On Monday, we drive over the concrete bridge to Skye, the Misty Isle, in a strong wind. The sky shows patches of blue ahead, but when we reach Broadford, there's a downpour. We decide on some indoor activity, so head for the Talisker distillery. It's the time of the Tattie Bogle festival. Along the road there are countless scarecrows: a man bending to pull logs from a pile, a woman in spotted wellies and Marigolds sitting at a bus stop, the Stig from Top Gear in white overalls and racing helmet, a dalek. Others are more sinister, with devilish masks and sharp teeth. On the tour, we find that the distillery isn't in production today. Talisker depends on rain to feed the burn for its water supply, and to our surprise there hasn't been enough of ... read more

Our last day and the weather feels the same way we do.... overcast, misty, foggy, rain.... Now this is what we expected from Scotland!!! Earlier we mentioned the roadkill of pheasants, well Elke spotted a whole flock on the side of the road... Driving on narrow roads exciting - add rain and fog... priceless. Made our way back to Edinburgh for the last night and Elke couldn't stand it any longer so we went to an Italian restaurant. This just didn't sit well so after dinner we stopped at a pub for beer (mmmm), scotch (double yum) and STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING (yahoo!) Next morning we got lost 2 or 3 times trying to get to the airport ( damned roundabouts) but were sucessful with not adding any gas and arrived on fumes. I will add ... read more

Our journey today takes us around the loop of north Isle of Skye. A few things impact us as we drive around. First lots of sheep, everwhere. Second, clear cutting forestry. Makes for easier tree removal but for horrible scenery. It does however allow for a clearer view of the mountains. Made a quick visit to THE jewellry shop on the island which is the home of Skye Silver. Purchases were made.... nuff said. For a change the skies were clear. Whether these creatures were always there and just hidden in the shrouds of mist or the Tourism deperatment of Scotland brought them out for the tourists doesn't matter, i tried to stop and see all of them. We started to play a game I called springing sheep. The roads are narrow enough that you can ... read more

First i must apologise that we have not kept up to date with our travelblog installment.. due to circumstances beyond our control - mainly... no internet service in the north of the Isle of Skye... go figure... Left the Glengarry Hotel and drove to Isle of Skye, stopping at Eilean Donan Castle for pictures and a visit to the gift shoppe. Crossed over the causeway bridge on to Skye. Our adventure takes us to Elgol where I was trying to take a Kodiak ride to see wildlife. Bad news… due to the weather the tour has been cancelled. Good news… we found a tea shop run by an aging hippie. He was really happy that we ordered a machiatto (he could disply his skills with the espresso machine) and had some cheese and garlic scones. These ... read more

On October 10 we realized that we both had the next 2 days off. So, it was time to do something about it; get out of Inverness and explore Scotland. After all, that's what we're here for. Ashley had been to the Isle of Skye on her previous visit and decided it was a must-see for Dan. The next day we rented a car and headed for Skye. After a couple hours it occurred to us that we were pretty hungry and needed lunch, pronto. We pulled off the road into a restaurant parking lot only to find the restaurant was closed indefinitely. There were signs pointing to other small towns off the main road where we thought there may be a local watering hole with some grub. Unfortunately for us we missed the turnoff for ... read more

We´re drawn back again to the West coast of Scotland. The large Isle of Skye, famous for Flora MacDonald and Bonnie Prince Charlie, sits just off the coast, now accessed by bridge. On our way there we drive by more lochs and castles, then its over the bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh and up through the dramatic Cuillin Hills and past the brooding Dunvegan Castle. Tessa and Keith are both wet after an unexpected downpour a few hours ago and the cool wind is chilling. We find a sheltered spot and in moment of sunshine Keith leaps out to whip up a hot snack. Its perfectly timed, as just as he leaps back in, down comes the rain which quickly turns to hail. Camping tonight? Hmmm. Tessa´s not too keen. In between the showers we´re treated ... read more

The road to Applecross

On my way to the Loch ness’ must say I was a little excited; that was until I got there. Because the roads don’t have any shoulders there really isn’t anywhere to pull over for you can have look see. I came across an information building/gift shop along Loch ness also there stood Urquhart Castle a look out and a pier. This area was fenced off and well treed so you couldn’t really see at all, what a disappointment. To truly have a good look at loch ness you had to pay for it 7pound 50. Which is fifteen dollars, so at this point I got a little annoyed everywhere I have been too you have to pay, pay, pay. Not only are you paying an entrance fee but also parking which is usually 3 pound ... read more
