Not yet 24 hours into my trip to Israel, I am reminded how much I love being with my family here. Sitting around the dining table, we taste local Kibbutz-made wine over dinner and dine on sumptuous vegetables, cheeses and instant coffee for breakfast. We discuss topics ranging from American politics, our shared family history, the tension between religious and secular Jews in Israel, the history of Jews from Cochin India, and the consequences of modern society’s reliance on social media as a primary mode of communication. I am with two brothers, my cousins who made Aliya in the 1960s from the Bronx. Both brothers share their thoughts about this year’s US election cycle, about Israelis’ beliefs (or cynicism) about future prospects for peace in the Middle East, among other subjects. The setting; my cousin Ami ... read more

. We were staying in the Galil to celebrate the Passover in Tiberias near Lake Kinneret also known as the Sea of Gallilee. Our friend and tour guide Rina Yellin came up with an idea for a day tour in that area. This was her second outing to visit various minority religious sites in the north of Israel, this time in the area southwest of the Kinneret. (See our blog "Day drive around the Carmel in Israel" on 13 Jaunuary 2016 for the first tour with Rina.) So we set off with our matzo picnic to our first stop. . Today was the major holiday of the Druze community. So we set off to Nabi Shu’abe. Translated into English this is the Tomb of Jethro, the prophet on which the Druze religion is founded. Being at the Sea of Galilee is just an incredible experience. It is also known at the Sea of Tiberius and Kinneret Lake. It is fed by the Jordan River to the north which travels clear to the Dead Sea. Jesus performed about 70% of his miracles around the Sea of Galilee. We started our day at the Yigal Alon Museum also known as the Jesus Boat or Galilee Boat Museum. That is because in 1986 two brothers who were fishermen were walking along the shore of the Galilee and found ancient nails during a drought year when the water was low. They were excited and started digging with their hands and realized they had discovered an ancient fishing boat. They put together a team of archeologists and preservationists and together moved the boat and it ... read more

Tolle lege! Tolle lege! At the climactic moment of his conversion, St. Augustine describes hearing these words in Book VIII of his Confessions. In English, tolle lege translates into “Take up and read!” This is my suggestion for us this afternoon. After posting this, I’m going to spend the afternoon reading some of the following Gospel passages that relate to the places that we visited today in and around Capernaum. Church of the Beatitudes: Matthew’s Beatitudes (5:1-12) and/or Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7); Luke’s Beatitudes (6:20-26) Church of St. Peter’s House: Healings in Capernaum: Mark 1:21-39; Matthew 8:5-17; Luke 4:31-44 Church of the Loaves and Fishes: Mark 6:31–44; 8:1-10; Matthew 14:13-21; 15:32-39; Luke 9:10-17; John 6:1-15 and/or John’s Bread of Life Discourse (All of John 6). Church of Primacy of St. Peter ... read more

We’ve seen a plethora of stones along this journey; these ancient stones have graciously shared many tales as we have trampled among them troubling their tranquility. They have shared stories of fierce battles in places like Megiddo and Gamla; they have shouted above the hustle and bustle of the Greeco-Roman marketplaces throughout Asia Minor, Greece and Israel; they have whispered stories of the gods who have graced the sacred temples, synagogues, churches and mosques; they have told tales of the dwellings of the diverse peoples such as the Canaanites, Israelites, Philistines, and Persians; they have displayed where various goods were produced in oil presses, flour mills, wineries. And, today in Bethsaida the stones echoed the playful voices of Philipp, Andrew and Peter as they played among cobblestone streets of their childhood home. Their voices reverberated off ... read more

Dear Self, Don’t be in such a hurry to find the Garden of Eden; if you are always looking forward, you may just miss the Garden all around you. Sincerely, Me In the national park surrounding the ancient city of Dan, there is an area called the Garden of Eden. As I saw the sign for the Garden of Eden, I continued walking along the path that I thought led to the Garden of Eden. When I reached the end of the path, I realized the first sign was indicating that I was entering the Garden. This little walk around the Garden was a reminder to myself that sometimes I am too focused on what lies ahead and forget to appreciate the blessings of the present moment. We also had the opportunity to visit Caesarea Philippi, ... read more

Today, we visited Magdala and Gamla. Magdala is on the northwest coast of the Sea of Galilee and is best known as the home of Mary Magdalene. A recently erected church now stands on this seaside town and contains beautiful mosaics depicting Gospels scenes set in and around the Galilee. Ongoing excavations, begun in 2009, are revealing more about this site each year. Gamla is one of the most naturally beautiful sites that we have visited here in Israel. This mountainside town is built on the southern slope of a mountain, which has been carved out over millions of years by the two rivers below. The Sea of Galilee is situated to the west and the Golan Heights rise all around it; truly a magnificent ancient settlement. I'll let the pictures and captions speak for themselves...feel ... read more

Over the last year, I had the opportunity to minister at a hospital and an elder care facility. One of the greatest challenges (and blessings) of this ministry was walking with women and men who were struggling with various types of suffering. Much suffering associated with illness seems unnecessary and is often inexplicable; there are no easy answers to explain why pain, illness and suffering are a part of the human condition. However, one of the greatest gifts of our Catholic Christian faith is that our God chose to become human in the person of Jesus. As we know, Jesus experienced much unnecessary and inexplicable pain and suffering. Today, we visited the spot where the Incarnation, and thus Christ's full participation in the human condition sans sin, became possible. It became possible because of Mary’s ... read more
