On Thursday we decided to walk to Backlinn Falls. We walked the mile into town and bought an ice-cream- obviously to give us vital energy for the day ahead :o). We then turned off the main road and started our 1.5 mile uphill trek. Once at the top we had a short walk through the woods and soon came across the Falls. The water cascaded over a succession of rocky ledges and into the clear pool below. There was once a bridge over the gorge but unfortunately this and 6 other bridges over the same river were washed away in a storm in 2006. Even though this meant that we could not continue our walk it was interesting to see the new bridge being built, which once completed will be stunning. Further up the falls it ... read more

After driving through the strangely named Kilmahog, we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived at our site in Callander. Having had to book something at the last minute we were not expecting that much. Our pitch had its own water supply. This may seem like a strange thing to get excited about to those of you living in houses with running water. But believe me, when living in a caravan, its things like this that make it easier. After setting up we drove into town and had a wander around the many shops. It was good to be close to so many amenities after our daily tips to Inverness. Town was still about a mile away from the site so the site was still nice and quiet. We found plenty of pubs, shops selling shortbread and ... read more

We had planned to walk into the village and check out the other local pubs during our stay but it started to rain after a few days and it did not stop for the duration of our stay. We spent the rest of our time taking trips out in the car. We drove to Dundee and quite quickly drove back out again, only stopping briefly to take advantage of the glasses offer at Asda. Andy got himself two pairs of prescription sunglasses for £100 all in. If you have an Asda optician local to you take advantage of the offer until mid August - £45 a pair for designer frames with thinner lenses, anti scratch and anti glare. You could become the owner of a rather feminine pair of shades just as Andy now is - ... read more

We woke on day two with slightly sore heads. What we craved was a good ole Sunday lunch. It took me some time but I finally convinced Andy that we could create this on the cooking appliances we had. We decided that a joint of meat was probably a bit too ambitious so settled on lamb chops instead. I have to say that with a BBQ and a microwave it is possible to knock up a lovely Sunday lunch, although our neighbours looked at us rather strangely when we lifted the lid on our BBQ to reveal Yorkshire puddings! Later that day some new arrivals picked the pitch opposite us. We watched in amazement as they spent the next few hours erecting 4 massive tents and a gazebo linking them all together until they had something ... read more

Well at last the weather was kind to us so we upped sticks and made our way to bonnie Scotland. We thought that our welcome was a little grand for two people towing a caravan in a Rover, but it turned out that the welcome was not just for us. it would seem that they like to make a big deal of crossing the border and employ a man in traditional dress to play the bagpipes as you cross. A fair few miles over the boarder we arrived at our destination, a pleasant site a few miles from Blairgowrie . The nearest village was a few miles away but there was a pub on the entrance to the site so we were pleased not to have to walk too far for a drink. Once we had ... read more

Well midsummer has come and gone - for once the weather held up and so lots of people came. There was music, fires, food and drink etc and I think a good night was had by all, including the bunch of young German lads who'd heard about it in Killin and came along to investigate. They seemed to get into the swi(n)g of things and had a night to remember. Meantime work progresses outside. The main patio is finished, we've had lettuce, huge cabbages and lots of potatoes from the garden and have planted flowers round the patio/terrace and some hedging, which the horses have tried to eat. Very few words to cover hours of labour digging over the garden and removing literally tons of stone/rock and countless dockens, nettles, thistles buttercups, couch grass etc. We ... read more

Day 31 Blair Atholl to Newtonmore 38miles 993 miles A dull and damp start with a blustery wind, but the rain had stopped at least. Before breakfast went for a short ride up to Old Blair bridge where there were good views of dippers on the river and red squirrels in the trees. Coming back on an estate road of Blair castle, I stopped and watched an osprey carrying a fish back to its nest. Near the entrance to the castle I stopped to admire some highland beasties with particularly fine horns. After a fine breakfast in my very comfortable lodgings I set forth on the gentle climb up Glen Garry. All the way up to the Drumochter pass and beyond the NCN 7 uses the old A9, much of which is traffic free and ... read more

The answer according to the song is "another day older and deeper in debt". However although the deeper in debt doesn't apply digging rocks out of ones new garden certainly lets you know that your body aint as youing as it once was. I don't know if we've excavated 16 tons of rock quite yet but by the end of the day my back feels as if we have. The main project at the moment is getting our garden together while awaiting the stone for the patio/veranda (due next week all 100 sq mtrs of it). Progress is slow mainmly due to the abundance of stones and the effort required to extract and remove them. We have managed to get a small part of the garden planted (lettuce, peas, cabbages, onions and potatoes plus the first ... read more
