfast. After breakfast I visited museum in the interim between waiting for our boat to come. The boat took about 2 hours to get to Girnea (the port of Northern Cyprus) and had a proper passport control scan before and after arrival. We took a mini bus to the city centre of Girnea once we arrived and upon arrival as the mini bus drove off I realized that we had left my back pack on the bus. Try as ... read more

The next morning Firaz decided to take us to the place were he had the boat tour yesterday. He told us that he got the chance to do a tour with his brother and sister on their own private yacht for 10 lihar each (about 7 AUD). We decided we wanted some of that also. We got to the harbor – not too far from our hotel and were greeted with an onslaught of the boats people many of whom spoke a variety of different languages including Dutch, German and English. They were very keen on our business – probably due to the lack of demand for the boats during the winter season. Unfortunately most of them did not meet our price requirements as Firaz put it oh so well – I’m sorry sir, but no ... read more

Antalya, very popular with Russian tourists is in the south west of Turkey. From Fetiyhe it’s a good 3 hours by bus. Lucky I found a store with some tasty meringue before we got on the bus. Unfortunately I also experienced a tragic loss after finding out something I thought I had lost from the bus the night before was now gone. Anyway we got to Antalya and Ivan met a guy on the bus Firaz, who was originally from Syria but doing his internship in the states. Firaz took us to the hotel he was staying at which was right at the back of the old town. It was a decent place for 50turkish lihar we got a 3 person room with breakfast. It was a good nights sleep that night. Note: As I couldn't ... read more

Day 2 in Antalya was my day to explore some of the Hellenistic ruins near Antalya. I decided on a half day trip to the ruins of Termessos, about a 45 minute trip out of town into the Tauras mountain range and national forest. I hopped onto a local bus around noon which dropped me off on the side of the highway at the base of the park. A taxi pulled up and took me up the dozen or so switch backs called the "King's Road" to the park entrance. (http://www.exploreturkey.com/exptur.phtml?id=73) We must have climbed about 1,000 feet to the entrance and, according to the guide book, I had another 20 minute walk up the unpaved trail section of the King's Road. The cabbie also informed me that the next bus back to Antalya wouldn't arrive ... read more

The tranquil hill town of Kas was a far cry from the muddy street of Olympos which greeted our dolmus minivan on Wednesday afternoon. For 3 TYL you are dumped at a highway stop and shuffled into another van for the transfer downhill. Aside from flooding 2 weeks prior it was in reasonable shape although the bulldozers were at work in spades (ha ha)! around the ruins site. To enter Olympos involves a steep road down into a narrow valley where many treehouses are built on the river bed or nearby. Citrus trees abound giving some earth stability but I did wonder if the creaky platforms around everywhere would support the continuing shoulder season tourists weight! After a chatty and stormy night with Aussie, British, Turkish and German company I managed to get up early to ... read more
