On Sunday, June 21st I went with two friends to go on a canyoning adventure. I didn't have much of an idea of what canyoning was, but when my friend showed me what it entailed I just couldn't pass it up. Canyoning has a little bit of everything, from rock climbing, cliff jumping, rappelling down waterfalls, and even sliding down waterfalls. We went through a company called Nae Limits based out of Pitlochry and the guides we had were awesome. The gear we used included a climbing harness, three layers of wetsuits, and a helmet. When we got to the canyoning sight, it felt like I had just taken a bus and ended up in Colorado or Montana. The scenery was not what I had in mind when I pictured Scotland, with cascading waterfalls and towering ... read more

Geo: 56.4677, -4.31806Novelty of snow and consequent runny noses is wearing off!! We set off in the sunshine to Culney Gardens to find some red squirrels. It didn't take us long to spot them as one pretty much ran up to the car on arrival! The garden was beautiful. Lots of spring flowers beginning to pop through. There is a lovely walk through the woodland gardens that became a little hazardous in unexpected heavy snow! Once back in the warm, dry car, we were reluctant to head out into the unknown weather conditions again so we drove along Loch Tay to Kilin and back. The Dochart Falls in Killin made for a dramatic stop off. The drive was stunning. Isaac is constantly informing us that there are 'MORE baas!'... read more

Geo: 56.7051, -3.73307We woke up to snow! Scotland is very much living up to its 4 seasons in a day reputation! We headed to Pitlochry today but were all rather tired and windswept so we only bothered to leave the warmth of the car to see The Queen's View. Worth the effort!... read more

Geo: 56.6117, -3.86593We arrived at our cottage, Croftness Bothy exhausted and ready for Saturday night tv by the log burner. Some little body had other ideas though and proceeded with mission demolition and danger through every nook and cranny of the cottage. It made us realise just how 'Isaac proof' our own house has become and the prospect of a week with open planned living and no stair gates seemed almost infeasible. Luckily, the next day we became much fonder of our little cottage after it happily welcomed 3 generations of friends. We had a wonderful time together. Firstly meeting the landlord's daughters and their ponies and then walking to the Birks of Aberfeldy. The Birks are very understated and truly beautiful. Everybody managed the pleasant walk through the forest and thankfully there was more water ... read more

Day 8 - Fort William to Pitlochry Sorry guys but the hotel at Pitlochry was a bit dickey and we could not send out the blog. As a side note we are enjoying the Scottish TV shows, Pointless, Gogglebox & The Chase. The rain is still with us again today. Pictures become extremely challenging because for some reason the wind is always blowing from the direction that I want to point the camera. On this trip i have cleaned the lenses at least a dozen times per day. OK - out of Fort William after a breakfast of parritch with WHISKEY! GOD I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!! We are going to head thru some more rugged parts of the highlands. We did find some more rugged roads that are one lane, no guard rails, no straight sections ... read more

Geo: 56.1885, -3.96142After a long day and night of travel, we arrived in Glasgow after making stops and changing planes in Houston and changing airlines in London. Heathrow is huge, and we walked about two miles to get from the arrival gate, through customs and immigration, and on to the departure gate. I had arranged for a three-hour layover, so we had plenty of time to get through all the procedures required. We carried on all our luggage which let us skip the step of retrieving bags from United and rechecking them on British Air. In Glasgow, the rental car desk was easy to find and we eased into our BMW hatchback and took off for the thirty-mile drive to Stirling. As Philip was getting used to driving on the left again, I was looking for ... read more

A bit of a late and slow start today - so after breakfast we managed to break free of Edinburgh and cross the amazingly large Forth bridge and on the road to Perth. Our progress was a bit slow and was one of those days where again the views and scenery were good without taking you into another realm. By a busy road in a Scottish grave, a stranger lays Having enjoyed the quota of his days And when his time with us was all but spent I wonder if he wondered, where it all went Was he outgoing or shy? Did he have chance to say goodbye? For now he lays in a grave all alone And on top a chilling slab of stone Well these forlorn thoughts has made me think And I must do ... read more

Usually returning from a long trip means a return to normality, unless you live a rather less than conventional life that is! Luckily for us we left conventional behind us a good few years ago. Jet lag more or less behind us we headed up to Scotland to visit Trish's sister, our visit coinciding with her parents which meant a few days in a hotel. Booking in advance we got a good deal at the Travelodge Broxden Junction and our timing meant we had a chance to call into Hexham on the way up to see Russ's cousin plus a couple of friends we knew from when we worked in Pamplona. When we got to Perth the weather was glorious. Trish had dog walking responsibilities one day so we went up to the top of a ... read more
