I got back from the Lake District of Northern England late on Sunday night after a dreadful 7 hour coach ride. We began our trip at 6:45am on Friday the 14th. We left Enfield (Katie, Stephanie, and still drunken me) at 6:45 am. Yes, I was up only because Katie called and got me up. When I left I couldn’t find my keys to my dorm but being still completely pissed I just left without them. We ventured by the overground rail to the underground to Nottinghill gate to get on a coach bus for 7 hours to head to Keswick (Cumbria) where we would be residing at GlaraMara Mountain. The drive to Glaramara was actually quite astounding. The country part of England is very beautiful. The rolling hills, green grass, grazing cattle and sheep, and ... read more

What the! Dad?! Your meant to back home not in Manchester! He had decided to come and meet us at the train station (great grey cell work to get the timing) and surprise us, and he did! So we all caught the train to a little town called Parbold in between Manchester & Liverpool. We stayed with one of mum & dad’s friend’s Mary (really great lady). Mary was so good she took us on tours of the surrounding areas, to Wigan pier & museum, the Liverpool docks, to meet friends that took us on hikes around the country side & out to dinner parties at her friends and families houses, all top people. Then it was time to say bye to mum, I had such a top time travelling with you Terry, thank you so ... read more

What to say about Wednesday..... I had a non-US foreign policy class this morning which was nice. Today's contemporary lecture was on communist world systems starting with the Soviet Union, of course. It was a really interesting lecture, more cultural history than data or political/social history--I think I fit in the cultural history framework better than the political, although social isn't too bad. Lecture was the only real thing that occurred in the morning. After lecture I went home to eat lunch, quickly, before frisbee practice at 2pm. Practice today was good although there are some people who continue to come out, which is really awesome, except that they still haven't grasped how to throw a disc correctly and arrive at practice in jeans and a jumper. It's a bit insane and at some point I ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London October 18th 2005

I guess it’s a good way to see the different parts of London, but aside from that, the world of a temp isn’t too glamorous. Once we had managed to find a house, the next on the to-do list was to find an income. Our Aussie dollars were only going to get us so far, and the lack of income was starting to cause us both concern. London is such an easy place to spend money; however, it’s a bit harder making it come back to you. I registered with a few recruitment agencies, all of whom told me I should think about accepting a lower rate than I has suggested I would like to receive (dirty rotten scoundrels that they are) and the following Monday, I began hitting the streets. My first placement was with ... read more

So I got to London on the 18th of October (if my memory serves me correctly). It was a long and slightly scary flight, leaving everything behind in Canada. When I was in London I stayed in a house in Brent. It was a gift from God that I was able to stay there because I don’t think I would have been able to afford to stay in London for as long as I did other wise. London was an interesting place. I was told so many things before I left about different things (some were true and some not true) but I think it depends on how long you stay there and how much money you have to the experience you will have. I was in 'must find job and settle' mode so I was ... read more

Substitute teachers have never had any real control over students. We fill our days with empty promises and threats. Any logical group of students will know that: A) Students always have power in numbers B) Students are young and probably full of sugar and ridallin. No actions taken on behalf of students will result in long term consequences, especially under the supervision of a temporary teacher. C) Substitute teacher's will not follow through with any threat of consequences. They want to go home at 3:30. They don't want the staff at the school to think they are a bad teacher. They will avoid contact with school office. Once these 3 things are realized, chaos ensues. Yesterday my students realized all three of these things. I was spit on, had to restrain a student, was told to ... read more

Tuesday brings a late class about Anglo-Saxon England which was quite interesting but a boring topic to relate at the moment. However, I do have a presentation for that class coming up really soon!!! After class I didn't do much which usually means that I attempted homework but most likely became sidetracked. That night though, I tagged along to a U21 international social with Leslie, Judy and Taylor. I knew a large group of who was there which was pretty cool. The social mainly consisted of Australians and Canadians or those that were headed to or just returned from Australia and Canada. It was pretty interesting. After the social we went to The Ark for more socializing but were pretty tired so we went home pretty quick. The highlight though was watching those that got a ... read more
