As John Keats once surmised whilst overlooking the rugged Scottish terrain- shrouded in mist- on top of the British Isles' highest peak; "Read me a lesson, Muse, and speak it loud / upon the top of Nevis, blind in mist!". Luckily I had the good fortune that day to see Ben Nevis from a distance down below, and captured a spectacularly clear picture of the iconic snow-capped mountain, a feature in much of the Scottish lore of a romantic time gone by. As this image was taken during the winter season, I have not yet set out to climb the 1,345 metres of mountain. However, as I've only just moved to Edinburgh and am currently in the process of organising all of the adventures I'm planning to undertake in the coming months, Ben Nevis is certainly ... read more

On Sat 2 Jun, we headed south to Dingwall then west to Skye based on Sandra’s advice. She said the scenery would be beautiful and she wasn’t wrong. We stopped briefly at Dingwall to consult our big map and some locals passing by confirmed Sandra’s advice. We drove along the A890 beside Loch Carron to Auchtertyre. We backtracked along the A87 to visit the iconic Eilean Donan Castle. It didn’t disappoint. After a tour, many photos and a late lunch, we set off again passing through the Kyle of Localsh and on to Portree (Port Righ). We found the Givendale Guest House easily. Phew!! Jurriaan, our host, very personable and hospitable. Fountain of knowledge but not intrusive. He rents five rooms that are fully booked from May to September. And he plays U2 every morning at ... read more

We checked in to the Broomlea B&B on the Mains Balnagowan Ardersier just after 7pm Sun 27 May. The proprietors, Theresa and Alistair, are lovely. The children had left home so they decided to turn their home into a B&B. It is very comfortable. Out in the country. Farmhouses all around. Ardersier is a tiny village close by on the shores of the Moray Firth. Nairn a little further east is slightly bigger. Thirteen miles to the west is Inverness, cultural capital to the Highlands. Very busy city with lots of traffic. Mon 28 May, we visited the Battlefield at Culloden. Very, very moving. The re-enactment of the battle in the cinema was way too realistic. The English were ruthless. The guide was a young French girl. Very knowledgeable. Very respectful but managed to lighten the ... read more

We spent our first night at my first AirBnb, a charming 1820’s cottage in the town of Colinton just outside of Edinburgh, the boyhood home of Robert Louis Stevenson. The cottage is the home of a retired teacher named Pam who we immediately adored and put us immediately at ease about the trepidation about staying in a stranger’s home. She chatted with her as she cooked us a delicious breakfast before we headed off to nearby Midhope Castle (Lallybroch to the Outlander fans). Mom is a Outlander book fanatic and I have enjoyed watching the TV series so I have incorporated several Outlander sites along the way on our trip. After Lallybroch we went north to Culross, another Outlander site but quite simply a picture perfect coastal village. Culross has been used in film before because ... read more

Still suffering from a bit of jet lag. Woke up at 2:30 and tried to get back to sleep, successfully till 5:30. Packed up my things. I've been leaving my suitcase in the car. All the hotels over here have stairs and no elevators and I'm tired of dragging a suitcase up the stairs so I just take the 'necessaries'. Had a delicious breakfast at the Cedar Villa and headed SW toward a place called Cannich where there is another chambered cairn that I wanted to see. I had plenty of time today so I just took my time. As I was driving out of Inverness the oncoming traffic was all covered in snow. There was very little in Inverness and so as a car drove out of a side road with about 10cm of snow ... read more

Today was such a mixed weather bag. Beautiful sunshine in the morning to mini hail in the afternoon. There was heaps of snow and some rain. I left Perth at around 9 after scraping the ice off the car. I had brekky at Maccas as the cook didn't show up at the Hotel...lol. The toffee latte was yummy Grady!!! I went to a store and bought a double plug for my GPS and dash cam so they could operate together and headed north. The day was a balmy 2 degrees when I left Perth. Lucky I have a warm little car. First stop was the Tomnaverie Stone Circle. It was about a 40 minute drive from Perth through some very pretty countryside, When I finally found the carpark I had to walk about 10 minutes up ... read more

At the beginning of this Blog I must apologize to all the people who have sent me messages over the years in response to my blog. Today, October 13, 2017 is the first time I have ever clicked on this page... and such lovely messages and such interesting people have I found. I feel so bad that wonderful messages from 2010 and earlier have gone unanswered. I will try to read them all ...all 90 ... and respond if appropriate. Thank you to every one who took the time to write me. Mia Culpa Mia Culpa Mia Culpa. Promise to be more vigilant and forthcoming with responses. :-) October 13 was a day of travel and discovery ....as you have read above! The day began at 05.30 in darkness and thankfully no rain. Fort William ...three sleeps... have seen at least five men in kilts...but they were all walking tooo fast to catch them digitally! Two reservations on the National Rail and two seats taken by others. The first taker was a young arrogant looking sort sitting with an equally belligerent looking young thing as girlfriend... left them to it but sent evil looks in his direction every time I looked at him and he looked at me … just in case he thought he had gotten one over on an old lady. The second train ride I was faced with two men in my space... but after a promise of a cup of tea I sat in the four seat combination and spent the rest of the train ride to Fort William talking to two Norsemen. One worked ... read more

O'er the sea at Skye! It's taken a while but we managed to get a sailing day. Can it be called sailing when it's a ferry? Pretty good day here on Skye, which equates to pretty ugly day anywhere else but the boats at least set out from Elgol (how Viking is that) and headed around Skyle behind the Cuillins (a scraggy range of hills/mountains/munros) that are lovely and scenic and imposing and challenging and scary to a docking quite close to Loch Coruisk. The Loch is really only accessible via the ferry (or an arduous climb/hike over the Cuillins) and is a bit of a walkers paradise. We didn't have time (or energy!) to go around the Loch and were content with a picnic by the shore, which despite the omnipresent threat of rain, we ... read more

Ben Macdui, the UK's second highest peak. If you want to know what it's like at the top, STOP READING. It wasn't the fact that the temperature when I started was 4 degrees, it wasn't that the wind was howling and dropping the temperature even more, it wasn't that rain would sweep in and out at regular intervals, it wasn't that cloud obstructed my views for most of the walk, it wasn't that the track rose 900 m (with the expected drop in temperature of a degree for every 100m), it wasn't that the track was nothing but rocks for about 2 km, it wasn't even the difficulty discerning the path. BUT when it started snowing/sleeting the combination of all the factories saw me turn and retreat. The cloud and mist was so thick that I ... read more
