The fall semester is finally starting here at the University of Haifa. Classes have begun, and we already have homework. Right now I am taking a class on Arab Israeli relations, terrorism and responses, and am continuing the Hebrew Ulpan (an intensive Hebrew course). The good news is that I only have my regular classes once a week while the Hebrew course is from Monday-Thursday. This means that I get a lot of spare time to see the city and hopefully travel around the country. I cannot wait to visit Bethlehem, the Dead Sea, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, and to see Jerusalem and Tel Aviv again. Although, as of now, none of the international students are being allowed to travel. As you may have heard, there has been quite a bit of unrest in Jerusalem ... read more

We visited two sites today as we drove north of Jerusalem on our way to the Galilee, where we will be for the next week. Today’s sites were not necessarily spiritual visits, but they are certainly connected to archaeology and our Judaeo-Christian faith. Caesarea Maritima is best known for the palace of the Roman procurator Pontius Pilate and as one of the locations of Paul’s imprisonment (Acts 23:23-27). The next site we visited was continually inhabited from the 6th Millennia BC until the 4th Century BC; yes, 20 times this location was settled and re-settled for close to 5,000 years and then slowly abandoned about 300 years before Jesus. Throughout Megiddo’s storied history, its nearby Jezreel Valley has hosted numerous and legendary battles. Perhaps, this is why John of Patmos chose this site for the final ... read more

Hello all, The last few days have been a whirlwind of events. When my dad and I flew into JFK, we decided to take a tour bus to see Times Square. I've never seen so much traffic in my life! By the time we got to Times Square, it was already 330pm and we had to leave by 530. I was so excited to see all of the buildings and electric lights. It was very beautiful and we couldn't wait to explore. There was only one problem. It had been raining on and off all day, and about five minutes after we stepped off the bus, it started to pour. Neither of us had an umbrella. So we had to run to the nearest pharmacy to buy some. However, the umbrellas didn't seem to make much ... read more

Well, it's finally here. It seems like I've been planning this trip for forever, and now it's right around the corner. I fly out from Sky Harbor at 5:55am on July 30th and land in JFK airport at 1:47pm. There's an 11 hour layover between then and when my flight leaves to Tel Aviv, so I hope to see some of New York's sights or at least just enjoy a famous New York pizza while I wait. This is only a couple of weeks away, and there's still so much to do. So far, I haven't even decided what to pack. There are SO many thing I want to bring (I mean, I have two closets and tons of drawers full of stuff here). And somehow I'm supposed to fit all of those shoes and clothes ... read more

We received our courtesy wake-up call promptly at 6 AM by the diligent front desk; but, only after my courtesy wake-up alarm for 5 AM racquetball awoke both of us much before we were ready. It might have seemed odd for my phone to be chiming in so early; except, Sharon had suggested that I set a backup in case we didn’t get our courtesy wake-up. I’m way ahead of you, I've already disabled my MWF alarm for the remainder of the trip. I mumbled something to Sharon about “Are we supposed to have our bags out in the hall by six?” knowing full well that we had just an hour to do so. She replied “seven” just as she was turning on the water to the shower. I at least realized what happened before she ... read more

Geo: 32.812, 34.9987I had no preconceptions about visiting Israel but was both surprised and humbled by what we saw. The surprising side was that I had no idea how many Arabs actually live there and how mixed up all the various religions are. The humbling side was to visit so many sites of significance to the Christian religion and realize events happened here as written in the Bible and these places are all mixed up with both Jewish and Islamic sites of significance and somehow they all interrelate. The Palestinian Authority has areas dotted all throughout the state which are run by them and sadly as Silversea do not go to these areas it meant we could not visit Bethlehem. However our first day was a fascinating one thanks to an excellent guide called Roman who ... read more

Yes. Day three. We keep packing it in with our amazing guide, Nadav BenGal. And great driver, Avi. We woke up to Shabbat in Tel Aviv. Some of the group got in an early morning walk on the beach, though I kept going back to sleep until the last minute. Good I packed the night before! We began (after another delicious breakfast) with the ride up north on main highway, headed to Tzipori. Along the way Nadav gave the group an introduction to the issues of the security barrier, which is called a "wall" by some even though it is a fence in most places. He pointed out where it was a wall for a short bit next to the highway in a place where the highway was right up against a West Bank town where ... read more
