5/27/09 Family: --- Answer to mystery question from last blog: WE ARE IN TURKEY. That was the Turkish flag. The lucky winner will be receiving some Turkish Taffy and an Evil Eye in the mail (unless customs abducts it). The evil eye is everywhere and keeps evil spirits away. ---------- We have arrived in Turkey (5/13/09). We took a short ferry from Rhodes to Marmaris. Customs asked us carefully about when we left the United States and where we have been. Eventually we realized that they were interested in our potential exposure to Swine Flu. Retrospectively, we were told that customs uses infrared on the entering crowd to wean out who may have a fever. --- Other things that we noticed included that the land had more trees on it. We also noticed that women are ... read more

Baraj gölü kenarında buluna... read more

We made it to Turkey and immediate took a night bus down to olympos. We stayed in this hilarious two story shack... we were just so happy to lay down in a bed after our crazy turkish night bus haha. We spent one night in this town exploring the old ruins nearby and we also went up to the Eternal flames at night. On this random hilltop theres natural gas that comes out of the rocks, they light it on fire and it's so amazing to see especially at night. This is actually where the idea for the Olympic flame came from!... read more

Oh Kas (Kash) I loved you so much! A beautiful Mediterranean Coastal town with Greece in the backdrop. Had a room here overlooking bay with incredible views. Walked through town and found a theatre just sitting there in the hill. Came down the other side and found a big market. So once again bought more olives and cheese and veggies to go with the excellent red wine! Should have stayed here longer!... read more

On the face of it, Antalya had it all. Undeniably stunning, its location was good for the Romans to use its nice little harbour as a trading hub, needing only a few low key defences around it. Wrapping around the harbour like an amphitheatre, the streets testify to the periods of development since, with some beautiful Ottoman buildings, giving the historic district a lovely focal point. Walking around the harbour was slow going - as every angle was easy on the eye and hard on the camera, with sparkling turquiose water leading to snow covered ranges forming its mountainous outlook. But like a beautifully adorned model, the warm heart of this town (if it still exists) was carefully concealed. Dealings with hostels and shop keepers were cold experiences, and people preferred to embrace their lives rather ... read more

Saturday, 17th January, 2009. We set the alarm for seven. Breakfast was from seven thirty and as we were both going to have something we both washed and dressed. Breakfast was a self service buffet and we had cereals and toasts. We could have had eggs but didn't bother. Back to the room, gathered our stuff and down to reception. Paid the bill, asked for the car and it was there by the time we were ready to leave. The reception was very helpful with directions, of how to get out of Bodrum and gave us a local map. It was now eight fifteen. Our ultimate destination is Tasucu, but we know that that is not possible in one day. RAC services says it is 500 miles and takes 14 hours. We had little knowledge of ... read more

Midnight Express - Adana, Turkey I am not writing this from a Turkish prison (Turkish prisons are apparently now high tech and afford inmates generous library time), but just barely. A day trip to Tarsus, Turkey with three of the squeakiest clean World Airways flight attendants: Sarah Gorman, Per Clausen and Kelly Lavik (well, two of the squeakiest) turned creepy, ugly, and almost cinematic when the polis boarded our homeward bus at a roadblock. The cigarette-smoking, leather-acket clad vigilante hauled us off the bus for failing to carry passports. We were asked: “Passa Portas?” The incoherent Turkish question I assume was “Let me see your passports.” And even, “Weir ah yor pah-puz (circa Berlin, 1938)? Our bus, our last Hiltonward bus of the night, pulled off, propelling dust up btheind it. A hubbub of activity ... read more
