Day 7: KINLOCHLEVEN TO FORT WILLIAM 15 miles (actual 16.47 miles) Decided to have a cooked breakfast as it’s our last day walking and I haven’t had one all week. Got chatting to a NZ couple who are touring Europe & will end up in London as their first grandchild due to be born there in a couple of weeks. The B&B owner joined in chat & told us where to get best views of Loch Leven on way out of Kinlochleven. Said it was only another climb of approx 10 metres & a short detour, but it would be worth it for views as you don’t get the same unobstructed views from the WHW path. I thanked him but made mental note that we would not be taking any such detours unless we were 110% ... read more

Glencoe to Kinlochleven 9 miles The cafe did not open until 9am so not early start today. We had a bacon roll & toast & tea before setting off. Only 9 miles today so we thought there was no desperate rush to set off & eventually left about 9.45. First part of the walk from the Glencoe mountain resort took us behind the Kingshouse hotel which is currently closed for refurb. Refurb? Practically a whole new hotel being built! A huge extension underway but nowhere near finished. Would love to go back next year to see the finished building - might just do that. Highlight of the day - 5/6 deer grazing by roadside did not seem at all bothered by our presence & walked along side us & crossed path in front of us giving ... read more

Day 5 - Tynedrum to Glencoe, the longest walk on the itinerary, 18.5 miles. I’d been dreading this one, not because of the distance, but more how my body would stand up to it after 4 days of walking over difficult terrain. I knew how thankful I was to reach our destination on all of the previous days so could,t imagine having to walk a further 5.5 miles to get there today. We decided to make an early start & got up at 6am. We’d bought softies to toast and no tea available so water it was. Tea makes you pee anyway so as there would be no toilets en route today better to limit the amount of al fresco toilet stops! Got my softie into toaster then starting fiddling with my phone & power pack. ... read more

Inverarnan - Tyndrum 13.5 miles (15.1 actual) After a really poor night sleep -was awake from 4-6am, I was really reluctant to get up. Just wanted to stay in my bed. However, remembering how long the walk took us yesterday, I thought I’d better get going! Was still full up from last nights meal so breakfast just wasn’t very appealing this early, however knowing I had a full days walking ahead I tried to force down a bacon butty - fail! Most unusual for me! Set off about 8.50 - later than planned, but thankfully terrain/ path much better than yesterday. Much more open too - was getting really fed up with jungle view on previous days, so the open country side with views of the hills, and a better and wider path was really welcome! ... read more

Day 3 - Sunday 17/06/18; Rowardennan to Inverarnan - 13.5 miles ( 15.12 actual) Felt a wee bit stiff when I first got up but soon wore off - Michelle on the other hand was saying ouch the minute her feet touched the floor! Had breakfast about 8 then set off about 8.40. Spent about 15 mins trying to shut the case - hope the zip doesn’t burst & hope Ginger Routes employ strong drivers! ? Soon became apparent the walk was going to be a tough one. Walking alongside Loch Lomond, one minute we were high up looking down on the water, then a few minutes later we were practically walking on the shoreline., and so it continued - sharp ascents followed by steep descents. Tree roots, big boulders, small waterways with stepping stones & ... read more

Day 2; Drymen to Rowardennan, 13.5 (15.10 actual) Got up about 7 & delighted to see it was dry outside - but by time we had breakfast & got ready the rain came on. Walked a mile to rejoin WHW track & by that time was raining really heavily. Decided to take take the “alternative” route into Balmaha and avoid climbing Conic Hill. Described as a “strenuous” climb, we figured the exertion not worth it seeing as there would be zero view from top. Much the same height as Bin Hill - 323m. The first views of Loch Lomond were still breathtaking, even seen through a veil of mist & rain. I really enjoyed the parts of the walk which ran alongside the loch, however, a good % of the walk was through wooded areas with ... read more

Friday 15 June 2018 - 12 miles (13.41 actual); Awoke at 7am to ominously dark room - was expecting torrential rain when I opened curtains but no just blackout curtains! Dark skies but no rain as was forecast! After a nice continental breakfast & a couple of muffins smuggled out for later, we happily abandoned our monstrous suitcase to the care of Ginger Routes & made our way to official start point of the walk. The first few miles were dry then we had a couple of showers - nothing too heavy, mainly drizzle but enough to keep my hood up to avoid the dreaded hair frizz. Stopped after 7 miles at lovely cafe/restaurant, Beech Tree, for much needed pee & scone! This place must be mobbed in summertime - fantastic place & so accommodating for ... read more

Thursday 14 June 2018 Travelled to Fort William to catch train down to Milngavie, Glasgow to start the walk. Was really blustery but sunny and a few showers. A bit chilly - only a miserly 10* but the beauty of the place made up for it. Refuelled at Wetherspoons & then did a bit of shopping for those inevitable last minute/forgotten items! Michelle decided to buy herself a new pair of walking boots - wtf, on the eve of the walk?! ?‍♀️ This could be a disaster! Caught train and settled back to enjoy a relaxing and very scenic journey and we weren’t disappointed! An hour into the journey the enormity of the walk back suddenly hit me, and I felt quite overwhelmed. It passed tho & after another glass of wine, enthusiasm & determination quickly ... read more
