Hi All Well, I'm on the last leg of this great adventure and trying to squeeze in the last few things I want to do before I have to step on the plane back to the cold and wet UK :-( I will try to bring a little sunshine back with me in time for the Easter weekend. My time in Perth has been made so much easier by a new friend I have made here. Gail emigrated here about three years ago and is the daughter of my parents' neighbours' friends! We had never met before but when I emailed to say I would be visiting Perth she immediately offered me a place to stay. I accepted gratefully. We are about the same age and hit it off straight away and it has been lovely ... read more

The trick is not to over plan the trip. All you need is a reasonable level of fitness, a touring bike, a rough idea of the route you want to follow and a love of life. I finished a contract on October 31st, decided a break would do me good, cleared it with the wife and kids and flew out on November 12th. So no drama but here’s the prep I did. I looked at the typical weather and Australia in Nov / Dec is going from Spring to Summer. I was aware that South Australia gets very cold in winter and was happy that it may get hot. Having said that some days shade temperatures reached the high 30s to low 40s celsius. That means road temperatures were higher, although the ... read more

Cycle from Sydney to Perth! What all the way across? Are you sure! That’s an awful long way. Why would you want to? What about the deadly snakes and killer spiders? I’ve heard the road trains don’t stop for anything! Drivers are all doing speed. Where will you get enough water in that heat? It’s 4,360 kms and it’s a blast. You get to cycle good quality sealed roads, dirt tracks, mountain passes. You track the third longest navigable river in the world, past wheat plains and vineyards. Cruise across treeless desert and check out hard core mining towns. Throw in a 146km straight road that disappears to the horizon in both directions, with you a tiny dot on an endless 360 degree landscape and picture yourself smiling and listening to the wind whistle across the ... read more

Looking back I can see a misspent youth playing sports and later spending all my disposable income traveling around Europe, Asia, Australasia. Marriage meant a 2 year honeymoon through India, Nepal, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand and Borneo. A period of nesting and raising a brood gave the opportunity to enjoy a couple of years in Sydney and later to take them all on a four month trip through Thailand, Australia and Borneo. Then it was knuckle down time to put the kids through school softened by fantastic French camping and knocking out a few Ironman trialthlon events. UK events (for charity) gave way to overseas events in Switzerland, Australia and Canada (for fun). Then as the kids have started penning their own agendas the travel bug has returned with trips to Nepal, Cambodia and Australia, and ... read more

I was hoping for a weekend of bright blue skies and sunshine, but we got snow on our winter beach weekend in Selsey. Which was just as lovely! Mum and Dad who are over visiting for January and took the family away for a long weekend. As the weekend approached it became clear it really was going to be a wintery weekend with snow storms hitting right across Europe. Rather lucky we hadn't booked anything that needed a plane ride and that we weren't going north as we would not have left London. In the end our trains were only delayed around 90mins on the way down and back so not too bad considering. The beach house we stayed at was perfect, 4 rooms, 3 bathrooms and a large dinning/living space. It was called Lands End ... read more

Today I'm in pain again. I should be at work right now but instead I'm in my new "home" next to the lake. In the woods, in my little room, waiting for the pain to be gone. Waiting to get energy to be able to do things properley. Yesterday I was walking at the side of the River Thames. Perfect light came from the sky, and a perfect bold tree was streching up on my way.. posing. Lovely Autumn! Enjoy the coloures and the sounds of the leaves!!:)... read more

Well the last 6 months have flown by. Our first foray into alternative work, that being campsite couriers. We both agree that it has been a great way to work; busy at times but doesn't bare any comparison with the demands experienced in our previous careers in education. A hard day simply meant that customers had left accommodation, usually caravans, in a dirty state, which meant we had to spend more time cleaning. October / November falls between summer and winter contracts so will be our family / travelling time. Next Monday we fly to Kuala Lumpur. With the aid of modern technology we have been able to put together a 3 week, multi location trip. So in to Kuala Lumpur, then .. Singapore, Perhentian Islands, Taman Negara, Cameron Highlands, Penang. Much excitement.... read more
