Today mark ten months away from home and also, one more week before we return to Toronto. Benjamin and Joshua are delighted to be counting down with single digits. We slept in a bit later this morning, and having a coffee maker at this hostel was a nice bonus (we rarely find one) so we could actually have real coffee rather than the instant stuff. After breakfast, I got talking with a Taiwanese women who was looking at her map, planning her day. I told her of our plans to visit the castle and later, seeing us set to go in our car, she asked if she could join us. With no luggage in the car, there was lots of room so Amy joined us for the day. Amy has been traveling for several weeks and ... read more

I went out early this morning, to a field near the castle, and cut some wild flower's for Evy's birthday. When I returned, we all had breakfast in the dining hall, under the family portraits again. After packing up, we said goodbye to the castle and headed off down the road - a very narrow one lane road. Though most of the roads here in Scotland our paved, they have this odd habit of making one lane roads with passing spots every now and then. Because they are paved, people drive quite fast on them. The trouble comes when you reach another car. Inevitably you have to back up or risk scratching the car by pulling off as far as you can towards the bushes that line the roadway. I am sure these roads have many ... read more

Today was travel day again... as is tomorrow... but we managed to find some pretty cool things along the way. We left Stornoway this morning and traveled to Tarbert to catch the ferry to the Isle of Skye. Since we had time to kill we thought we'd check out a bit of south Harris. We first found the Golden road. So named, not because of its beauty, but by the stupid amount it cost to build it. It stretches along the east east coast of south Harris through the various little villages. We found it just to check out a Harris tweed shop that was ok but nothing spectacular. The road is one car wide just like many other roads we've encountered, only this one undulated a lot so we you never really knew if someone ... read more

Right....well....here's the first post for all you Kilt Rock Sound System Fans out there.... As we type we're in the final stages of pre-tour preparation. Just arrived back to Glasgow via another classic bus journey courtesy of the disasterous citylink, we're hoping for better public transport on the continent! Our previous week was spent up on Skye rehearsing, or so we thought.....Yeah well we had all the good intentions of learning tunes, making up sets and getting to know each other... ...We started off well on Tuesday by making up three sets to hit the Parisien stadium crowds with. The problem was we were blessed with the hottest weather on Skye's records turning the rest of the day into a BBQ, football and al fresco swim sesh (when our chauffeur, Cara arrived). The next few days ... read more

We slept in *a little* this morning. Jer had to dress and move our car, which was in a no parking zone effective starting at 8am. We showered and dressed and went downstairs for our first Scottish breakfasts. Jer went traditional all the way: blood pudding, sausages, beans, fried egg (sunny side up), broiled tomato, toast and two rashers of bacon. I opted for the vegetarian version, which had veggie sausage and potato cakes instead of bacon. We checked out of our hotel, loaded up the car and wandered a little around Portree. The town is quaint and we were glad to have happened upon it the night before. Since we’d gone all the way to the Isle of Skye, we decided to visit a castle further up north: Dunvegan, which was the home of ... read more

I am behind again....so I am going to tell you about my Isle of Skye trip that I took last weekend. I feel like life has picked up now more than ever. Now instead of having nothing to do, I have plenty to do. Go figure. I can’t seem to stop moving these days…I got back from my 3 week holiday about two weeks ago, and this past weekend I decided that I needed more traveling in my life and did an Isle of Skye tour with a good friend. We actually booked this tour in February, so we both knew it was coming, but neither of us still had fully recovered from holiday. We booked this tour through MacBackpackers. Alex had heard of them from a friend who had previously done it and recommended it. ... read more

Finally, an ambition fulfilled to go on a road trip in my own back garden - the serene and enchanting Scottish Highlands. A stunning journey through Perthshire to Kinloch Rannoch for two nights. Onwards to the McQueen ancestral home of the beautiful Isle of Skye for 2 nights. Further north for a bit of horse riding and speedboat action in Gareloch (via Applecross) and then a night at Ballachuilish in the shadows of Glen Coe. What a time : )... read more
