Written on 17th July 2011 - Just one week after the decision was made. So Why? Why give up my flat and sell all of my possessions to buy a motorbike and travel?? Quite a good question that one. For years now I have worked so so hard to get to where I am. I have a responsible job, a degree and most of the material objects that i need to make life a little easier. The one thing I don't have is the joy and zest for life that I used to have......... the desire, the drive, the focus. The past year has been a difficult one. In June 2010 My Mum was diagnosed with Cancer at the extremely young age of 58. In September 2010 I made the decision that my Mum needed me ... read more

Don't you hate it when you have dirty fingernails? There's something about the dirt that lies in the nail bed, its not clean dirt, not by any means, its the dirtiest of dirt, filthy even and it's under your nails. Its not a nice feeling, to have dirt under you nails. However it is a really great feeling to know that you have the freedom to travel. It is also a really great feeling when you know that your destination is somewhere you've always known you'd go, no matter what. The best part? I was going there with my parents, yep mum and dad were coming too. We were off to Scotland, and how excited I was. Scotland, as it seems most other places, had always been on my list. Whether it was because of the ... read more

Then the rain came - the latter part of October (in fact most of October) was Wet!. Despite our best efforts work on the garden ground to a halt and I, for one, contemplated using the raised beds as paddy fields. Rachel moved in until her own place (West Byre) is finished - hopefully by the end of the month. Wrote the above at the end of October now 7th December, having a small party tonoght to celebrate our wedding anniversary (20 years!). Meant to get away for a few days but on the way south yesterday hit gridlock at Stirling - the who;e of the central belt was at a virtual standstill because of snow. We eventually managed to turn and came home. Roads around here not to bad. Incredible weather with over a foot ... read more

Yoksi ajoin takaisin Dundeehen. Kavin katsomassa kaupunkia maen paalta, Dundee Law, ja poikkesin viela keskustassa jalkiruualla. Auton sai illalla parkkiin helposti. Monday 9th August 2010 in Inver Campsite just outside of Dunkeld Well, this morning started off raining and that stopped Gaye from going for a bicycle ride. Tom still went for about 1 hour. Went for a walk into Birnam, the Community Arts Centre and had a look at The Beatrix Potter centre. This is where she spent summer holidays between 1871 and 1881. From here she wrote her picture letter to her friend which was the basis of ‘Peter Rabbit’. We had a look at the local art exhibition. After that, we went into Dunkeld and had look around and had late lunch at the pub. After lunch we walked 5kms up to Loch Lowes with Gaye hanging on to my backpack on steeper sections and had a look at the Osprey viewing and chatted ... read more

The weather meant we would soon be moving out of Scotland and back into England. The sun followed by rain followed by sun meant the midges were out in force making it impossible to have even the windows open. This is not pleasant in a metal box. Today we travelled to a local farm to try and solve their Maize Maze. It was quite a humid day and being surrounded by six foot maize did nothing to help this. The idea was that on our way around we should come across boards with pictures of animals on. With each animal was a stamp and to complete the maze correctly we had to collect all 8 stamps. This was easier said than done. As we got more and more lost and found no animals tensions rose. It ... read more

Loch Earn is a place that Andy can remember coming to as a child to fish from a jetty. When we reached the jetty we noticed that it had deteriorated somewhat but I suppose the same could be said of Andy in the thirty years since he had last visited. Driving around the loch it was obvious that there were plenty of fish. Every available spot was taken. Hundreds of tents and caravans were pitched loch side for a spot of wild camping. This is quite common in Scotland. On many of our trips out we have noticed tents pitched in woodlands with people sat around campfires. Maybe we will give this a try when we return. Later in the day we visited Stirling. On our arrival we were greeted by boarded up houses and abandoned ... read more

Having seen a few reviews on the internet for Callander’s chippy it would have been rude not to give it a go. Opinion was divided. The fish and chips fell somewhere between acceptable and the best ever - and the service somewhere between barely acceptable and perfect - and quite often the review would be mixed, with exceptional food and unexceptional service or vice versa. I was pleased so see that the chips were cooked in animal fat. This was something that our local chippy had always done and the taste was way beyond anything vegetable oil could produce. I was also happy when I entered the shop to see unusual and locally sustainable alternative catches available alongside the normal cod, Haddock etc.. I ordered one Megrim and one Haddock (needing to do a taste comparison), ... read more
