Nothing to do with the diggers and levellers of history and a lot to do with JCBs wielded by a man with artistry in his soul. The digger came back and built up a terrace along the front of the house and then shaped the garden, including building a wall to hold the terrace in place, with a broad path along the bottom of the terrace. Then the hill at the bottom of the garden, which was actually all the top soil from the site was levelled, and spread over the garden. Willy is now digging it over by hand and removing the large boulders which were inadvertently hidden in the topsoil. He's probably overdoing it and is full of aches and pains... everyone say "aah!". ... read more

So its goodbye to 2009 and welcome 2010. Like the rest of the UK the weather has been the main event of late. We haven't had the volumes of snow suffered by most of the UK. In fact since the first snows, a week or so before Christmas, we've escaped with no more than the occasional light shower. The roads between here and civilisation have been kept clear but access to the farmyard has been impossible other than by 4x4. So all other vehicles are left at the road end. We're still without our own car which still in the garage while Peter, the mechanic, tries to source a replacement fuel pump (either reconditioned or from a scappy). Meantime we've the use of an old (N reg) Peugeot 105. Hogmanay was a bit quiet as Tombreck ... read more

We're well into our first winter in the straw bail house (or at least I hope we're well into winter as Spring seems far away). So far so good, although the huge expanse of space in the centre of the house seems to take a lot of heating. Really we're just taking this opportunity to say Merry Christmas, wish you all the best for 2010, post some more photos and say thanks again. The house has turned into a warm, welcoming home and we couldn't have done it without you. If you are in the area do drop in. Merry Christmas and a Guid New Year from Willy and Wendy... read more

So... where was I? Leaving Edinburgh in the afternoon, we jumped on a bus and headed for Pitlochry to meet Sarah, one of my friends from way back in Airlie Beach in 2004. We arrived after an absolutely magical bus ride, the scenery so beautiful with all the reds and yellows of Autumn coating the countryside. Sares was excited to see us, and shovelled us off home to me her parents, Sandra and David. They are such a wonderful family, and live in a beautiful home amongst a bunch of family owned chalet lodgings that they rent out to travellers. It was great to see Sares again, and we stayed up yakking until 1:30am. The next day we had a big tour planned with Sarah behind the wheel of her little Vauxhall Corsa: she was driving ... read more

I know our last entry was supposedly the final one but this blogging thing becomes addictive. Not a lot of change since our last entry, but lots of little things - we sold our other house and over a hectic week in late August moved our bits and bobs here so that it now feels like home. The tempo has dropped dramatically and I find that I can spend a couple of hours just looking out the window watching the changing light on the loch and hills, the changing colours of the leaves and the local birdlife. We've said goodbye to the martins so no more aerial displays each morning and evening. Socially things seem to be winding down for the winter, although there was another good party complete with spectacular bonfire last weekend for Ben's ... read more

We've now come more or less to the end of the build. Several quotations come to mind but I'll restrict myself to - "what a long strange trip it's been". We started this a long time ago, seems like another lifetime and at last the end of the tunnel is definitely there. We had another housewarming come Golden Wedding celebration for Wendy's parents (plus family and a few friends (27 in all)) last weekend, the house again proving a pleasant venue for social soirees. The house itself is now down to finishing touches - painting and tiling, selection of fittings (spent an hour yesterday looking at curtains). I've added a few photos but this is really to thank everyone involved - without your help we wouldn't have got there,... read more

This week was a "wow" week - Keith finished putting in the window cills and suddenly the house has taken a further leap from building site to house. The matter of colour schemes is getting out of hand, as we don't like the same colours, and now have about 7 different samples on the wall of the wee back bedroom - and we've rejected all of them. We have almost finished the bathroom - have a look at the pohoto, which cunningly disguises the fact that we only had a sample pot of the burgundy paint on the wall above the bath and that we ran out of tiles just beyond the washbasin. So there's a bit of tiling and a bit of painting to do - then we have one room totallly finished. Willy's been ... read more
