Sorry about the last entry... I thought I'd posted it last Friday, but it turns out that I didn't.. oops! The Swedish people here at work like to discuss the differences in our languages... In our conversations, I've come across a few words that seem to be lacking in Canadian english (or at least as far as I can tell)... I've decided to incorporate them into my vocabulary: 1) spinky - they thought this was an english word! It means someone who is super thin. 2) tränningsvark - a single word to express the muscle pain you feel the day after exercising (when you're out of shape) - I told them we didn't have a word for this cuz us Canadians are all in excellent shape. (haha) 3) canon - said like canoon... means excellent or ... read more

I’ll take a Big Mac and a Mc Room with a view. Staying at a McDonald’s Hotel in Switzerland? That’s right… our hotel has a McDonalds theme. Sounds cheesy (pun intended) but it’s really a great place. The hotel’s actual name is The Park Inn. It’s very near the airport, yet quiet and serene,. Although you can watch the flights coming and going from our windows. It’s not at all what you might expect; the rooms are immaculate. (no greasy residue) The hotel and adjoining McDonalds have a high tech, modern design. The family rooms include separate, interestingly decorated bedrooms, each with it’s own TV. There’s even a circular shower is in the middle of the room! We plan to return since we’re going to use Zurich as a hub for our travels because of ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Amalfi July 6th 2005

Today was our second full day on the Amalfi coast. Yesterday we stayed here in Positano and went down to the beach. We rented some lounge chairs, you have to here, since the beaches are all rocks. The weather was really nice, the sun was hot but the water was nice and refreshing. We had lunch down at the beach restaurant, I think the waiter wanted to go home with us. Unfortunately, he was not the hot waiter from Monterossa, but rather a 70 year-old man, not quite the Italian guy we had in mind. There was also a rather old man in a very tiny speedo on the chair next to us, not pleasant, but very common here. After the beach, we walked back up to our room, which, despite the hills is not actually ... read more

Weve driven down to the coast of France and back up to the Alantic to spain and San Sebasttion. Then through the middle of Spain to Lisbon in Portugal. There have been a thousand cool things that have happened. Weve had a few miss haps with the van. Bumper fell off, window wipers blew up. We over heated 5 tims in one day going over the alps. The starter motor went on me for a few days and the re vision mirror fell of. Aart from that shes still held togther with Duck tape and running fine. All of the above have been fixed or ... read more

After a hectic couple of days in Naples, we really needed a break so decided to take the hydrofoil directly to Sorrento and hopefully spend a few days at the beach. The weather was still as hot as it gets, the only way we've been surviving is with a siesta in the afternoon. Sorrento is a small resort town jammed halfway up a cliff about an hour's ferry ride or an hour and a half's train ride from Naples. The town itself was a very tourist oriented town, expensive stores, restaurants advertising the 'menu touristico' and generally not a lot of Italian being spoken. We were staying in a cabin at a campground about 10 minutes walk outside the town, so were just close enough to make trips in to town easily but far enough away ... read more

Egg #2 says: Thought I'd better write a bit about us Eggs to set our travel scene.... For about the last year, we've been getting our act together & making plans to leave the rat race, and seek fun and sunshine in countries that we've not yet visited. Two months ago, we both handed our notice in at work, rented out our house 30 miles south of Edinburgh (a seaside commuter town called Dunbar) and moved into a teeny flat in a central area of Edinburgh called Leith. We now have just over 8 weeks to go until we fly out to Bangkok to begin our adventures. Its amazing how much preparation is involved in organising your life to have a break for a year. When you first decide to take the plunge, you tend to ... read more

Graeme here, well we arrived in Budapest in the afternoon on July 2nd. After a lengthy couple of bus rides we arrived at some sketchy hostel but splurged for a private room so it wasnt too bad. Bupapest is apparently called the Paris of the East and rightfully so - its well groomed, for Eastern standards and has amazing architecture. The city is divided by the massive Danube river. Buda, consisting of green hills and old churches and palaces, lies to the west of the river. Pest lies on the East side, where you find most of the city. Together they form Budapest. We had to use the "Forint" since Hungary doesnt use the Euro. It wasnt THAT cheap to come here. A Big Mac meal costs 3.50 Euro or 5.25 CAD. Budapest is pretty modern ... read more

Hi there, back again to tell you about Vienna! Well, we arrived on a beautiful sunny day and walked into our hostel room only to see the two guys who we had befriended in Interlaken, Switzerland sitting there! It was absolutely bizzare! Great though since it then started to rain - and did not stop until we left 2 days later. So we basically went to the supermarket and made food in the hostel kitchen and played cards all night with them. The next day Graeme and I attempted to see some of Vienna's sights but the strong wind and rain sent us back to the hostel early. That night we hunted down some other Canadians and celebrated Canada Day. It was great, although we were a little sad to have missed the Salmon Festival of ... read more

Hi there everyone! Sorry it's been so long since our last entry, we've been a little lazy with it lately. Just so you know, pictures will be coming soon - we're having a hard time finding a place that will let us upload them. Ok! We left off last in Berlin (with Batman). Next we headed down to Munich where we stayed in the most god-awful hostel ever! It felt like a prison! I won't give disgusting details but the worst part was the construction at 7:30 am every morning! They were drilling directly over our heads! I don't think I slept for 3 days! Aside from that, Munich was great, extremely beautiful - but more expensive than Berlin. I guess that's the price you pay for a more aesthetically pleasing city. Graeme and I spent ... read more
