Headed off this morning at 8am and went past the sea of galilee and northward we are close to the Lebanese border and the Syrian border here as we enter the Golan heights region and we notice more troops doing exercises and tanks covered in camouflage off to the side of the road. We stopped at rosh-pina a small town near the Lebanese border where in 2006 during the second war with Lebanon they were targeted with many missiles one man who lost a son in the war has set up a memorial and he tells the sad story of his sons death when his tank was hit by an anti tank missile he has set up the memorial at a high point on the hill with a spectacular view over the ha-khula valley , from ... read more

today we left Haifa but first we visited the Bahi gardens the Bahi faith came out of islam but they believe in peace and order they sound similar to budism but with an islam base if that makes sense anyway their gardens are perfect see the pics we looked over haifa from a vantage point and were told stories about boats with imigrants coming in here when the hagana blew up the british radar (by the way I got it a bit wrong the other day the Palmach were the top soldiers of the haganah not a separate group the other group was irgun.) then we drove up the coast to the border with lebanon where Rosh-ha-nikra is also located, this as a cavern made by erosion of the sea which we went down a cable ... read more

Today we traveled to Cana where Jesus turned water into wine at the Wedding Feast of Cana, his first miracle. Upon arrival all the married couples in the group renewed their wedding vows. It was one of the little surprises that we have been experiencing every day. We processed down the aisle in 2’s and then facing our spouses all recited our wedding vows followed by a blessing of our rings. It added a nice touch and was a special beginning to our day. Some of the sites we visit have been destroyed in one way or another but through excavation ruins are found and then churches built on top of them to preserve them. Sometimes these churches are destroyed by war or earthquakes and rebuilt only to be destroyed again. Next stop was the Sea ... read more

Today after breakfast we boarded our bus for the drive to Caesarea Philippi which is in the Lebanon/Syria border. Caesarea Phillippi was an ancient Roman city located at the southwestern base of Mount Hermon, adjacent to a spring, grotto, and related to the Greek god Pan, and called “Banias or Paneas.” The city is mentioned in the gospels of Matthew and Mark. The city is now uninhabited, an archaeological site in the Golan Heights. Near Caesarea Philippi, a city of Greek-Roman gods, Jesus announced he would establish a church and gave authority over it to the apostle Simon—whom he renamed Peter. This is where He declared, “You are Peter and on this rock I will build my church….” It was a very moving experience. Afterwards we stopped for lunch where we ordered some Gyros. So far ... read more

After waking up at 2 a.m. this morning, I was unable to fall back to sleep undoubtedly because of the excitement of what was in store for the rest of the day. After spending a few hours thinking and not able to sleep, I got up and went about getting ready for the day at about 5:00 a.m. Our bags were out by 6:00 a.m. and John and I decided that since our hotel was on the beach, we should go down before breakfast and take a walk on the beach. Granted, it is January and not that warm, so it was going to be a quick walk. Julie, thanks for the prompt. It was worth it. It was a beautiful morning and it felt invigorating to be out on our own for that short period ... read more

This morning got off to a frustrating start. By the time we found our way to the car rental and made our peace with our sat nav system, it was almost lunchtime. Thankfully the gas station on Route 1 served the best gas station food I've ever tried. With schnitzel sandwiches and sugar-free energy drinks to fuel us, we made our way north on Route 90. This stretch of highway runs parallel to the Jordan river. We felt popping in our ears as we approached it. We finally figured out that it was because we were driving below sea level as that was the beginning of the Dead Sea area. Along our route were markers indicating our depth. It was a very scenic, desert looking region. The desert scenery became greener and more lush as we ... read more

With three mysteries down and sixteen mysteries yet to see on this pilgrimage, we will need to be covering almost two per day; but, there will be no mysteries today! Sharon reminded me that most will come in Jerusalem. It is nice not needing to repack our suitcases while staying in the Pilgerhaus for three nights. As I’m writing these words at two o’clock in the morning local time, I’m thinking, again with that stupid donkey. It wasn’t the ultra-annoying morning is here bray, but one that doesn’t belong in the middle of a sound sleep. Dennis had noted that he had seen them in the morning up on the hill behind the Pilgerhaus. I thought the image might be good for the blog, but Dennis continued “He had seen someone out there taking a picture ... read more

It was just after midnight when I awoke, very much awake, and rose and spent about three hours writing the blog from our first full day in the Holy Land. I had slept quite soundly, and after finishing the blog, continued with some sound sleep, anticipating another 6 AM wakeup call that had been placed for our group. We’d missed the excitement of one of our fellow travelers who had managed to get locked in the bathroom late during the night and needed to summon help by pounding on the wall. I’m thinking that this being a pilgrim is pretty rough stuff. At about a quarter to six I awoke again from a sound sleep and asked myself, is that really a jack ass braying at dawn? They have a wakeup donkey here in the Holy ... read more
