This is a continuation of my previous post . Several months ago Adele, my travel buddy, and I hatched a plan to recreate last year's road trip around Iceland, but this time around the highlands of Scotland. Coming from Tucson, Adele is attracted to cool climates. In two months, she'll be spending the night on an Antarctic ice shelf (without me, thankfully). But there was another reason. After the war, Adele's father spent time in Inverness. He was so enchanted by it that he named his farm back home Inverness. It became a long-standing ambition for Adele to visit the place that inspired her father. (We did end up spending a few nights in Inverness. It had its charms, but in 2022 it's just another mid-size city filled with cars and kebob stands.) The day after ... read more

Tuesday 12 July 2022, Day 8 on the West Highland Way (WHW) Bridge of Orchy to Kingshouse Hotel, Glencoe. 12.5 miles by Garmin, 1601 elevation gain by All Trails, 5 hours 30 minutes walking. This is our fastest rate of walking on the Way. The accommodations at the Bridge of Orchy Hotel were new, small, modern rooms that have recently been added outside the main hotel in the photos. In Scotland there is no cooling, only heating of rooms. So on a relatively warm day there is no cooling air circulating in the rooms. Opening the windows runs the risk of midges. Plus we have to remove the inside of the duvet and sleep only under the cover. In spite of this we both had a good night's sleep. We had our breakfast at 0730 and ... read more

Today our journey to the Bonnie Bonnie banks of Loch Lomond begins with an unusual sight, the sun. This is the first morning where old Sol decided to grace us with his presence. The green of Scotland is magnificent under sunny skies. A word about Tour Director. Imaging doing a job where you play mother to 30 people you have never met, all of whom have some preconceived notions about travel, food, vacation, accommodations, and needs. Imagine also, that you are on call 24 hours a day, have to plan each days activities, and make sure everyone is safe, happy, and on time. This is just a small concept of the Tour Director’s job. No matter what tour company you use, the Tour Director is critical to the quality and enjoying your tour. To add insult ... read more

Today we went on a 12 hour Loch Ness and the Highlands tour! The tour was set to be from 8am-8pm, the longest bus day tour in Europe, but we ended up arriving back in Edinburgh at 9:30pm. Among other places, we visited Ben Nevis, Glen Coe, Fort Augustus (where we hung out with the Loch Ness monster) and Fort William. We travelled 600km, but it didn’t feel like it because we had a hilarious tour guide (one thing I’ve noticed about Scottish people is they’ve all got the best sense of humour). Here’s a few things we learnt from him- 1- The kilt is called a kilt because the last person who called it a skirt was killed 2- it’s fine to put a bit of water in your whiskey, but under no circumstances should ... read more

Thursday 14 June 2018 Travelled to Fort William to catch train down to Milngavie, Glasgow to start the walk. Was really blustery but sunny and a few showers. A bit chilly - only a miserly 10* but the beauty of the place made up for it. Refuelled at Wetherspoons & then did a bit of shopping for those inevitable last minute/forgotten items! Michelle decided to buy herself a new pair of walking boots - wtf, on the eve of the walk?! ?‍♀️ This could be a disaster! Caught train and settled back to enjoy a relaxing and very scenic journey and we weren’t disappointed! An hour into the journey the enormity of the walk back suddenly hit me, and I felt quite overwhelmed. It passed tho & after another glass of wine, enthusiasm & determination quickly ... read more

The beautiful pictures of isle of skye, way out in outer hebrides were awesome. It is one of the most picturesque islands of Scotland. Scotland is called Switzerland without the Sun! When I got an invitation to spend Easter weekend with my cousin and his wife in Scotland, I did a high jump. I finished my work early and took the 6:30 pm train to Glasgow. London underground and train station was chocoblock. Most were young travellers who were going to Lake district for the long weekend and there were not enough unreserved seats. I observed how passengers read, knitted or stood silently lost in their own thoughts. Some listened to music. Others got cozy with their significant others. There was a black man with whom I chatted on the condition of British railways. They were ... read more

I am writing on April 19 in Paris with a glass of red next to me...but before we get to the European leg of the trip, lets take a trip up a mountain and quick sojourn into Dublin. On Saturday 15th we drove through the picturesque Loch Lomond district, and into the highlands, watching the temparature display in the car drop every 15 minutes or so. By the time we got to Glencoe, it was 3 degrees - BRRR! Glad we brought leggings to wear under our jeans.. Glencoe is one of the highest mountains in Scotland, and has a chairlift which takes you about half way up. Ahead of us were some insane people who went up he chairlifts with their bikes, so they could ride their way down..ummm, not for me thanks...half way up ... read more

Many people have bucket lists of places or things you want to see or do before you die and we are no different. For Gretchen, the Isle of Iona has been up on her list for some time and we were sorry we didn’t make it to the tiny island 4 years ago. Like yesterday we had two options of roads to get to the ferry that takes you across from Fionnphort on a 5 minute ride. We could take the A849 which was the principal road that travelled back towards Loch Linnhe and then down the middle of Mull or we could take the more circuitous route around the western coastline from Tobermory. The second option was a skinny red road as marked on the atlas although that often didn’t mean it was any narrower ... read more

Geo: 56.8784, -4.45832Well id heard alot about the Highlands before I came to Scotland. Everyone insisted it was very much worthwhile, and really beautiful to see. I believed them, but I was still taken away by how cool the Highlands beyond Glencoe were. The road weaved in and out of a valley, with towering mountains on either side. the valley was full of streams, and scattered with stones and marshlands. A cool wind whipped throughout, and there was a really old, somewhat unsettling feel about the area, it was fantastic. A similar style feel to that of Stonehenge. Amidst the rain and winds, took a slight hike around. Felt like I could have stayed there for hours!... read more
