The facilities at The Chilworth Manor were amazing. "The Club" had steam room, sauna, spa and indoor pool. Jeff and I made good use of it all to soothe our tiring muscles. We were cycling out of Chilworth by 8:30am, the route to Chichester today took us very close in to Southampton. We were in suburbia for all but a handful of kilometers. The roads were mostly very busy, thankfully we had cycle paths/lanes for a good deal of the day. We travelled 63kms and have effectively just moved the requisite distance towards Dover. Today was more about the destination than the journey. The ride was made that bit easier by the westerly we had at our backs for most of the day. We stopped for a rare photo opportunity at Portsmouth where the cycle path ... read more

Our next stop on our tour around the UK was Chichester. We hadn’t heard of it before, but we found that a cat and home needed our help through Trusted Housesitters so why not? We have been very fortunate on our travels to find great homes to stay in, people to meet (either in person or through video chats) and lovely cats to enjoy. This stop was no different. Due to timing, we didn’t get to meet Emma in person, but it worked out fine anyway as received enough information from her to know where to find the key, all the necessary items for the cat and the house and all was good. Here Elton was allowed outside, but there wasn’t a cat door so we just had to make sure he was inside before we ... read more

We took the train to Amberley and were told there would be a cab waiting for us. Well, there wasn’t. We called the castle and email but to no avail. Finally, we just called a cab and a bit later a women drove up to pick us up for the 5-minute drive to the castle. We could have walked but, it was dark with no street lights and no apparent sidewalk. It was only on the way back to the station that we saw the sidewalk behind hedges. We got to the castle and checked in. Once we arrived everyone was attentive so we were not sure where the miscommunication lay. Our room was not the high end but wonderful nevertheless. It had old exterior walls with the old window styles. Wind blew into areas but ... read more

Still glorious weather today but forecast warned that it would come to an abrupt end this evening (and it did). Making the most of the lovely sunshine we set off first to the stately home only a couple of miles from the campsite .. Stansted Park. First thing we spotted was that the house was not open until 1pm and it was a good 2 hours short of that. Second was that this is really a rather commercial enterprise with garden centre, farm shop and the first gardens we came to, taken over by a very busy restaurant, tea room. We had a walk round the gardens we could access but decided not to wait for the 1pm opening and instead got on my phone to prebook us entry to somewhere else. An excellent decision as ... read more

We were going to visit Wakehurst Place at the end of March, but postponed owing to the national lockdown. Mark took days off on 15th and 16th September; we decided to visit there on 16 September. He checked the bus timetable between Haywards Health and Wakehurst Place and booked a slot for us to enter there at 12.30. Following one-way system, we entered from the temporary entrance upon our arrival and found the picnic table to have lunch. After that, we headed for the water gardens via Black Pond and Iris Dell, and walked down to Westwood Lake via Himalyan Glade. Colourful aquatic flowers were blossoming and showed picturesque scenes with winding rivers and stone bridges. Many trees and shrubs retained green leaves. Upon the arrival of Westwood Lake, we followed the footpath and the broadwalks ... read more

Dear All Greetings from London! Since I wrote my last entry on my explorations of the Peak District whilst spending the first two weeks of my holidays in Sheffield, I have returned to London and have enjoyed the subsequent three weeks of my holidays here, hosting my wonderful family for visits. This has been a wonderful time, and having been able to spend time with them has certainly been one of the positives that has come out of this tricky situation. I also managed to fit in a day trip myself from London to a nearby point of interest, which I enjoyed very much, and which I will write about here. But first, just a bit of background on where some of my summer travel planning this year began. When we first went into lockdown back ... read more

Welcome to 2020, happy New Year and back out into the wild for us! This time it’s a journey out in the Bongo into the South Downs and to Wakehurst, the sister gardens of Kew Gardens in London which we went to last year and really enjoyed, well recommended if you’ve not been. What and where is Wakehurst Place..? It’s in West Sussex and is a nice drive from Shoreham by Sea, about 30 minutes through lots of small villages such as Ditchling which has a great pub/restaurant called the Bull, well worth a visit with great food and an open fire. Just past the Bluebell railway, we arrive at Wakehurst Place and get parked up and into our walking boots, apparently, it’s dirt tracks and woodland marshes… On getting our tickets, we are told that ... read more

It's not quite the New Year (2020), but, it's a day out and start on getting fit and healthy again after the Christmas binging with my family who were down in Brighton with my brother, not to mention all the food at home with Helen... It’s Bongo'ing off we go to Petworth Park, it’s a short drive through the South Downs to get these wobbly bodies moving and test out the all-terrain tyres I added to the Bongo in December, thanks Dad! So, what is Petworth House I hear you ask..? It’s one of many Sussex’s fancy stately etates that can be visited, this on is a late 17th-century Grade I listed country house, rebuilt in 1688 by Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset and the owner of a huge estate, no idea what Charles did ... read more

Another lazy start and a great basic breakfast supplied by the hotel. Today is a bank holiday here in UK, so everywhere is still very busy. Shops today are Tesco and Sainsbury. Between the two of them we manage to clear all the remaining items from our list. Today, we had lunch at the Toby Carvery in Crawley. As it was a Bank Holiday we got there early so that we would not have to wait for a table. The food as always was really great. Again, we did not need another meal tonight so finished of the picnic items from yesterday we have in the room.... read more

Nice breakfast offerings at the hotel was egg or bacon baps and some cakes plus hot drinks. More than enough to get us started in the morning. As today is Sunday, most of the shops do not open until 10.30am, so it was a nice opportunity to have a lay in. George´s eye is still hurting from when a fly flew into it in Singapore, so first stop today is Boots to get something for it. It turns out he has a small infection in his eye, so the pharmacist gave him some antibiotic drops and no prescription required. Next stop B&M stores. This is a new shop for us, but we hear they are good value. We were not to be disappointed. There was enough savings here to pay for suitcase one of two. Next ... read more
