All good things must come to an end. The Israel portion is about to join the fond memory books. Today is the last day of our Israel portion of the tour. We got up a little later today, almost like we were on vacation, and prepared for our final 1/2 day of touring. We traveled around Tel Aviv and came to the site where Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was fatally shot by an assassin in the center of the city. Politicians in Israel, like politicians everywhere, have their lovers and haters. Rabin was loved by many but a radical few felt he had sold out Israel in favor of a peace accord and, for this reason, a radical hater ended his life during - of all things - a peace rally. It is a chilling experience ... read more

After taking a short nap I awoke with a start to realize that I needed to get moving! The plan was to do a 2 hour walking tour in Jaffa. So, change of clothes, brush of teeth, grab an orange and water and out the door I went. Not too much thoughts were running through my mind other than getting to the meeting point. And in retrospect, that was a good thing. I will admit to some trepidation of being here alone and wandering the city. But with cell phone in hand (Google maps) I just went out the door without any reservations! The walk to Jaffa was about a mile or so but along the coastline. The Mediterranean Sea is gorgeous! I made it to the meeting point with no time to spare and off ... read more

Dear Blog Readers, Today's breakfast contribution came from 'salad dressing woman' sat next to us. Once coiffed, we packed our bags for a day in Tel Aviv. First stop was filling the hire car with petrol (more expensive than back home at £1.30/litre). Amazingly, we had a sprinkling of rain on the way into the city centre! Once the car was dropped off, having tried to get another $15 out of me unsuccessfully, we got the tram to the bus station. Our attempt to get a hat-trick of modes of transport was successful as we were soon on a full bus to Tel Aviv. The traffic was pretty bad but it took just over an hour and the bus was fairly comfortable but minimal leg room for my lanky legs. We hopped on a local bus ... read more

today was an emotional day mainly because of those who told us the story with such passion sorry I cant replicate it here you will have to make the trip yourself first we went from Jerusalem on the new 6 lane highway to Telaviv and stopped at Rehovot to see the Ayalon institute this is a kibbutz that secretly had a ammunition factory underneath, so secret that half of the 100 residents didnt know it was there and they made 2.5 million bullets over 3 years leading to independance in 1948 and another 3 million in the months after independence when it was no longer secret and worked 24hrs a day, it was the size of a tennis court and you entered under an industrial washing machine in the laundry which concealed the entrance and the ... read more

After many months of waiting for this day to come, we finally were packed and ready to embark on a trip of a lifetime, a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land. We drove to Pete’s house and he drove us to the airport arriving 3-1/2 hours early. We were one of the first to arrive to meet Dennis, our tour director. After going through security which was a snap, we went to the gate and since we had lots of time we had lunch and then proceeded to the gate where our fellow travelers were starting to show up. We spent time getting to know them and introducing ourselves before it was finally time to board the plane. The first leg to Philadelphia was uneventful, a mere 3 hour flight. We had about a 3.5 to 4 ... read more

Took Israeli transit into Tel Aviv today and visited the cute neighbourhood of Old Jaffa. This is a port city that lies on the Mediterranean Sea. It is here that Andromeda of the Greek myths was rumoured to be chained to a rock by her king father in order to appease Poseidon. Andromeda's Rock lies near a natural pier and is now marked by an Israeli flag. We strolled along the beach and visited some gardens. Several people tried to ask us stuff in hebrew today. Flattered that they think we're locals. One woman asked me something about the bus and another seemed to be asking Niklas for directions. Another was trying to sell me something at the bus station. How cute. Speaking of Jerusalem Central Station, we were quite impressed with a bakery we came ... read more

15:33, bus Charleroi-Lille. Belgique.

« You’ve been to Lebanon ? ».

TEL AVIV DAY 2 - Shalom! I was a little better at the breakfast buffet this morning, I didn’t try to eat the whole display. Our tour day started with an overview by our tour guide Matt. He has been with Tauck 30 years and this is his 50th Israel and Jordan tour. We will be joined each day with local tour guides specializing in that area. Our guide today was Or, a resident of Tel Aviv and he proved to be an excellent guide, giving us a well balanced description of the history of the area and the perspective of the various groups involved in the conflicts and challenges of modern Israel. We even had a brief Hebrew lesson. Another beautiful day, sunny, temperature around 80, humidity 60%, light breeze. I saw several barefoot men ... read more
