Geo: 32.812, 34.9987We don't get a lot of sea days on this cruise. I think there's only 6 or 7 out of the 33 days on board. Most days are spent in ports where activities and tours are available. Mom likes these sea days where she can get up later and wander around on the ship. She doesn't like to swim because there are too many people around on those days.We hung out by the pool. I worked on the blog while Mom went to the shops on board to browse. The weather was, of course, beautiful so we spent some time on our balcony. Just a nice relaxing day. Tomorrow we head to the last of the three substitute ports we were given in lieu of Israel called Nafplion. We'll see If this place is ... read more

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ws6kaH0EDUw The positive side of life in our region. Israelis and Palestinians both are fighting for their right to self-determination and security. The constant fear of an imminent outbreak of fighting, children sleeping in safe shelters, parents unable to work and support their families, and fearing for the safety of friends and loved ones has been a way of life in this region for decades. Hopefully, this current round of talks will produce movement toward peace. I was honored to be chosen by The Focolare, the largest Catholic outreach movement in the world to write an Israeli perspective on the recent fighting with Gaza. Below is the story: This current round of fighting in the south has been very depressing because of the fact that it had to happen. There has been no political way of ... read more

I turned sixty five in April. The once twenty minute walk to the cafe now takes thirty. It is more due to the fact that I almost always seem to forget something than physical conditioning. I forgot my ex- wife's birthday for the first time in March. It was on my calendar which I neglected to review. Beautiful young women like Alexa now seem like granddaughters of grade school age. My once healthy appetite for dining has greatly dissipated. Alexa tried to reassure me that things are not as ... read more

The upscale mall houses high-end clothing and jewelry stores. There are several restaurants, a beauty salon, and a pharmacy. The community Chabad center is located here as well. It is my spiritual home and favorite place to buy religious artifacts and home décor. The Rabbi is named Levi. He is about thirty, razor thin, with dark hair, and smiles consistently. He has six children ranging from in age from six months to seven years. My favorite is his six month year old daughter Devorah which means "bee" in English. She already beams her father’s smile. I visit the store almost daily in the hope tha... read more

I immigrated to Israel at the age of fifty nine alone as well. She is from California. My home was in Colorado. Below Sharon tells her story. My dear husband died a few years ago. I was desolate. The loneliness was overwhelming. I missed him terribly. For many years I struggled to regain my balance, and then I decided to move to Israel, to live near my daughter and family. They made aliyah or immigration to eretz Israel fifteen years ago. I remember my flight to Israel, peering out of the airplane window, viewing the outline ... read more

Middle East » Israel » Haifa District » Akko October 7th 2012

Today was my first full day in Israel, a country I have never been to before. I woke up early and heard birds singing in the trees outside my window. I walked to the train station and used the limited number of English signs to figure out how to buy myself a ticket to the port city of Akko (also known as Acre). I spent the day walking around the old part of town. There is a large complex of rooms from an old Crusader citadel that has been excavated in recent years. It was interesting to me to walk in the footsteps of Richard Lionhearted, among others. I also enjoyed wandering the back streets of Akko and observing all the exotic food and spices for sale. It is hot here, but fortunately not as hot ... read more

Middle East » Israel » Haifa District » Binyamina October 6th 2012

My wi-fi connection is tenuous here in Binyamina, Israel, so I am not able to dictate, as I usually do. Therefore I will write a short blog today. There is not much to say about the day anyway because it was a traveling day. I left Heathrow bright and early this morning and had a stopover in Paris Charles DeGaulle Airport. We were delayed taking off because, reportedly, one passenger refused to submit to security screening and finally the plane left without him. Getting through passport control and customs at Tel Aviv airport was much easier than I expected. Despite what I had heard and read about the in-depth Israeli questioning, it turned out to be less intrusive than when I entered the UK. I took a taxi to the B&B where I am staying in ... read more

Middle East » Israel » Haifa District »  Caesaria July 3rd 2012

At about 9 AM on the 3rd of July we boarded a bus headed north. Most of us didn't know where we were headed, and seeing as we all woke up pretty early, we probably didn't care too much and we just wanted to sleep on the bus. Our destination? Caesarea, Israel. We started our journey by heading to a beach in Caesarea, where we first saw the Roman aquaducts led by our friendly tour guide Shimon. It was amazing to see so much history in one structure, but we'd be shocked to find out that wasn't all. We headed to the ruins of what used to be a port build by King Herod for his master, Augustus Caesar. There we were given presentations on how the area was being restored, how it used to look ... read more

where can I start except to say spectacular! such a different place and so memorable. Our guide picked us up at 9am, we headed to Nazareth, then on to the Sea of Galilee. We went to lots and lots of places where events such as the sermon on the mount were held. The landscape was amazing. From there we decided that we'd like to head to the dead sea to swim, a 2 hour drive but it was really worth it, a huge highlight for the kids. On the way we crossed into Jordan, Palestine and no-mans land - still full of landmines. We drove through the desert and the temperatures skyrocketed. We saw the recently opened Baptismal site in no mans land. The landscape looking into Jordan was just amazing, none of my photos do ... read more

May 10, 2012 Haifa/Jerusalem Haifa is a beautiful little city built on a small peninsula in northern Israel. It has a busy port and is known for the large number of high tech/computer companies doing business here. One of the first things I noticed was a small passenger ship tied up next to the military side of the port. I recognized it as a Turkish vessel that was in the news recently when it was attacked by the Israeli navy when it attempted to break the blockade of Gaza to the south though no one has pointed this out. I was soon to find out that there are many things in Israel that are not talked or scrupulously ignored even when in plain sight. Today we took a long bus ride to visit Jerusalem. We stopped ... read more
