Loch Ness day. A drive around Loch Ness, punctuated by hot chocolates, several photo stops and a picnic by the lake. All good and some brief periods of sunshine made it quite an enjoyable excursion. Loch Ness is certainly more atmospheric in the mist and rain and it takes on a more foreboding and eerie nature and one significantly more conducive to Nessie spotting but it was good to see it with the sun shining. The north side is considerably more popular and populated than the south. On the north side tourist coaches and pubs are common whilst on the south side the road is one lane with those 'passing places' sprinkled along its length. They are some delightful little villages on both sides but on the south side there are no tourist souvenir shops at ... read more

So you are probably thinking, why oh why have they renamed the trip. Well if you read day 1 of the blog you will understand and if you haven't you need to. To be honest it was Gill’s idea and it really was apt, so the road trip is now Adventure before Dementia. Remember day 2 started in Brian & Gill’s hotel car park. You can just imagine the hotel residents waking up to see 3 bleeding great big motor homes outside their windows. They were probably thinking the gipsy’s have arrived! in Grasmere! So in true camping style Gill arranges the kitchen of the hotel to make us bacon butties - nothing like slumming it on our road trip. The man from the garage comes to fix Chris and Katie’s motor home so now the ... read more

A week in Inverness. Sounds like I've won fifth prize in the local primary school raffle! But no, Inverness is quite a delightful place despite the very Scottish weather. It has rained every day for the last week but it only lasts a few minutes (but then again so does the sunshine!) which means it really hasn't stopped us doing anything or we have been a little wet but never soaked. I've walked the streets following the Inverness Town Walk which was really informative and really quite interesting. The Sanderson 'free walking' tours had finished the previous week and that probably would have been my preferred option but me as a 'tour guide' is only scary to others! Things appear to be closing down quite quickly now that Summer (?) is officially over. It hasn't impacted ... read more

Route 500. Wow! Five hundred miles of magnificent scener. But probably 400 miles of single lane roads! That's not a grumble but it does mean numerous pulling overs and a few reverses in order to traverse the distance safely. We drove the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland a couple of years back and this route is as good if not better. The scenery is spectacular and it is everywhere. Along the way our BnB places have been great and we have enjoyed the food and beers as much as we have anywhere. We drove to John O'Groats today, much to Lee's disappointment! I'm not sure what she expected but more than a signpost and a couple of icecream stores I'd reckon. Well 10 minutes later were off and heading south. We stopped at Dunrobin Castle which ... read more

That's the old teacher at the 'old schoolhouse'. You're looking at a tender, succulent and really quite unctuous beef cheek. Very nice dish and despite the fact we were both tired the meal went down very well. Can't afford to go back but it was good. In fact we've just eaten at the local pub and although you could have fired a cann in the restaurant the food there was pretty good as well. I had a lovely oven baked haddock. It's fish you find everywhere here, it is the fall back option for fish and chips, so it's a good firm, flaky fish that is easy to fillet. But today was walking in the wet day. The wind blew, the heavens opened and it was wild. I walked to a local landmark know as 'the ... read more

After two days of camping in Inverness, I packed my slightly damp tent and the bike panniers, wished Heading North Nigel well on his similar, but reverse trip, and got on the road. But not before stopping at McD's for my breakfast meal deal and coffee. The sky was promising some moisture, so I put on my pannier covers and front bag shower cap (I forgot the cover at home, and a 3 pack of shower caps from the £ Shop fit the bill just right, and with two spares.) I started with an immediate climb out of Inverness (I should know by now, most towns are by rivers, and most towns will require climbing out of). After about two hours, as it had started to rain, and as the wind was wearing on me, I ... read more

Stopped at 'Cairns' today. Don't you love 'em. Usually as I walk I'm happy enough to see a cairn as it indicates I'm going the correct way. They are comfortiNg and reassuring and at times even vital. I have been fogged in to the extent I've had to take compass bearings and literally go from cairn to cairn on bearings as visability has been so poor. But today I just love 'em because they are so cute! Not marked on any map and not mentioned in any guide book or tourist brochure but simply there on the side of the road and there in their hundreds. Little cuties. Several cars had stopped and everyone was equally intrigued and equally surprised. Not so cute are the 'Well of the seven heads' shots. The second one although pretty ... read more

As I decided not to overdo the daily riding, I took my interim rest stop and tacky tourist tour day today. There's plenty of riding to come, and I'm also hoping to avoid saddle sores. My lack of belief in such things, during my last excursion, proved false, embarassing, and somewhat painful. Campground showers come in all forms and qualities, and this campground proved no less so. The showers are best described as early period prison block. Long and narrow, elbows and back touched walls and curtains on every movement. The shower itself, and a little beyond, was painted dark, dark depressing blue, with little illumination from lighting. No such concept as scald control on vintage showers either. Possibly all attempt to discourage excess water use. In an attempt to control spending and limit the tradional ... read more

Ah, Ben Nevis! The magic of conquering the highest peak in the UK has lasted one day! Now that feeling has been utterly eliminated! I was happy taking just over 7 hours for the up and down, some runner did it in 70 minutes today! It was the annual Ben Nevis race and this guy has won the events for 8 consecutive years. We picked up a hitch hiker today who had competed in the event and he had the time of just over 90 minutes so my day's hike was sounding very, very average. He did look a bit stiff and weary and he was thankful for the lift but he had just run up and down Ben Nevis! It's compulsory to take gloves, a hat and a coat (last year the temp at the ... read more

Woke relatively early, packed up the tent, and headed off to find breakfast, ...or a convienience store (proved to be a challenge on a prior trip, in some towns/villages). I tried the hotel I had eaten at yesterday, and while they served anyone supper, they only provide breakfast for guests (??). I was directed down the street and had a quick bite at a cafe that had just opened. Next, ...visit the Co-op for on route supplies, as the opportunities on route may prove limited. All in all, a good day of cycling along the coast and then inland for a while before popping back to the inlet at Inverness. I followed the A9 for about half the route (quite busy, and somewhat worrisome where the highway splits at Tain). After which, it was (thankfully) local ... read more
