Edit Blog Post
At the beginning of this Blog I must apologize to all the people who have sent me messages over the years in response to my blog. Today, October 13, 2017 is the first time I have ever clicked on this page... and such lovely messages and such interesting people have I found. I feel so bad that wonderful messages from 2010 and earlier have gone unanswered. I will try to read them all ...all 90 ... and respond if appropriate. Thank you to every one who took the time to write me. Mia Culpa Mia Culpa Mia Culpa. Promise to be more vigilant and forthcoming with responses. :-)
October 13 was a day of travel and discovery ....as you have read above!
The day began at 05.30 in darkness and thankfully no rain. I did carry the hotel umbrella during the walk to the Ferry Terminal in Stornaway. Once at the Terminal I handed it in and the woman at the ticket counter said she would take care of the situation. It was required to be at the terminal by 06.30. On line the yellow flag of warning was raised concerning the crossing. It was just a bit rough bringing
back memories of a childhood crossing of the Atlantic in December...OMG... that was one huge throw up of a trip! Thankfully this trip I ate and kept my breakfast of black pudding and yellow fried egg. The machine capuccino is not worth mentioning.
Sitting near the window in the Mariner's Lounge I knit my socks and watched the horizon.
Promptly at 09.30 the ferry docked and walking down the gangplank the bus door was seen standing open waiting for passengers. There were quite a few of those because today is the first day of the October Half Term Holiday.
By eleven the Citylink bus had driven thru downtown Ullapool and arrived in Inverness. Four lanes of the usual thin road led in and out of Inverness proper. There was even bumper to bumper traffic.
With two and a half hours in Inverness the big pck was put into a locker and the wander began. It was a good place to search for a brooch that spoke to me and would look good on my Harris Tweed scarf. Found a pewter kilt pin with a monarch of the glen (an elk?) at the top for my Harris Tweed.
Later in the Victorian Market...the entrance of which I failed to photograph ... in a quasi antique jewelery shop I found the piece de la resistance ... exactly perfect... absolutely just right...it spoke to me loud and clear and I had to tell it to quiet down. It cost 350 pounds...$579.69 BooHooHoo...and became recorded digitally.
Lunch at the Exchange Pub on the suggestion of a ScotRail information person consisted of a cheese sandwich, mushroom soup, onion chutney and a half pint.
A Unicorn stands erect high on a stone column in the square in front of the Mark&Spencer store.
The train for Thurso left at 14.00. After two lists of stops on the large info sheet in the station the train arrived in Thiurso at almost 18.00.
Many small ytowns, lovely old train stations, fields of rye growing for the manufacture of the drink, rolling hills supporting sheep and a few brown cows flashed by the window. I knit my socks, caught forty winks and was thirsty because the water bottle had not been filled.
That Vodafone wants topup again so I could not make a second call to the B&B. Stopped in at the
Busy Inverness Station
... many people travelling because of school half term holiday Stanley Hotel and a map was kindly printed and I was on my way ...uphill...to Thurso House.
Once in the room all clothes were removed shower was taken and bed was entered. What a day!
...and for dinner? cup of instant coffee, stilton cheese on a bun and a small bisquit. Looking forward to Breakfast.
There was no way I was going anywhere once I took off the boots. They are the best but having them on my feet since 05.45 ... was enough!!
..and have you heard about the non effectiveness of antibiotics ...become informed....700,000 people die per year because the antibiotics did not work for them .... https://www.theguardian.com/society/2010/aug/12/the-end-of-antibiotics-health-infections
